Summer Hacks To Survive Japan's Heat

Tokyo summer is here, and one thing we can all agree on is that it's brutal. This time of year, ' atsuidesune ' (it's so hot) becomes a common greeting, and the humidity sticks to us like a second, unwanted skin. Because the heat is so intense, though, Japan — the country of convenience and innovation — has plenty of tools to keep its population cool. Here are some of our favorite ways of surviving the worst of summer in Japan. List of Contents: Get With the Sun Umbrella Program Wear Uniqlo's Airism Innerwear Keep Cooling Body Wipes on Standby Cooling Spray and a Portable Fan Try Grapefruit Ice Box With Pocari Freeze Your Drinks Make Use of Japanese Peppermint Oil Eat Cooling Foods Find Refuge Indoors Bonus: Bring a Light Layer Related Posts Get With the Sun Umbrella Program If you're one of the people who can't wrap your head around the Japanese culture of using a sun umbrella, it's time to grow up. The sun umbrella — or sumbrella , as I like to call it — acts as a portable shade, and is incredibly effective at keeping you cool, especially on days with a high UV index. Plus, it protects your hair, face and shoulders from sun damage. Wear Uniqlo's Airism Innerwear Uniqlo's Airism line is a summer staple for a reason. From underwear, loungewear, tops and even masks and bedding, Airism incorporates moisture-wicking and anti-odor technology in their fabrics to keep people comfortable in the summer months. The fabrics actually feel cool to the touch; layering in the summer might sound counterintuitive, but wearing an Airism undershirt helps keep you cooler than going without. Keep Cooling Body Wipes on Standby Another Japanese summer must-have is cooling body wipes, sold at most convenience stores and pharmacies, especially in the hotter months. The most notable brands are Gatsby, Bioré and Sea Breeze, and they're perfect for wiping away any sweat to leave your skin feeling clean and cool. Incorporating menthol into the wipes, most brands claim to cool down the body by three degrees Celsius. Cooling Spray and a Portable Fan Along the same lines of cooling body wipes, Japan also sells cooling body sprays. After spraying it on your neck and decolletage, blast yourself with a portable fan — sold in most electronic stores, pharmacies or at Don Quijote — for a super effective cooling experience. Our SNS director Lisa claims this technique makes her literally shiver. Try Grapefruit Ice Box With Pocari This trick is from Christian, our digital content manager: He fills a Morinaga Ice Box (a cup filled with grapefruit flavored ice cubes that flavor a drink as they melt) and then pours Pocari Sweat — or any drink of choice — over it for a cold, refreshing drink that is guaranteed to rehydrate. Freeze Your Drinks Japanese kids grow up taking a frozen bottle of water or barley tea on summer field trips. The frozen drink not only keeps their bento from spoiling in the summer heat, but it gradually melts, allowing kids to take cold sips of tea throughout the entire day. Just beware to not freeze any carbonated drinks, as it might cause the bottle to expand and explode. Make Use of Japanese Peppermint Oil This is a classic Japanese trick that's been used for generations. Hakka , or Japanese mint, has a uniquely high concentration of menthol, giving it its soothing and cooling properties. Throughout the summer, you can rub hakka oil into your neck or temples, or put a couple drops into your bath tub for a refreshing soak. Eat Cooling Foods Ayurveda, a 3,000-year-old medicinal system, has a lot to teach about surviving the summer, including eating water-filled fruits and vegetables to stay hydrated and cool. Try incorporating watermelon, cucumbers, aloe vera, coriander and berries into your diet to naturally cool your body down. Additionally, Japan has a lot of refreshing summer foods, like somen, cold soba, hiyayakko (cold tofu) and kakigori (shaved ice), all of which are perfect for summer days when you can't work up an appetite. The Best Cold Ramen Spots in Tokyo: Where To Eat Hiyashi Chuka Noodles Find Refuge Indoors After everything is said and done, the most sure-fire way to keep cool is staying indoors. Summer in Japan is no joke; if you don't want to be at home all day, try checking out a cute cafe , local library , museum or any indoor space, and try not to be outside for more than a couple of hours at a time. Bonus: Bring a Light Layer On the flip side, we spend so much time trying to stay cool that we forget AC is blasting in most indoor spaces throughout the summer. The combination of air conditioning and sweat can make for a drastic temperature difference that could shock your body; make a habit of carrying a cardigan or light jacket with you so you don't catch a cold. 'Can use e-mart credits?' Netizens poke fun at Uniqlo's 'admin T-shirt', Singapore News

If you're looking to steal your boyfriend's style, it seems you need not look further than Uniqlo. Uniqlo is now selling a T-shirt that looks strikingly similar to the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) admin T-shirt — a staple worn by full-time national servicemen (NSFs) across the country — according to a Reddit post last Saturday (May 24). In the post, Reddit user Naufrage92 shared a photograph of a Uniqlo mannequin wearing a shirt in a shade of green close to the iconic khaki green colours that NSFs are so familiar with. The clothing in question is the Japanese apparel brand's crew neck tee, described as being "carefully crafted with a smooth texture", and made from "100 per cent cotton". "So Uniqlo is selling SAF admin shirts now?" Naufrage92 jokingly questioned. A quick search on Uniqlo's website confirmed that the crew neck short-sleeved T-shirt in a shade called "56 olive" bears an uncanny resemblance to the SAF's admin T-shirt, sans the SAF logo. Interestingly, the garment falls under the women's catalogue. Retailing for $14.90, it is available in sizes ranging from XS to 3XL and it also boasts an impressive a 4.9-star rating averaged from 7,740 reviews. So Uniqlo is selling SAF admin shirts now? byu/Naufrage92 insingapore The 'national uniform'? Netizens were quick to find humour in the item infiltrating mainstream fashion, with many of their jokes referencing the SAF. "Welcome to Uniqlo," a netizen cheekily wrote, mimicking the recognisable, friendly greeting by store employees, only to contrast this against the oft-heard army command: "Whole lot knock it down now!" Some also guessed that these shirts would be for "girlfriends" and even "grandmothers" — specifically, the "sergeants' grandmothers who always run faster than you", another netizen said in jest. Others speculated how this colour made it onto Uniqlo's catalogue, with one user jokingly suggesting that a marketing executive on the brand's team might have said: "Our research shows 90 per cent of Singaporean males aged 18 to 21 wear this colour every day! It will be a smash hit!" Another user also playfully enquired: "Can use e-mart credits at Uniqlo?" "Well, it is the national uniform," a Redditor also stated, referring to how Uniqlo had previously declared their popular Airism shirt collection as such in the past. [[nid:718315]] khooyihang@

Built-in bra tops are summer's must-have and we've tried high street buys

Supportive, stylish and secretly structured, we've found the very best built-in bra tops on the high street, and tried out best-selling styles from Uniqlo and Primark When the sun's out and the layers come off, the last thing anyone wants to deal with is an uncomfortable bra or exposed straps, which is exactly why built-in bra tops are having a major moment this summer. Whether you're after easy everyday comfort or subtle support that doesn't ruin the look of your outfit, these clever tops are the ultimate warm-weather staple. Uniqlo was one of the first high street brands to launch these handy tops all the way back in 2008, but it was a couple of years ago that they really started to go viral. And ever since, more and more brands are offering the practical design feature. From Uniqlo's cult-favourite Airism shelf bras to surprisingly supportive finds at Primark and Bravissimo, the high street is full of options. UNIQLO Since launching, Uniqlo's collection of bra tops has expanded so much, even into dresses. From camis to halternecks and of course, the viral AIRism tops, there are so many options to choose from. I tested out a few last week, and found my winners in the Open Back Halter Neck Bra Top, priced at £19.90 and the AIRism Sleeveless Bra Top, priced at £19.90. I especially love that the halter neck top has a lower back, which usually would restrict bra use, but instead supports the chest while allowing your back to be on also have built-in bra dresses to choose from, which is a real game-changer. From cute AIRism tennis dresses to flattering striped maxis, these picks are the perfect summer wardrobe addition. PRIMARK Primark's built-in bra tops have been cropping up a lot on Instagram and TikTok, and are easily the most affordable option available. There aren't as many styles or colours available as there are with Uniqlo's ones, however, for the price they are a great basic to have in your summer wardrobe. The Built-in Bra Cami Top is priced at £8 and comes in four different colourways, including a trendy powder blue and a ditsy floral print. Again, if you wanted to wear a bra with such a thinly strapped camisole like this one, you would just have to accept your bra straps showing through. However, with the built-in bra, you can get actual support while wearing the clothes that you want to. Shop in your local Primark BRAVISSIMO If you've got a fuller chest, Bravissimo is the place to shop for supportive bras, bikini's and bra-tops. Designed specifically to help bigger busts, their bra tops have a built-in wired and padded bra, complete with a hidden hook-and-eye fastening for extra support. And they've been specially designed to keep you feeling secure and comfortable, as well as being made from high quality and super-soft fabric that feels great against the skin SHOP BRA TOPS: Bandeau Vest Top With Built-In Bra, priced at £49, and Non Padded Strappy Top With Built-In Bra, priced at £46. SKIMS Ok, so not necessarily a high street brand (although they have just announced a physical Skims store is coming to the UK), but talking about underwear and shapewear without including Skims is pretty hard. And their bra tops have shopper reviews to back them of their tops don't explicitly have 'built-in bra' in the name like some other brands, but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Many of their styles, including their tube tops, feature a built-in shelf bra, so you can still wear traditionally unsupportive styles such as camis and bandeaus without worrying about what to wear underneath.

Uniqlo's 'summer staple' £24.90 dress is 'flattering' and 'comfy'

Uniqlo customers are lavishing praise on a "beautiful" midi dress that's proving very popular online. The retailer, renowned for its trendy and wallet-friendly fashion, might just have unveiled a new summer must-have. The AIRism Cotton T-shirt Dress, retailing at £24.90, is offered in an array of hues including black, pink, light orange, natural, olive, and navy. It comes in sizes ranging from XXS to XL. This dress boasts 'AIRism' technology fabric with a cotton-like appearance, a "comfortable, relaxed cut", handy side pockets, and a ribbed crew neck. Uniqlo claims the longer sleeves and hem "add a touch of cool style in the one piece that completes your look." For those on the hunt for the perfect summer dress, H&M is offering the smocked strappy dress at a reduced price of £12.75, down from £14.99. New Look presents the Cream Floral Print Frill Sleeve Midi Dress for £37.99, while River Island features the chic £69 Khaki Short Sleeve Cutwork Midi Dress. The Uniqlo dress has garnered a stellar 4.7-star rating online. Amongst the glowing reviews, one customer remarked: "Perfect dress. This basic dress is so comfy and suitable for any occasion," reports the Mirror. Another commented: "Excellent as a lounge dress, very comfortable and good for warmer weather." A third shared: " Light and flowy. Thinner than the traditional cotton t-shirts. Very light and very comfortable to wear." However, one customer claimed the colour of their dress was different upon arrival. They stated: "I bought the dress in pink, but it is nothing like in the pictures. It is actually brown, a lot darker. I like the dress otherwise, but the colour is just ugly." The majority of the reviews were positive, with one shopper writing: "Beautiful dress. This fits perfectly-I'm a size medium, and it hugs just right. I absolutely love the material; it's incredibly soft and flexible thanks to the cotton and elastic blend. Super comfortable and flattering. I definitely recommend it!" Another added: "Summer staple. I already have some items in the Airism material, so I was keen to try the T-shirt dress. It is a lovely, flattering fit on the top and flares out nicely. I'm petite so it is a maxi length on me and I think it will be great for work or casual wear too. The Airism material hangs so well and it's great for those warmer days. Very happy with this purchase and also bought it in black." Others claimed the sizing was off with the product, writing: "I am 5'2" and after filling in my weight, height, age, preferred fit, etc. , I went for the size you recommend for me - XL - and I was completely swamped...I am sorry about the fit of the dress because it should have been easy to wear and suitable for many occasions, instead it is going back and I shall ignore your "recommended size" in future." Despite this, some shoppers said they'd be wearing it no matter the season. One shopper said: " Beautiful shape! I am so impressed with the quality and price of this product. I bought it in the gorgeous olive green colour.
