Malcolm-Jamal Warner's Cosby Show co-star Adam Sandler breaks silence on his tragic drowning death

Adam Sandler has paid an emotional tribute to tragic Malcolm-Jamal Warner following his death by drowning in Costa Rica aged 54. Sandler, 58, crossed paths with Warner on The Cosby Show, where he played Smitty between 1987-1988 - and the Hollywood star reflected on his memories with the Theodore Huxtable star in a candid chat with ET. He said: 'I can't believe it. Malcolm was so nice to me when I was on the show and we had such good times together. 'We would take walks together, all of us, pick up food, talk play basketball - got to parties together. 'He was so good to me as a person and his mom was amazing to us, and I'm just sending my love to the family. 'Malcolm was a true great person, a hilarious smart kid and he meant a lot to America.' Adam Sandler remembers his time working with Malcolm-Jamal Warner on 'The Cosby Show.' 💔 — Entertainment Tonight (@etnow) July 22, 2025 Warner drowned on a Costa Rican beach on Sunday without lifeguards present, and a second man involved in the same incident was left in a critical condition. Following Warner's shock death, lifeguards from Playa Grande — a beach community located on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica — released a statement saying they were not present due to lack of 'resources.' 'We deeply regret the passing of Malcolm-Jamal Warner at Playa Grande. He was swept away by a strong rip current and died by drowning,' the Caribbean Guard, Costa Rica's volunteer lifeguard association, shared via Facebook on Monday. 'It all happened very quickly, and although there were people on the beach who entered the water to rescue him, they did not arrive in time.' 'He was pulled from underwater without vital signs, and despite CPR maneuvers being performed on the beach, resuscitation was unsuccessful.' The Guard added that Playa Grande is one of their 'most challenging beaches,' noting the presence of signs in English and Spanish that warn of the 'danger of death due to drowning.' Though the Guard has patrolled there 'over the past few years,' they alleged that they were 'not present' at the time of Warner's death. 'Due to recent aquatic incidents in Playa Negra, we had redirected resources there and to Chiquita, another iconic beach known for its strong currents,' they shared in the statement. Following Warner's shock death at 54, lifeguards from Playa Grande released a statement saying they were not present due to lack of 'resources' They then made an appeal to Costa Rica's president, Rodrigo Chaves Robles, and the government. 'From Caribbean Guard, a volunteer lifeguard association, we make an urgent appeal to the President of the Nation, the national government, the Municipality of Talamanca, and the entire Caribbean community to continue joining forces to minimize this problem, which, sadly, is on the rise ACROSS THE ENTIRE COUNTRY.' 'We do everything within our reach. We have saved numerous lives in recent years, and if Caribbean Guard didn't exist, the number of drownings would be counted in dozens. We give everything we have to minimize the risks, but without help from the government, clear public policies, and strong support from local business owners, this will continue to happen.' According to the Red Cross, emergency personnel also treated a second person at the scene. An unidentified 35-year-old man was transported to a local clinic in critical condition, and his current status remains unknown. In response, three ambulances were sent to the scene, as per Us Weekly. Warner's body has been moved from Limón to the Forensic Medicine Unit in San Joaquín de Flores where an autopsy will be conducted. Costa Rica's Judicial Investigation Department told Us Weekly that their preliminary investigation indicated Warner 'appeared to have entered the sea and was apparently swept away by a current.' Emergency responders from the Red Cross treated two men at the scene. A 35-year-old man, who hasn't been identified, was taken to a local clinic in critical condition. Warner, however, received CPR but was pronounced dead at the scene. A spokesperson confirmed both men were 'involved in the same incident.' Warner had been in Costa Rica since July 13. The Costa Rican National Police reported that Warner's body was discovered near Cocles, a beach in the Limon province. He was reportedly caught by a strong current, and his official cause of death has been listed as asphyxia. While the exact circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear, experts note that some beaches in Costa Rica can pose serious risks depending on conditions. Though many areas are safe for swimming, others are known for powerful currents and rip tides that demand caution. Warner is survived by his wife and young daughter, born in 2017. Their identities have not been revealed. Warner was best known for his iconic role as Theodore Huxtable, the only son of Cliff Huxtable, on the beloved NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. He appeared in all eight seasons from 1984 to 1992, earning widespread acclaim and becoming a household name. At the time, Warner was just a teenager, but his performance earned widespread acclaim, including a nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series at the 1986 Primetime Emmy Awards. His character, Theo, was based on Bill Cosby's real-life son, Ennis Cosby, and was portrayed with depth and sensitivity. In the show, Theo is diagnosed with dyslexia after struggling academically during his freshman year at New York University—an arc that resonated with many viewers. Beyond The Cosby Show, Warner carved out a successful and diverse career in both comedy and drama. He starred as Malcolm McGee in the UPN sitcom Malcolm & Eddie (1996–2000) opposite Eddie Griffin, and later headlined BET's Reed Between the Lines from 2011 to 2015 as Dr. Alex Reed. His television credits also included recurring roles and guest appearances on shows like Sons of Anarchy, Jeremiah, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and Community. Warner also voiced the Producer character on the educational children's series The Magic School Bus.

Adam Sandler's major reinvention from cheeky chap to Hollywood's biggest earner

There is no denying that Adam Sandler has had one of the biggest reinventions in Hollywood, transforming his career from a few small roles into the undisputed king of comedy. The 58-year-old is undoubtedly one of busiest stars around, having made his screen debut in the 80s, and is still working tirelessly today. On Friday, he is set to bring a beloved character back to our screens once again in the Happy Gilmore 2 sequel, leading the star-studded cast alongside Julie Bowen, Christopher McDonald and Ben Stiller, with appearances from Travis Kelce and Bad Bunny. But how did the Brooklyn-born actor, who made us all laugh in Just Go With It, Big Daddy and Grown Ups, turn laughter into a multi-million-dollar deal with Netflix? Adam began his career in stand-up before making the transition over to the small screen, with his TV debut as Smitty in a handful of episodes on the Cosby show in 1987. From there, he landed a string of film roles in movies including Going Overboard and Coneheads, before becoming a regular on Saturday Night Live between 1990 – 1995. Over the last few years, he has juggled his regular comedies in with some more serious roles, including Uncut Gems, Hustle and Spaceman, and is set to star opposite Laura Dern and George Clooney in Jay Kelly very soon. In 2014, his Happy Madison company took a huge step and signed a massive deal with Netflix, worth $250million, to produce films for the streaming service, including The Ridiculous 6, The Do-Over and his Murder Mystery movies. He also headlined two Netflix stand-up specials, 100% Fresh and I Love You. The lucrative partnership with the streaming services has been extended twice so far and, according to the Telegraph, in 2020, Netflix bosses claimed that subscribers had spent more than two billion hours watching his films. This has all helped to cement his status as one of the biggest stars of our time. Forbes reports that he was the 9th highest paid actor for 2024 – after topping the annual list the previous year – and earned a whopping $26m. Considering he has two huge projects coming out this year and a reported net worth of around $440m, we predict more appearances in the Forbes list in his future… While Adam has remained booked and busy in the decades since his career began, he has also gone above and beyond to help out his peers in the industry, giving pals roles and cameos in whatever project he was working on. In fact, members of his circle have become his most regular co-stars, with Rob Schneider, Steve Buscemi and David Spade appearing in countless Adam Sandler creations alongside his wife, Jackie, and their daughters, Sadie and Sunny. Hollywood heavyweight Al Pacino previously shared that the Funny People superstar gave him a role in 2011's Jack and Jill at a point when he was struggling for money – due to a corrupt accountant and years of overspending. 'I was broke. I had $50 million, and then I had nothing,' he wrote in his 2024 memoir, Sonny Boy, via IndieWire. 'In this business, when you make $10m for a film, it's not $10m. Because after the lawyers, and the agents, and the publicist, and the government, it's not $10m, it's $4.5m in your pocket. 'But you're living above that because you're high on the hog. And that's how you lose it. It's very strange, the way it happens. The more money you make, the less you have. 'The kind of money I was spending and where it was going was just a crazy montage of loss. […] And I thought, It's simple. It's clear. I just know this. Time stopped. I am f**ked.' 'Jack and Jill was the first film I made after I lost my money. To be honest, I did it because I didn't have anything else,' he recalled. 'Adam Sandler wanted me, and they paid me a lot for it. So I went out and did it, and it helped. 'I love Adam, he was wonderful to work with and has become a dear friend. He also just happens to be a great actor and a hell of a guy.' There is no denying that Adam has been a major part of the most iconic comedies in recent years, with many of his early 00s films still being quoted today – but he hasn't always been taken seriously by critics. In fact, while he pocketed millions of dollars in his deal with Netflix, he also has nine Razzies to his name and many more nominations. Discussing the harsh criticism he has received throughout his career and whether that 'stings', he told the AARP: 'Sometimes. Mostly because I invite all these amazing people I care about to make movies with me, and I wish they didn't have to read s**t about whatever we've made. 'But I don't get too shook up. I always remember something my father said. He was a tough b*****d. He went through ups and downs in his life, like not having work for a year or two and not telling us. 'I recall one time that something didn't go right for me. I bombed onstage or didn't get an audition. I was upset and probably embarrassed. And he said, 'Adam, you can't always be happy. People aren't always going to like you. You're going to fail.' I said, 'But I just want to be happy, man. I don't want all that other crap.' More Trending 'He said, 'You won't actually know you're happy if you don't feel that other stuff.' Touching on what keeps him going amid negative reactions, he added: 'I like giving myself over to a new challenge. Sometimes I feel like I'm tapped out with new thoughts, and then all of a sudden, something new comes up and I go, 'Okay, how can I make this happen?' 'It was cool as hell pushing myself in new ways like I did on Uncut Gems. Running around the Diamond District in New York, the intensity of that amazing character, or in Hustle, being around the greatest NBA players and not worrying about laughs as much as what each character is going through and pulling for. But I do love comedy more than anything.' Happy Gilmore 2 is released on Netflix on Friday. Got a story? The golf influencer, who boasts four million followers on Instagram, stole the show in a figure-hugging red dress that featured a sheer skirt. Spiranac, 32, was among Hollywood royalty in New York on Monday night because she has a small cameo in the sequel to the beloved 1996 golf comedy. In a teaser trailer, Spiranac is working at Dick's Sporting Goods store and has the job of assisting Happy. In one scene, she watches on helplessly as Adam Sandler's titular character smashes a golf ball through the projector screen. 'The fact that I'm in the Happy Gilmore 2 movie is actually insane lol,' she wrote on X when the trailer was released. In a trailer, Spiranac is working at Dick's Sporting Goods store and has the job of helping Happy Spiranac joined the likes of Sandler, Julie Bowen and Christopher McDonald at Lincoln Center ahead of the film's highly-anticipated release on Friday. She is one of several high-profile names from the world of golf to feature in the movie with Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Scottie Scheffler also making cameos. Travis Kelce also appears, although he was not at the premiere on Monday as he's now back in training camp with the Kansas City Chiefs. Taylor Swift's boyfriend landed a role in the film as a hotel employee, with one scene giving him the chance to share the screen with Bad Bunny. And while Kelce skipped out on the premiere, it's clear he made an impression on Sandler during filming. 'They were both so confident and so funny. They're gonna go on and do whatever the hell they want,' Sandler told The Hollywood Reporter of Kelce and Bad Bunny. 'But I'd love to do something with them again, because I got very friendly with them, and I love them both.' Sandler also joked to Extra TV that he 'didn't want to bother' Kelce's pop star girlfriend about a potential role in the film.
