Israel's war on Gaza has killed 209 Palestinian journalists: Ambassador Khattabi - Foreign Affairs
An estimated 209 Palestinian journalists have been killed during Israel's ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi said on Friday, calling the toll 'unprecedented' and a grave assault on press freedom. Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector at the Arab League, made the statement on World Press Freedom Day, warning that the conflict has become one of the deadliest for media professionals in modern history. Speaking from Cairo, Khattabi highlighted Israel's genocidal war in Gaza as a daily assault marked by the widespread killing of civilians—especially women and children—alongside the collapse of humanitarian access and systematic targeting of journalists. He accused Israel of deliberately barring international media from entering Gaza while targeting local reporters in 'flagrant breach of international legal conventions.' The Arab League marked World Press Freedom Day by issuing a formal statement honouring the role of independent media in challenging disinformation and resisting what it called 'false Israeli narratives.' Khattabi called for urgent international action to protect journalists in conflict zones, including the development of new legal frameworks to respond to the specific risks of modern warfare and digital surveillance. 'This must be pursued through multilateral cooperation with international and regional bodies,' he said, advocating for a legal system that guarantees the physical safety and moral protection of journalists working under fire. He also stressed the need for a 'balanced approach' to press freedom—one that upholds journalistic ethics and combats disinformation while defending the right to access information and speak truth to power. The occasion, he said, is a time to honour the sacrifices of journalists who risk — and often lose — their lives in pursuit of truth. World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on 3 May, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 following a recommendation by UNESCO, to recognise the role of a free press in promoting accountability, transparency, and human rights. The meeting is scheduled to take place on 5–6 May at the headquarters of the General Secretariat of the League of Arab States. The meeting will be chaired by the State of Kuwait, the official sponsor of the award, and will see the participation of representatives from the Member States of the committee, namely: the Kingdom of Bahrain, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Sultanate of Oman, the State of Palestine, the State of Qatar, the Lebanese Republic, and the Arab Republic of Egypt. On this occasion, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communications Sector, affirmed that this edition is being held under the theme "Arab Youth and New Media" in response to the rapid developments within the media landscape, particularly the rise of digital platforms and their profound impact on societal sectors—especially the youth, who represent the most engaged and influenced demographic in the digital and social media realm. Ambassador Khattabi stated that the Arab Media Excellence Award, launched in 2015 pursuant to Resolution 409 of the Council of Arab Information Ministers at its 46th session, seeks to recognise and honour outstanding media contributions in the Arab world. The award is designed to spotlight media excellence and creativity that address issues of relevance to the Arab nation. It includes four primary categories: television, radio, press, and digital media. He further noted that the award has undergone significant qualitative enhancements in recent years, with broadened scope and diversified content, thereby reinforcing its role as an incentive for professional excellence across the media spectrum. To date, the General Secretariat has received over 140 nominations across the various award categories. During the session, committee members will assess submissions presented by member states, as well as organisations and unions with observer status at the Council of Arab Information Ministers. Entries will be evaluated based on their alignment with the criteria and standards set forth in the award's bylaws, which outline the conditions and mechanisms for participation. Arab League Statement on Media Day
Mohamed Mandour In implementation of the resolution adopted by the Council of Arab Information Ministers at its 46th ordinary session, the League of Arab States commemorates Arab Media Day on 21 April of each year. On this occasion, Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General and head of the Media and Communication Sector, affirmed that this year's Arab Media Day comes amid the continuing Israeli aggression and blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip which has left thousands dead, injured, or missing, in addition to the widespread destruction of public and private infrastructure, including health, educational, and social facilities. Such atrocities represent a blatant and grave violation of the principles of international humanitarian law, particularly those ensuring the protection of civilians, including medical personnel, rescue teams, and members of the press. Ambassador Khattabi stated that this asymmetric war has led to the killing of 209 journalists since 8 October 2023—an appalling toll that constitutes an unprecedented escalation in the history of conflicts. He further denounced the systematic and deliberate practices of the Israeli occupation authorities against journalists, which include deportation, physical assaults, arbitrary arrests, the confiscation of media equipment, the suppression of digital platforms, and the restriction of internet access. He stressed the urgent need to establish robust mechanisms to ensure the safety and protection of journalists operating in conflict zones. He affirmed the importance of reinforcing the existing legal frameworks—namely the Geneva Conventions and their Additional Protocols, the International Convention on the Safety of Journalists and Media Professionals, and the relevant resolutions of the United Nations and UNESCO—through comprehensive reforms and enhanced implementation measures. read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia Lifestyle Pistachio and Raspberry Cheesecake Domes Recipe News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Videos & Features Bouchra Dahlab Crowned Miss Arab World 2025 .. Arab League calls for collective efforts to preserve radio
Ammon News - The Arab League has called for collective efforts to preserve radio and build a future in which its role in spreading information, promoting culture, and fostering peace continues. The League stressed that radio is an integral part of the social and cultural fabric of societies, serving as a bridge between generations and cultures. This statement was issued today on the occasion of World Radio Day, a day declared by UNESCO in 2011 to be celebrated on 13th February every year. This day marks the first radio broadcast by the United Nations in 1946 and was officially adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012. Ambassador Ahmed Rashid Khattabi, Assistant Secretary-General of the Arab League and Head of the Media and Communication Sector, said that the celebration of this day comes in recognition of radio as a media platform and its role in raising awareness of the value of public audio services. He also emphasised the importance of fostering cooperation between major networks and local radio stations to ensure access to various information and its benefits. He noted that this day provides an opportunity to strengthen international cooperation among broadcast organisations. Khattabi affirmed that due to radio's adaptability and flexibility, it continues to keep pace with the changing media landscape, despite the significant challenges posed by the digital era and social media platforms to traditional media outlets. He added that the Arab League is keen to celebrate this occasion, having been proactive in encouraging and recognising radio as a widely influential community media tool. In its second edition of the Arab Media Excellence Award in 2017, the League dedicated the award to radio under the theme 'The Role of Radio in Serving Society.' WAM
