Sloppy defending cost Pompey
A reminder for Portsmouth this afternoon that one poor 15 minute spell is often enough to lose in the Championship. Despite a frantic finale they couldn't recover from those sloppy opening looked like a bad day all round for Pompey but Adrian Segecic's late strike and 10 minutes added time created a grandstand finish. The Blues were close to an equaliser numerous times, Connor Ogilvie was left mystified as to how he was booked for diving when he thought he should have had a were the bane of John Mousinho's life last season and he faces a nervous wait for Callum Lang's hamstring to be scanned. A lengthy time out would be a huge blow given how he's started the season.

'We deserved something'
Oxford boss Gary Rowett felt his side could have taken a point from the 1-0 defeat to Portsmouth - and did not blame Cameron Brannagan for his error that led to the only Brannagan lost the ball in the build-up to Adrian Segecic's said: "It was one mistake and that was the main factor in the game."Other than that Portsmouth edged the game without creating a lot of moments, but one mistake gives them that little bit of impetus to hold on to, and they defended well."The last 20 minutes was exactly what you would hope - there was more of an edge to us and more quality, there were some great balls in the box and more shots."From that last 20 minutes I thought we deserved something from the game."

A-League recruit lauded after goal on English debut
Australian new boy Adrian Segecic has made an "unbelievable start" to life in England's Championship, scoring the winner for Portsmouth as they opened the season with a 1-0 win away at Oxford. The passionately supported South Coast side, who have four Aussies on their books, were left hugely enthused on Saturday after their latest recruit, snapped up from Sydney FC in June, capped a fine display with his 38th-minute goal. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder's all-action display, topped by his well-taken bending strike from the edge of the box after a rebound, left Segecic beaming: "To be able to get a goal with three points on debut was an unbelievable start. "I was told on the Friday that I was starting the game, which was great to hear and I couldn't ask for much more." Pompey's manager John Mousinho purred that he wouldn't have fancied having to face the busy youngster. "Segecic was great, not just to get the winning goal but his work rate was superb as well," Mousinho said. "His pressing was great and he picked himself up into some very nice pockets at times, and he took his goal really well, so I was really impressed with him on his debut." After showing plenty of creativity as well as application in the No.10 shirt at Oxford's Kassam Stadium, the famously passionate Pompey fans gave Segecic a rousing reception when he came off in the dying seconds to be replaced by fellow young Aussie Thomas Waddingham. "To go over and celebrate with the fans at the final whistle was amazing," added Segecic, who's hoping a big season in England's second division will help him nail down a place in the Socceroos' World Cup finals squad. He scored 13 goals for the Sky Blues last season, enough to make him the A-League Men's top scorer alongside Archie Goodwin. Portsmouth hold great store by their young Australian talent, with Socceroo Hayden Matthews, an unused sub on Saturday, as well as national under-23 defender Jacob Farrell also on their books. With teams in England's second tier dreaming of starting their push for the Premier League in winning style, ambitious newly promoted Wrexham got a rude awakening at Southampton as they went down 2-1 after two late goals. Wrexham, playing non-league soccer just three years ago until their spectacular rise began under celebrity co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, led at halftime through a Josh Windass penalty. But substitute Ryan Manning, with a stunning free kick, and a Jack Stephens winner six minutes into stoppage time was hardly the sort of Hollywood ending Wrexham have become used to. Ruben Selles' tenure as Sheffield United boss got off to a nightmare start with a 4-1 home defeat by Bristol City, while Harvey Knibbs scored five minutes into stoppage time as Charlton marked their return to the Championship with a 1-0 win over Watford. Adrian Segecic scores in winning English Championship debut for Portsmouth
Reigning A-League Golden Boot Adrian Segecic has made an immediate impression for Portsmouth, scoring the only goal in his new club's opening game of the English Championship season. The former Sydney FC star, who shared Golden Boot honours last season with Adelaide United's Archie Goodwin, hit the target on Sunday morning (AEST) in Pompey's 1-0 away win over Oxford United. 'I scored a goal and the team picked up all three points – I couldn't really ask for a better debut than that,' a delighted Segecic told his club's website. Segecic produced a composed finish in the 38th minute when the ball fell for him on the edge of the penalty area after a shot from teammate Colby Bishop had been saved by Oxford goalkeeper Jamie Cumming. 'I thought Colby was going to put the ball in the back of the net, but it fell for me perfectly on my left foot,' he said. 'That's the area where I'm most clinical.' Debut DELIGHT. ✨ — Portsmouth FC (@Pompey) August 9, 2025 Segecic felt 'pretty relaxed' before the game. 'I know that if I work hard when I'm on the pitch, then the rest will take care of itself,' he said. Portsmouth manager John Mousinho was thrilled with Segecic's display. 'I thought Adrian was great,' Mousinho said. 'Not only did he get the winning goal, but the workrate was absolutely superb. The pressing as a number 10 was great and he was able to find those pockets. 'I was impressed with his debut.' Segecic was replaced in stoppage time by another Australian attacker, former Brisbane Roar striker Thomas Waddingham, while Socceroos defender Hayden Matthews was an unused substitute for Pompey. However, while it was good news for Segecic, former A-League prodigy Nestory Irankunda tasted defeat in his official debut for Watford. Irankunda, who moved last month from Bayern Munich to the Hornets, was a second-half substitute in the English Championship club's 1-0 away loss to Charlton Athletic. With the score at 0-0 deep into the contest, 19-year-old Irankunda seemed to be brought down in the penalty area by Charlton goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski. However, the referee waved play on, with Charlton soon after securing all three points with a stoppage-time goal from Harvey Knibbs. Meanwhile, Socceroos pair Sam Silvera and Cameron Burgess went head-to-head at Riverside Stadium, and it was former Central Coast Mariners star Silvera that came out on top as part of a Middlesbrough side that beat Burgess' Swansea outfit 1-0. Elsewhere on the opening weekend of the English Championship season, Australian midfielder Massimo Luongo came off the bench in his Millwall side's 2-1 away win over Norwich City, while Socceroos right-back Lewis Miller was also a second-half substitute in his debut for a Blackburn Rovers side that suffered a 1-0 away loss to West Bromwich Albion.
