Palestine Action supporters organise terror ban protest on foreign website

A protest supporting Palestine Action, the campaign group proscribed in Britain as a terror organisation, is being organised on a US website. At least 500 demonstrators are planning to gather on August 9 in central London to hold signs saying: 'I oppose genocide, I support Palestine Action.' The Metropolitan Police has warned the protesters to 'expect to be arrested'. The demonstration has been organised by Defend Our Juries, which is leading a campaign to reverse Palestine Action's proscription, under which hundreds have already been arrested. It is using the United States-based website Action Network to tell would-be protesters to express support for the group in such large numbers that the police cannot arrest all of them. But Defend Our Juries has denied the use of a foreign website is a ploy to dodge the UK ban on Palestine Action. '500 is more than double the total number of people arrested under the Terrorism Act in 2024,' the organisers say in an 'action briefing document' published on the Action Network website. 'It would be practically and politically difficult for the state to respond to an action on this scale. Even assuming it had the physical capacity to arrest so many people on the same day, the political fallout from such an operation would be incalculable, causing irreparable damage to the reputation of the Government and the police.' Defend Our Juries said the protest was required because Palestine Action's proscription was 'a major assault on democracy and everyone's rights to freedom of expression'. It added: 'Our assessment is that an action on this scale could be enough for the ban to be lifted. 'Charging and prosecuting at least 500 more people, in addition to the 200 people already arrested, is likely to be beyond the capacity of the state, given the current situation in the criminal justice system.' Palestine Action took down its own website after it was proscribed earlier this month. Expressing support for the group is now a criminal offence punishable by up to 14 years in prison under the Terrorism Act 2000. But supporters have since turned out to to protest against the ban, and confronted police outside the Royal Courts of Justice early this month when the court was hearing an unsuccessful bid to block the ban. Action Network allows protest groups to 'organise for progressive causes' without having to set up their own online infrastructure. 'We encourage responsible activism, and do not support using the platform to take unlawful or other improper action,' its website reads. 'We do not control or endorse the conduct of users and make no representations of any kind about them.' Defend Our Juries organised protests across the United Kingdom over the weekend in which more than 100 people were arrested and some pro-Palestinian activists chanted 'f--- your Jewish state'. Demonstrations were held in Manchester, Edinburgh, Bristol, Truro, and London. We have detailed plan, says Met A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: 'While we would not go into the details of our approach, the public can be reassured that we will have a detailed plan in place to respond to any eventuality. 'Our officers will continue to apply the law in relation to Palestine Action as we have done over the past three weekends. 'Anyone showing support for the group can expect to be arrested.' A spokesman for Defend Our Juries said: 'If the Home Secretary and the Met Commissioner think it's a good use of public resources to arrest, detain and interview more than 500 people for quietly expressing an opinion about the genocide in Gaza, that's on them. 'We have been asked if our use of Action Network is a devious attempt to circumvent the proscription of Palestine Action, since the website is based in the US. 'The answer is 'No'. That never even occurred to us. If our aim was to put ourselves beyond the reach of UK law enforcement, we wouldn't have opted for the US. 'We have always used Action Network for our campaigns, as many other groups and movements do, for its user friendliness and functionality.'

Zarah Sultana launches fundraising drive for new leftwing party

Zarah Sultana has launched a fundraising drive and supporter sign-up page under her own name as she pushed on with plans for the formation of a new leftwing party. The Coventry South MP, who announced last Thursday that she would be co-leading the new party with Jeremy Corbyn, used the platform ActionNetwork to gather supporters. The landing page has so far recorded more than 64,000 'actions taken'. But the move has caused further unease within the emerging left alliance, with organisers fearing control over donations and data might become concentrated within Sultana's camp. After Sultana announced her co-leadership plan, Corbyn made a separate statement noting 'discussions were ongoing'. Concerns were fuelled by the fact that the movement lacked wider solid infrastructure, with some organisers fearing Sultana might retain ownership of the data and donations in the absence of them. The announcement being made without an agreement was described as 'childlike behaviour' by a small few involved in the organisation of the nascent party. But some concerns appear to have been allayed after a week of silence and off-stage manoeuvring – culminating in an apparent agreement to fold all assets into the new party's collective structure. Those close to the talks now say the issue is resolved, with one insisting it was 'obvious' that was always going to be the case. But Corbyn's Peace and Justice Project, which has more than 50,000 subscribers, will remain a separate entity and is not expected to support the broader movement. One ally said the backlash to Sultana's launch had been overblown and noted the scale of support she had already generated. The incremental move towards the formation of a new leftwing challenger party came after a tense week of briefings and leaked messages, which appeared to show a lack of common ground between the two camps. The communications gap has been compounded by the fact that Sultana and Corbyn are abroad with Corbyn in Colombia for Progressive International events, and Sultana in Bosnia for the 30th anniversary of the Srebrenica massacre. While Sultana's decision to push ahead with setting up fundraising infrastructure had triggered jitters, organisers believe if mailing lists and donation flows from her network and the Peace and Justice Project were combined, they could form the foundation of one of the largest left-aligned political infrastructures in Europe. There has already been several weeks of informal organising between broad Labour-left figures, independents, and grassroots groups who formed a part of an early memorandum of understanding. Supporters point to another broader context: more than 300,000 people are believed to have left the Labour party in recent years, many after Keir Starmer's withdrawal of the whip from Corbyn and the marginalisation of leftwing MPs. Several councillors and grassroots organisers involved in the new party effort have also been expelled or deselected under new party rules. The new party's process document is expected to be published in the coming days and potentially resolve tensions between multiple grassroots formations. One source involved described the next steps as an attempt to 'find a common position that can get the ship sailing again'. But the path ahead remains uncertain. 'There are a lot of moving parts, and a lot of egos,' one organiser said. 'The potential is enormous, but so is the risk of collapse. We've seen it before across the European left.'

A ticket to the July 15 All-Star Game in Atlanta's Truist Park will cost fans nearly $500 more than ... More a regular-season ducat elsewhere. (Photo by Kevin C. Cox/Getty Images) Fans attending the 2025 All-Star Game will spend some $500 more than they would for a regular game. So says Action Network, an online site that provides premium sports betting analysis, real-time odds, and other informational data and tools for its clients. The site, founded in 2017, made its determinations by examining the ballpark experience across all 30 major-league venues, including Atlanta's Truist Park, where the All-Star Game will be played July 15. It revealed the following: ★ All-Star Game attendees in Atlanta will find a two-night hotel stay costs $48 more – up 19 per cent – while game-day tickets jumped $431, an average of 459 per cent ★ Los Angeles is the most expensive destination, with accommodations costing an average of $341 for a two-night stay and game-day tickets $177 (second only to the $181 ticket price in Sacramento, temporary home of the in-limbo Athletics) ★ The most budget-friendly city is Cleveland, with tickets at $90 each and beer available for $4 In its survey, Action Network surveyed the prices of tickets, accommodations, food and drink, and parking. Not included was the cost of souvenirs, which varies from city to city and from fan group to fan group. Photogenic Petco Park, in downtown San Diego, has high prices for parking, beer, and nearby ... More accommodations, a new survey has found. (Photo by) Parking cost the most ($43) in San Diego, the study showed, with New York's CitiField ($40) a close second. The cost of a ballpark beer topped out at $8.50 in Dodger Stadium, while the average cost of an inexpensive meal for one was $30, a major-league high, in Miami. Ticketing and accommodations were a whole different story, however. The average cost of a two-night stay in an Airbnb was costliest in San Diego, where the $343.06 expense topped Los Angeles, a close second at $341.22. Baseball tickets ran the gamut from $181 in Sacramento to just $44 in Miami. On the other hand, Miami finished first in the average cost of an inexpensive meal with a $30 price-tag, according to the Action Network survey. Considering all factors, L.A. had the highest costs and Cleveland the lowest. The 95th All-Star Game will be Atlanta's third, with one in each of its three ballparks: Fulton County Stadium, Turner Field, and Truist Park. The Braves also hosted All-Star Games in their two other home parks: Braves Field in Boston and Milwaukee County Stadium in Wisconsin. Beyond exposing the All-Star price hikes, Action Network proposed solutions, including using public transport where available; finding cheaper ballpark seats; limiting purchase of ballpark food; and finding accommodations well in advance – especially if located near transit lines. Action Network used airbnb data filtered by location and time of year plus team websites and a site called Numbeo, which pinpointed food, drink, and local transportation alternatives. The site has been featured in such major news outlets as The New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, CNBC, ESPN, and Sports Business Journal.

Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest live results: Joey Chestnut makes epic return

The jaws are back. The ones that belong to Joey Chestnut, the masticating machine who returns to the Nathan's Hot Dog Eating contest in Coney Island, New York, on Friday, July 4 after a one-year ban. The Action Network, a betting company, on Tuesday announced new data that shows Chestnut has a 93% chance of winning the contest. But slightly unscientific data from USA TODAY Sports indicates Chestnut's chances of winning are closer to 99.9%. In the last 18 years, he has failed to win the Mustard Belt two times. Once was last year — the result of a ban over a contract dispute. In 2015, he lost to Matt Stonie, who ate 62 hot dogs and buns while Chestnut inexplicably ate only 60 hot dogs and buns. Since then, "Jaws" has been on a rampage. Chestnut has eaten at least 70 hot dogs in six of the eight contests since his loss to Stonie. That includes his record-breaking 76 hot dogs in 2021. Last year, Patrick Bertoletti won the contest by eating 58 hot dogs and buns. Chestnut topped that total in every Nathan's contest he's been in since 2010. USA TODAY Sports will provide the latest updates, highlights, results and more throughout the contest. Follow along. What time is the Hot Dog Eating Contest? 'I had people in the crowd saying go for 52, and obviously I'm always setting my goals high. But the hot dogs just weren't cooperating. For some reason the buns felt larger today.'' Sudo devoured eight hot dogs in the first minute, then consumed an average of less than three hot dogs per minute before the 10-minute contest was over. In the end, she had her 11th title in 11 contests. 'I guess I refuse to lose," she said. 'I refuse to give him. And even when I do stumble, I get right back up.''
