Cork county councillors vote to increase property tax – by another five per cent in adjustment rate
The revenue raised by the LPT goes to fund local government services. Local authorities are allowed to vary the basic rate of the property tax by applying a Local Adjustment Factor (LAF). Following the vote in Cork County Council, the LAF in the county will now go from the current 10% to 15% in 2026. Three-quarters of the county's houses are valued at under €420,001 and those householders will now face an increase in their annual property tax bill ranging between €4.75 and €16.65, depending on the valuation band that their property is in. The council's director of finance, Lorraine Lynch, told the councillors that an increase in the LAF to 15% would increase the council's funding next year by €1.9m. She said that due to inflation, maintaining council services at their current levels would require an additional €5.6m in 2026. Cllr Patrick Gerard Murphy (Fianna Fail), supported by Cllr Michael Hegarty (Fine Gael), put forward an amendment to the executive's proposal, calling for all of the €7.6 million in extra revenue collected as a result of the increased LPT rate to be allocated directly to municipal districts to fund capital works. 'For the Fianna Fail party here to support the 5% increase, notwithstanding it being a small increase per household, we want to see it being used in a very tangible way that people can actually visualise and see on the ground,' Cllr Murphy said. A counter-proposal to leave the rate at the current 10% was put forward by Independent Ireland's Cllr Danny Collins and seconded by independent Cllr Peter O'Donoghue. 'Basically, we should be going back to our government if we need additional funding for our local authority, it is up to our government to do it. That's where the buck stops. It's not for us to be putting extra pressure on families out there,' Cllr Collins said. Forty-one councillors voted in favour of Cllr Murphy's proposal and nine voted against. Voting in favour were Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the Social Democrats. Voting against were Independent Ireland, Labour, Sinn Fein and independents.

Chevron cuts 575 jobs in Houston after closing Hess acquisition, filing reveals
[BENGALURU] Chevron cut 575 positions in the Houston area after it completed its US$55 billion merger with Hess, a Texas Workforce Commission filing revealed on Wednesday (Jul 23). According to a Worker Adjustment & Retraining Notification dated Jul 18, the US energy major laid off the employees when its takeover of Hess was officially completed. The reductions will take effect on Sep 26, according to the notice. The merger was delayed for over a year but even as the green light for it was awaited, Chevron had been making preparations so it could close the deal with Hess quickly, Reuters previously reported. Information technology workers from Chevron and Hess met regularly to plan the integration, and Hess employees were informed that they could request a severance package following the deal's close. Converting technology and combining employees from both companies would take a few months, Chevron CEO Mike Wirth had said last week. REUTERS

Loss of ‘operational funding' leads to layoffs at Tacoma, Seattle shipping firms
Three local logistics operators tied to same parent company recently announced layoffs of workers in Seattle and Tacoma after the loss of 'operational funding.' MacMillan-Piper, a transloading company that operates six facilities near the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, on July 10 filed a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification with Washington State Employment Security Department. In its letter to the state, the company cited 'sudden and unforeseeable business circumstances resulting from the loss of operational funding.' It stated that MacMillan-Piper LLC 'will be permanently ceasing operations effective July 10, 2025.' Affected locations included two sites in Seattle and three in Tacoma, affecting approximately 92 workers. The affected positions 'include a variety of warehouse, management, operations and support,' the letter stated, also noting the layoffs were 'permanent, and no bumping or recall rights exist.' The company in 2023 was acquired by Oakland-based GSC, a third-party logistics provider. At the time, GSC said, 'The combined MacMillan-Piper and GSC Transport fleet will now exceed 100 trucks to further enhance GSC's known transportation reliability.' GSC also noted that 'the acquisition creates an ideal new network of terminals, yards and chassis strategically located within two miles of both the Seattle and Tacoma ports for GSC.' Additional WARN letters obtained by The News Tribune from the state after two more filings were announced Tuesday offered more clues as to turmoil behind the scenes with both MacMillan-Piper and GSC. One WARN filing listed layoffs affecting 10 workers with GSC Transport in Tacoma, along with another filing for GSC Solutions of Tacoma, affecting seven workers, both also going into effect July 10. Both GSC Solutions' letter and GSC Transport's letter to Washington's Employment Security Department state, 'On July 10, 2025, GSC received confirmation that its primary lender had terminated operational funding. This unexpected and unforeseeable development left the company without viable alternatives.' It added, 'Efforts to secure other financing or complete a business sale were unsuccessful.' Given the details from the three notices, it is unclear whether GSC would be taking on any former MacMillan-Piper workers. Attempts to reach officials with GSC and MacMillan-Piper were unsuccessful. MacMillan-Piper was founded in 1969 by James MacMillan Piper in Seattle and eventually became the largest transloader and container freight station in the Pacific Northwest, according to his 2009 obituary. Piper sold the company to his son-in-law and daughter in 1990, who in turn sold it to another family in 2019 before GSC's eventual acquisition. Industry media site Trucking Dive reported on Tuesday that GSC workers took to LinkedIn with personal announcements of their own layoffs. Those positions, according to the report, included workers in Oakland, California as well as Tacoma and Seattle, and included managerial, planning and client-related posts. GSC for its part, has been posting on LinkedIn, promoting the benefits of the MacMillan-Piper transload sites in both Seattle and Tacoma. In a post from two weeks ago, GSC wrote, 'Since our acquisition of MacMillan-Piper, Inc. in 2023, our 3PL operations in the Pacific Northwest have exceeded expectations.' On its website, it noted, 'GSC has invested heavily in the Seattle and Tacoma markets, building an extensive network of facilities and systems that offer comprehensive logistics solutions. Over the last two years, we've handled more than 20,000 containers in the region, including over 12,000 containers last year, with 3,480 deliveries to Puyallup and Spanaway alone.'

How Singapore Chiropractic Treatment and Adjustment Can Relieve Pain
Pain is something we all experience—whether it's caused by the stresses of daily life, poor posture, sports-related injuries or chronic health issues. In recent years, there has been an increased interest in chiropractic care for drug free and non-invasive approach for pain management in Singapore. Singapore Chiropractic Treatment and Adjustment is growing in popularity as a safe and effective way to address nervous system dysfunction, decrease pain, and increase wellness. What is Chiropractic Treatment? Chiropractic treatment is a healthcare discipline that focuses on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal problems—especially those related to the spine. The core of chiropractic care involves manual adjustments or manipulations of the spine and joints to improve alignment, relieve pressure on nerves, and encourage the body's natural healing. Key Elements of Chiropractic Care: Spinal adjustments to correct misalignments (subluxations) Soft tissue therapy to reduce muscle tension Rehabilitation exercises to improve flexibility and strength Lifestyle and ergonomic advice to prevent future pain Chiropractors are trained professionals who use precise techniques to correct spinal imbalances, which in turn alleviate pain and enhance mobility. Why is Chiropractic Care Gaining Popularity in Singapore? There are several reasons why Singapore Chiropractic Treatment and Adjustment is becoming a preferred choice for people of all ages: Non-invasive and drug-free: No surgery or medications involved Personalized care plans: Tailored to individual needs and goals Focus on root cause: Addresses the underlying issues, not just symptoms Holistic approach: Improves posture, function, and overall quality of life Proven results: Many patients report significant pain reduction and functional improvement Whether you're a working professional, athlete, student, or senior, chiropractic care can play a valuable role in your pain management strategy. Understanding Pain: Causes and Impact Pain can be acute or chronic, mild or debilitating. It often stems from: Poor posture and prolonged sitting Muscle imbalances and overuse Accidents or trauma Herniated discs or spinal misalignments Joint inflammation or arthritis Stress and tension buildup Living with pain affects not just your body, but also your mental health, sleep, productivity, and emotional well-being. Traditional treatment options like painkillers or surgeries have side effects or risks. That's where Singapore Chiropractic Treatment and Adjustment offers a safer, long-term alternative. How Chiropractic Adjustments Relieve Pain Chiropractic adjustments involve the application of controlled force to spinal joints that have become restricted in movement. This technique restores joint mobility, reduces nerve irritation, and improves overall body mechanics. Here's how chiropractic adjustments help relieve pain: Restore Spinal Alignment Misaligned vertebrae can pinch nerves, restrict movement, and cause pain. Adjustments correct the alignment, relieving pressure and restoring function. Reduce Nerve Compression Compressed nerves can cause pain to radiate to other parts of the body (e.g., sciatica). Realigning the spine alleviates this compression, leading to pain relief. Improve Blood Circulation Proper alignment ensures better blood flow and oxygen supply to muscles and tissues, promoting healing and reducing inflammation. Enhance Joint Mobility Chiropractic techniques help restore normal motion to stiff joints, reducing discomfort and stiffness. Stimulate Natural Healing By eliminating interference in the nervous system, chiropractic adjustments allow the body to heal naturally, without medication. Common Conditions Treated with Singapore Chiropractic Treatment and Adjustment Chiropractors in Singapore treat a wide range of conditions. Let's explore some of the most common ones: 1. Lower Back Pain Back pain is the leading reason people visit chiropractors. Adjustments help realign the spine, reduce inflammation, and relax tense muscles. 2. Neck Pain Prolonged screen time and poor posture lead to neck stiffness. Chiropractic care eases tension and restores mobility in the cervical spine. 3. Headaches and Migraines Spinal misalignments and muscle tension can trigger tension headaches and migraines. Regular adjustments reduce their frequency and intensity. 4. Shoulder Pain and Frozen Shoulder Chiropractic adjustments and soft tissue therapy relieve joint restriction and improve range of motion. 5. Sciatica Compression of the sciatic nerve causes radiating pain down the leg. Chiropractic treatment addresses the root spinal cause of sciatica. 6. Herniated or Bulging Discs Non-surgical spinal decompression and adjustments help reposition the disc and relieve nerve pressure. 7. Postural Imbalances Office workers and students often suffer from forward head posture and slouched backs. Chiropractic care corrects these issues, preventing long-term damage. 8. Sports Injuries Chiropractors treat strains, sprains, and joint misalignments from sports activities, aiding faster recovery and injury prevention. The Chiropractic Process: What to Expect If you're new to Singapore Chiropractic Treatment and Adjustment, here's what a typical care process looks like: Initial Consultation The chiropractor reviews your medical history, lifestyle habits, and symptoms to understand the root cause of your pain. Physical Examination This includes spinal palpation, range of motion tests, muscle assessments, and possibly X-rays or posture scans. Personalized Treatment Plan Based on findings, the chiropractor designs a tailored treatment plan, including adjustments, therapy, and exercises. Chiropractic Adjustments Using manual techniques or instruments, the chiropractor applies precise force to correct joint restrictions. Rehabilitation and Home Care You may receive guidance on stretching, strengthening, and ergonomic practices to support long-term wellness. Benefits of Singapore Chiropractic Treatment and Adjustment Here are the key benefits you can expect: Pain Relief Effective for back, neck, joint, and headache pain—often with immediate results after the first few sessions. Improved Posture Chiropractic care helps correct posture imbalances caused by modern lifestyle habits. Greater Flexibility and Mobility Joint adjustments and therapy restore your body's natural range of motion. Enhanced Nervous System Function A well-aligned spine means better communication between the brain and body. Reduced Reliance on Medications By addressing pain naturally, you may reduce your dependency on painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs. Better Sleep and Mood Less pain and muscle tension contribute to better sleep quality and mental clarity. Is Chiropractic Safe? Yes—Singapore Chiropractic Treatment and Adjustment is generally considered safe when performed by licensed professionals. Chiropractors undergo years of training and use evidence-based techniques. They also ensure that treatment is appropriate for your age, condition, and medical history. Side effects, if any, are minor and temporary—such as slight soreness or fatigue after an adjustment, much like post-exercise stiffness. Tips to Maximize Chiropractic Results To get the most out of your chiropractic journey, consider the following: Be consistent with appointments and home exercises Stay active to support spinal health and mobility Follow ergonomic advice for workstations, sleep posture, etc. Hydrate and eat well to aid tissue recovery Communicate openly with your chiropractor about progress or discomfort Choosing the Right Chiropractor in Singapore Not all chiropractors are the same. Here's what to look for when selecting a chiropractor: Certified and licensed professionals Experience treating your specific condition Clear explanation of treatment plans Positive reviews and patient testimonials Modern facilities and equipment A holistic, patient-centered approach Conclusion Pain can be life-diminishing — but it needn't be.
