Unions to protest demanding sand, laterite stone policy on Aug 18

Mangaluru: A massive rally of workers in the construction sector and other labour organisations affiliated with CITU and AITUC will be held from Ambedkar Circle in the city and proceed to stage a protest in front of the Mini Vidhana Soudha on Aug 18. Vasanth Achari, general secretary, Construction Workers Federation, Dakshina Kannada, said the rally and protest will be held to demand the govt to ensure the supply of sand and laterite stones in Dakshina Kannada. He told reporters on Thursday, that for the past three months, construction activities in Dakshina Kannada nearly came to a halt. The authorities' actions to curb illegal laterite stone and sand extraction resulted in a shortage of raw materials for this sector. The Karnataka state govt failed to organise legal sand mining and laterite stone quarrying. Due to the current issue, the construction sector is at a standstill as red stone and sand are unavailable in the district, he said. "Various types of workers in this field are left without jobs and are struggling to make ends meet. Ordinary people are facing difficulties as their plans to build homes have been put on hold," Achari said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 3BHK Transformation Possible for ₹4.5 Lakh? The question of the livelihood of construction workers, who are already on the streets, should also be a priority," said Achari. "A coastal sand policy should be formulated to ensure smooth and straightforward sand supply in the coastal districts. Opportunities should be provided for environmentally friendly sand mining and regulated laterite stone quarrying. Construction workers who are facing difficulties without jobs should be provided financial relief of Rs 10,000 per month," he added. Construction workers to hold protest march tomorrow

Mangaluru: Karnataka State Construction Workers Federation Dakshina Kannada district president, Vasantha Achari, said that the forum will hold a protest march in the city on Monday, demanding an uninterrupted supply of sand and laterite stones in the district. Achari told reporters here on Saturday, that over 1.2 lakh construction workers registered through the labour department and an equal number of unregistered labourers in the district are jobless due to the sand and laterite stone shortage crisis. "Due to the current shortage of laterite stone and sand, construction and building activities came to a halt permanently in some places and partially in others. Workers in the construction industry have been without work for over a month, making it difficult for them and their families to sustain their livelihoods. People put their plans to build homes on hold, causing distress. The lack of raw materials indirectly affected truck workers, shopowners, labourers, traders and financial institutions on a large scale," Achari said, demanding a govt policy to make sand and laterite stones available for construction. He said the Sand Bazaar app of the mines and geology department is not functioning properly. Meanwhile, sand from other places is expensive, costing around Rs 22,000 per load. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Providers are furious: Internet access without a subscription! The No. 1 Thing You Can Do To Keep Your Brain Healthy, According To A Neurologist

The brain is the most complex organ in the body. It regulates everything from body temperature to memories to breathing and generates thousands of thoughts every day. So, how do we keep our gray-and-white matter in top form? That's what we — Raj Punjabi and Noah Michelson, the co-hosts of HuffPost's 'Am I Doing It Wrong?' podcast — asked Dr. Madhureeta Achari, a neurologist in independent practice for 30 years, when she recently dropped by our studio. Listen to the full episode by pressing play: Achari said the 'No. 1 reason' for many of the problems she sees in patients is that they are 'nutritionally deficient.' The United States is suffering from 'high-calorie malnutrition,' she noted, which means individuals are eating a lot of food but aren't getting the vitamins and minerals they require from it. 'The brain has to have a balanced diet,' she said. 'In terms of vitamins ... each of them does something. It's like a finely tuned machine. So you can't just fix one part, right? It's like a car. If everything's great, but one tire is flat, the car is still not going to go.' Achari advised that if trying to get everything we need to keep our brains in superb shape feels 'overwhelming,' we should concentrate on 'eating the rainbow.' '[We should be eating] lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, whole grains — I think 90% of us, or something, consume most of our grains in an ultra-refined form. We need to go back to whole grains, whole foods, meats, fish, poultry that is whole ... and you want some dairy, and you want some nuts and seeds ... and you want to try to, throughout your day, get all of those things.' Achari tells her patients to avoid supplements that claim to enhance brain function and instead focus on nutrition. 'They don't help you,' she said, noting that the 'wellness industrial complex' has promoted the 'weird idea that somehow we are smarter than our bodies.' 'We are not smarter than our bodies,' she emphasized. 'Our ancestors lived a certain way, they ate a certain way, they did certain things, and that's the reason we exist today.' So, if you want to keep your brain as healthy as possible, 'feed your cells' a wide variety of foods full of micronutrients daily, Achari said, and chew your food well. 'Eating means chewing,' she told us. 'There's this new culture of smoothies where everything goes into the gut before your teeth have ever chewed it. Teeth are the first part of the digestive system.' Chewing activates enzymes in your mouth like amylase, which helps break down the food and '[wakes up] your microbiome to get ready to consume and absorb all the things that we need to absorb.' We also chatted about how alcohol and cannabis can affect our brains (and what Achari always does after treating herself to a martini), what kind of exercise she recommends, and much more.
