Embrace change, Afdlin tells PKR after leadership poll results
Setiawangsa PKR chief Afdlin Shauki said the party has undergone many changes over the years, and what he witnessed has changed him as a person as well. JOHOR BAHRU : Setiawangsa PKR chief Afdlin Shauki has urged party members to accept the outcome of the central leadership polls, reminding them that change is the only constant in life. Speaking at the PKR congress, Afdlin pointed out that change in politics is inevitable and must be embraced. 'In the 15th general election, we fought tooth and nail. Then, after the results, we ended up working with our rivals,' he said, in an apparent reference to Barisan Nasional and having to work with the former political foes in the unity government. 'So, we must accept change, just like how we need to accept the results from yesterday's party elections.' He said the party has undergone many changes over the years, and admitted that what he witnessed has changed him as a person as well. 'When our prime minister forgave Dr Mahathir Mohamad, I was stunned. But it made me realise – if he can do that, then surely we all can change,' he said. Afdlin was referring to when Anwar in October 2018 said he had forgiven the former prime minister even though he received no apology. In the party's central leadership polls yesterday, former Permatang Pauh MP Nurul Izzah Anwar was elected the new PKR deputy president. She garnered 9,803 votes for a landslide victory over the incumbent, Rafizi Ramli, who managed to get only 3,866 votes. Nurul Izzah and Rafizi were engaged in a heated straight fight for the number two post – a position Rafizi won in the 2022 party elections. Afdlin said that he had joined PKR when it was still in the opposition because he was told that 'being in the opposition is sexy'. 'But once we became the government, half the 'sexiness' disappeared. We need to do what Justin Timberlake said, to 'bring sexy back', because Reformasi is far from over. 'Reformasi is still ongoing, it's still a work in progress,' Afdlin said.

‘Professional comedian' Afdlin hits back at Rafizi's jibe, says joke risks mocking PKR grassroots' choice
KUALA LUMPUR, May 13 – Setiawangsa PKR division chief Datuk Afdlin Shauki has responded to party deputy president Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli's recent remarks that referred to him as a 'professional comedian', stressing that such comments risk undermining the legitimacy of his grassroots mandate. Afdlin acknowledged Rafizi's contributions to the party and reform movement, but said the characterisation, even if made in jest, carried connotations that could diminish the value of his electoral victory and the support he received from party members. 'I am not ashamed of being called a comedian... but when such labels are used in a context that questions my qualifications and the mandate I received, they take on a different meaning,' Afdlin said in a statement on Facebook, along with a photo of him placing a finger over his lips. He added that the implication of his entertainment background being less credible than traditional political experience was disrespectful to the party members who voted for him. Afdlin also pointed out that his win was not an isolated one, but part of a broader victory for his team in the division, including the deputy division chief, vice chief, committee members, and Youth chief. He said he had stepped forward to serve the party at a time when it was struggling post-Sheraton Move, rather than waiting for political fortunes to improve. Afdlin, who has worked for over three decades in the creative industry, said the arts have taught him to listen, empathise, and understand the public's pulse, qualities he believes are essential in political leadership. 'Politics without a sense of humanity is just a dry exercise in power management,' he said, adding that he seeks to serve as a bridge between the creative sector and compassionate governance. He stressed the importance of inclusivity within PKR, calling on party leaders to respect diverse backgrounds and refrain from elitist remarks that could alienate supporters. Afdlin said he remained open to working with Rafizi and other party leaders to strengthen the division and advance the party's mission, but would not stay silent when his integrity was called into question. He concluded his statement by urging the party to respect grassroots decisions and focus on serving the people rather than engaging in internal mockery. Afdlin shocked the public last month after beating party vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad in the division chief contest.

I'm a comedian but I don't clown around with politics, says Afdlin
Actor-comedian Afdlin Shauki had defeated PKR vice-president Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad in the divisional elections last month, winning the Setiawangsa chairmanship by 631 votes to 563. PETALING JAYA : Setiawangsa PKR chief Afdlin Shauki says he is not ashamed of being called a 'professional comedian', but strongly objects to the label being used to cast doubt on his leadership and grassroots support. Responding to PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, who reportedly made the remark during a campaign event on Saturday night, he said such comments carried weight even if it was meant in jest. A veteran of the entertainment industry, Afdlin said he has spent more than three decades in the arts shaping public awareness, and sees no conflict between his creative background and his political role. 'I am not ashamed of being called a comedian, nor of being a director, producer, writer, educator, and social activist. It is part of my identity as an artist. It is also how I have supported my family all these years,' he said in a Facebook post. 'But when that label is used to question my qualifications and the leadership mandate given by grassroots members, it takes on a different meaning. 'It implies that the voices of those who voted for me are undeserving of respect simply because I did not come from a 'political factory'.' Afdlin also dismissed the idea that his victory was a fluke, pointing out that his entire Setiawangsa team, including the deputy chief, youth chief and committee members, had won. 'This is not a personal victory; it is a collective voice from the grassroots calling for new energy and leadership that is willing to work on the ground, not just appear on stage in discourse forums,' he said. He urged PKR to embrace members from all walks of life, including artists and professionals, instead of limiting politics to the elites. 'I believe that if we truly want to keep PKR relevant, we must celebrate differences, not belittle them,' he said. He said he remains open to dialogue and collaboration, even with Rafizi, but would not remain silent if his integrity or the will of party members is publicly ridiculed. 'Let us return to the core of our struggle: respect the grassroots' decision, embrace diverse backgrounds, and work for the people, not for mutual praise.' The actor-comedian had defeated Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad in the divisional elections last month, winning the chairmanship by 631 votes to 563. Afdlin joined PKR in 2021 and had previously contested the same post in 2022, losing to Nik Nazmi, a two-term Setiawangsa MP, PKR vice-president and federal minister.
