Mumbai: Megastar Amitabh Bachchan has expressed his grief over the devastating Air India Dreamliner incident, which killed 241 people on board. He said he is ' filled with remorse' and that may grief transform into solidarity in honouring lost lives. Big B took to his blog and wrote: 'Most pained and filled with immense remorse on the Air India crash… empathy and support for the lives lost of our people , and across all nations and communities… may grief transform into solidarity in honouring lost lives…' 'Through transparent investigation, let there be sustained remembrance .. and resilience .. for meaningful action and prompt lessons .. and for the healing of all,' he added. An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12 afternoon. The aircraft, operating as Flight AI-171 from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, plunged into a residential complex near BJ Medical College, killing 241 people on board. The aircraft took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1.38 p.m. (IST) on Thursday before losing control moments later and crashing into a densely populated area, igniting a massive blaze and triggering emergency response teams across the city. According to officials, only one person, a British national of Indian origin seated in 11A, survived the crash and is currently undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Air India plane crash: Anxious wait for relatives of people deemed 'missing'

Relatives of a victim mourn outside a hospital in Ahmedabad AHMEDABAD: Even as the on-ground toll in the Air India Dreamliner crash rose to 33, with 29 more bodies being found or identified on Friday, the families of several people still deemed 'missing' continued to wait anxiously for news of their kin. Ashok Patni, who lives nearby, said his 55-year-old uncle had been missing since the crash. "He was at the crash site around that time. We have been searching for him since. My cousin gave a blood sample to help determine whether one of the bodies is that of my uncle." Another person reported missing is Arshdeep Banga, a 20-year-old IT professional. "We pray he is safe," said his mother, Ranjit Kaur, a resident of Meghaninagar. Nilam Patni, a resident of Meghaninagar, lost her 14-year-old brother in the tragedy, while her mother, Sita Patni, is in intensive care. "My mother is a street vendor who sits near the New Mental Hospital compound. My brother had gone to deliver her lunch and dozed off beside her," she said. DNA collection started at BJ Medical College early on Friday. By afternoon, 219 samples had been collected from relatives of the victims. Bodies of eight identified victims were immediately handed over to their families, officials said.

Ahmedabad plane crash: Just can't believe my luck, says 'The Man Who Lived'

Viswashkumar Ramesh's mother (R) mourns for her other son Ajay, who was on the same flight, in Leicester on Friday AHMEDABAD: Viswashkumar Ramesh just walked out from the wreckage of a burning and battered aircraft that took with it the lives of everyone else who had checked in with him. He stumbled away from the torn Air India Dreamliner with minor bruises on his face and mild burns on his arms. As the world wonders how, with incredulous news anchors asking that question from television studios in almost every part of the globe, the 40-year-old British national will perhaps for the rest of his life have to live with the agony and ecstasy of a miracle few have or will witness in their time on this earth. From his hospital bed in Ahmedabad, a still-rattled Viswash said on Friday, "I can't believe that I survived. For some time, I thought I too was going to die. Sir (PM Modi) asked me what happened. I told him I don't know... It all happened so fast." Not surprisingly, 11A - the seat Viswash occupied - has now become a universal lucky number. '5-10 secs after take-off, I felt plane was stuck...' The miracle survivor had a special visitor on Friday. PM Narendra Modi spoke to him in Gujarati at the hospital where he is recuperating, Dhirendra Somabhai, Viswash's cousin, told TOI. "Kevu chhe tane? (How are you feeling?)," Modi asked, before inquiring if he was receiving good care. Viswash replied that he was feeling better. "Viswash lost Ajay, his younger brother, in the crash. The PM offered him his condolences and asked him to remain strong and take care of the family," said Somabhai. "When I opened my eyes after the plane went down, I realised I was alive. I saw charred bodies of an air hostess and elderly passengers," Viswash later said. "I unfastened the seatbelt and escaped." Ajay was seated in a different row, on 11J. He is among the victims whose DNA confirmation is awaited. Viswash, originally from Diu, said immediately after take-off, he sensed something was wrong. "Within five to 10 seconds, I felt the plane had got stuck... The lights turned white and green. The plane was trying to race for take-off, and then it crashed..." He was lucky his side of the aircraft did not fall on the hostel for medical students. "That part landed on the ground, and I could see there was space outside (to move). So, when my door broke, I attempted an escape and was successful," he said. "The other side was blocked by a wall so nobody could have escaped from there." Viswash's father, who resides in London, is scheduled to arrive in Ahmedabad on Saturday to attend the last rites of Ajay. Viswash and Ajay, along with their families and parents, have lived in London for 15 years, managing a garment business in England and a fishing operation in Diu.

Urologist braves blaze, smoke to save family

Ahmedabad: As flames devoured their building, a young mother clutched her sleeping children, unsure if they would live to see another day. In the chaos following Thursday's Air India Dreamliner crash, it was not emergency services but a father's desperate dash through fire that saved his family. Dr Pratik Chaudhary, a urologist at Civil Hospital, lives on the second floor of Atylyam 4 with his wife Himani, their one-and-a-half-year-old son, his elderly parents, and his sister and her three-year-old daughter. At the time of the crash, Himani, both children, her sister, and Chaudhary's father were at home. "I was just scrolling through my phone while the children were asleep," said Himani. "Then, out of nowhere, there was a loud blast. Within seconds, we were surrounded by fire and smoke. Everything turned dark. We couldn't see or breathe." Himani made a frantic call to her husband, who was on duty at Civil Hospital, just 1.5 km away. Chaudhary dashed toward his house. By the time he reached home, the fire had intensified. Grabbing a fire extinguisher and joined by a fellow urologist friend, he fought his way into the building. "We were holding the children tightly when he arrived," Himani said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "He (Chaudhary) led us out through the smoke, one hand holding us, the other clearing the path. We couldn't see anything… but he got us out." Though worried about the children's exposure to smoke, they were found safe. The little ones have since been sent to their paternal village in Visnagar to recover. Back at the charred remains of their home, Himani stood in disbelief, salvaging what little was left — a few utensils, kitchen tools, and some bedsheets. "We've lost so much. But we're here and my children are here," she said. "We were saved mainly because of my husband's alertness and bravery. I don't know where we'll go now… but we're alive. That's everything."
