Villages in Gujarat witness return of illegal immigrants from the US
Ahmedabad: Several villages in north Gujarat are witnessing a quiet but steady influx of elderly couples and single adults who once left Indian shores for the United States, many of them as illegal immigrants. Now, they are self-deporting to avoid detention as the Trump administration enforces stricter immigration laws. Dingucha, Jhulasan, Jetalpur, Nardipur, and other villages have observed a noticeable rise in population over the past few months, with many such returnees. Local officials and sources estimate the number of self-deportees to be at least 220. Many of them were recently issued Aadhaar cards and have settled back in villages across Mehsana and Gandhinagar districts, long identified by state and central agencies as hubs for illegal immigration. "They no longer have the option of shelter or asylum and want to avoid legal trouble. That's why they are leaving voluntarily," he said. A recent case involves a 65-year-old Mehsana resident. He entered the US illegally in 2009 and returned to Gujarat via Delhi on July 7. On arrival, he was booked for allegedly cheating the Indian immigration system. "In the last three to four months, Dingucha has seen around 100 new residents, many seeking local documents," said Hasmukh Parmar, the village talati. Residents note the change. "Earlier, the village was sparsely populated, with many people in the US. Now, temple courtyards and benches in gathering spots are full again. Those who have returned stand out — they are fairer, healthier, and well-dressed," said Bhavin Patel, a Pansar resident. Bragging about wealth led to Sanand youth's murder, two arrested
1 2 Ahmedabad: A young factory worker's bragging about his wealthy background allegedly cost him his life. Sanand police say 19-year-old Niranjan Sharma was killed by three acquaintances, who fooled into thinking he was rich, plotted to extort money from his family. The Bihar native's body, found in June, led to an investigation that spanned multiple states. Two suspects have been caught, while one is still evading arrest. Police arrested Ravikumar Rai of Sanand, originally from Sahebganj in Jharkhand, and Sonalkumar Buksar of Bihar. The third suspect, Sunnykumar Mandal of Bhagalpur, Bihar, is still absconding. On June 10, police discovered the unidentified body of a young man, around 20 years old, in an isolated field. Initially, they registered it as a case of accidental death. Investigations took a sharp turn after the victim's identity was established and phone call records placed the suspects near him shortly before his death. You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad According to police, the victim and accused worked in the same factory. "Niranjan often boasted about belonging to a wealthy family, which allegedly motivated the trio to hatch a ransom plot. They lured him to a local hotel under the pretext of having tea, where Sunnykumar is accused of strangling him from behind with a pillow, while Sonalkumar held his legs and Ravikumar restrained his arms. The killing reportedly took place when Niranjan refused to part with money," said police. To dispose of the body, the accused bought a trolley bag from a nearby store, stuffed the body inside, and dumped it in an isolated area. They later took the trolley to South Gujarat before fleeing to their respective hometowns. The investigation, led by inspector G G Solanki, involved multiple teams who followed up on tip-offs and analysed call details to identify and trace the accused. Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Jat said the accused's mobile location data, coupled with their sudden disappearance from work, made them prime suspects. Rai and Buksar were traced and arrested from their home states, while a police team is in Bhagalpur pursuing Mandal. Ravi Kumar and Sonal Kumar now face charges under several sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including murder and criminal conspiracy. The search for Sunnykumar Mandal continues. Civic body gives root to new idea, plants fruit-bearing trees on roadsides
Ahmedabad: With the Mission 4 Million Trees campaign on with full zeal, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is hoping that the fruits of its labour will be sweet, and many. For the first time, the civic body is branching out with a novel experiment — of planting fruit-bearing trees on open plots and roadsides. So far, 75,000 trees, including mango, tamarind, guava, pomegranate, Indian jujube, and custard apple, have been planted. As these trees grow, they will provide both shade and fruit to the citizens. These are part of the 26.50 lakh saplings planted by AMC's parks and gardens department till Aug 6 under the Rs 69 crore Mission 4 Million Trees, a campaign that attempts to meet the target by Sep. On May 30 AMC the heritage and recreational committee had approved a proposal to plant 4 million trees during monsoon this year over 525,000 to 650,000 sq m of land across the city and maintain them for two years. Plots were earmarked, and a public-private partnership approach with various organisations was adopted. A panel of four agencies was set up to plant approximately 4 million trees over 552,000 square metres of land. A C Patel, head of the parks and gardens department, said, "AMC plans to plant 4.01 million trees across various plots and other locations in the city, with 2.65 million already planted by Aug 6. We have achieved 66.23% of the Mission 4 Million Trees target so far, with plans to complete it by Sep-end. This time, we are also planting fruit-bearing trees, which currently constitute 3 to 3.5% of the total plantation." You Can Also Check: Ahmedabad AQI | Weather in Ahmedabad | Bank Holidays in Ahmedabad | Public Holidays in Ahmedabad Notably, over the past six years, the department has planted more than 10 million trees. In the years 2019-20, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23, 2023-24, and 2024-25, the corporation planted 11,58,387, 10,13,856, 12.82,014, 20,75,431, 20,06,190, and 30,13,151 trees, respectively. In 2025-26, 26.50 lakh trees were planted, with 3,05,000 planted by the department using the Miyawaki method and 1,694,000 by private agencies. Additionally, 40,901 trees were planted through public-private partnerships using the Miyawaki method. Various other locations, including roadsides, plot boundaries, railway side plantations, lake plantations, canal plantations, garden plantations, govt premises plantations, roadside, and central verge plantations, were also utilised for planting. A total of 51,000 saplings were distributed via a mobile application, with 43,565 given for free. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
