Vi's subscriber loss widens in April, Jio leads in gains

Mumbai: Vodafone Idea (Vi) lost 600,000 users on an overall basis-and 1.1 million active users-in April, belying expectations that India's third-largest telecom operator will be able to arrest heavy subscriber churn after its launch of 5G services. Vi's subscriber losses continue to widen on a monthly basis even as it expands 4G and 5G coverage to major markets across the country. In March, Vi lost 500,000 subscribers, adding to its 200,000 loss in February. Vi has been continuously losing subscribers to bigger rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel . Data issued by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Thursday showed Jio led overall additions last month, gaining 2.6 million users, outpacing Airtel's 200,000 users. For Airtel, user addition in April was muted compared to 1.3 million, 1.6 million, and 1.7 million in March, February and January, respectively. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Pare a neuropatia: descubra como NeuroFit Undo Jio reinforced its dominance in the 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) segment with an 81.9% market share, adding 570,000 users in April. Mukesh Ambani beats Sunil Mittal as Jio races ahead of Airtel in..., it crosses...

Bad news for customers of Jio, Airtel and Vodafone as Mukesh Ambani, Sunil Mittal plan to... Good news for Mukesh Ambani as Reliance Jio led the charts with the highest number of new subscribers. Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced the subscriber figures for April. As per the list, the state-run BSNL experienced a decrease in its mobile subscriber numbers. In April, Reliance Jio, led by Mukesh Ambani, continued its strong subscriber momentum in April 2025, adding 2.6 million new subscribers and a robust 5.5 million active users, according to the latest telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). The telecom giant further cemented its dominance in the 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) segment, holding an 81.9 per cent market share. The telecom industry overall added 1.9 million subscribers in April, maintaining positive momentum following SIM consolidation in the wake of the July 2024 tariff hike. Between July and November 2024, the sector had lost 21.9 million subscribers due to consolidation, particularly in the lower Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) segment. Jio's subscriber additions improved from 2.2 million in March and 1.8 million in February to 2.6 million in April. The operator's active subscriber base also surged by 5.5 million, a sharp uptick from 5.0 million in March and only marginal gains in the two months before that. Consequently, Jio's Visitor Location Register (VLR) ratio–a key indicator of active users–rose to 96.6% in April, up from 96.0 per cent in Airtel's subscriber growth slowed as per the data shows. The company added just 0.2 million new users in April, compared to 1.3 million in March. The company saw 4.1 million decline in its active subscriber base, a reversal from gains in the previous three months. However, Bharti retained the highest VLR ratio at 98.9 per cent. The third major player in the space, Vodafone Idea (VIL) continued to struggle, losing 0.6 million subscribers in April, along with a 1.1 million drop in active users. The telecom also saw a significant decline of 0.8 million in mobile broadband subscribers. Its VLR ratio stood at 85.1 per cent. BSNL lost 0.2 million overall subscribers and 1.8 million active subscribers in April, with the lowest VLR ratio at 61.4 per cent. Jio added 0.57 million new 5G FWA subscribers in April, up from 0.33 million in March, driven by aggressive expansion of its JioAirFiber service, now available in over 5,900 towns and cities across India. The company maintained a commanding 81.9% share in the 5G FWA market. Bharti Airtel added 0.16 million subscribers in the same segment, maintaining its 18.1 per cent share. In the Machine-to-Machine (M2M) segment, Bharti continued to lead with a 53.3 per cent market share, followed by Vodafone Idea at 23.6 per cent. Jio's market share remained largely steady at 18.2 per cent in April, compared to 18.3 per cent in March. TRAI noted that Mobile Broadband (MBB) and Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) subscriber data for Jio and Bharti from December 2024 onward remains unavailable, and April figures are based on the last reported data from November 2024.

Airtel and Fundamental vs. Financial Fraud

HighlightsIn 2024, Airtel became India's first Spam Fighting Network by utilizing artificial intelligence to screen spam calls and texts in real time, analyzing over 250 parameters. Airtel's new initiative, The Safe Network, aims to combat financial fraud by recognizing and blocking malicious links across various digital platforms, ensuring that fraudulent links do not open for users. The campaign promoting this service, directed by Ram Madhvani, emphasizes Airtel's commitment to customer safety with the reassuring message 'Kuch Nahi Hoga', indicating that Airtel is protecting its customers. In 2024 telco giant Airtel became India's first Spam Fighting Network. Leveraging both, the scale of their network and the power of AI, the company started screening spam calls and texts in real time, analysing over 250 parameters to identify these nuisances and sending consumers an Airtel Warning whenever they received such calls or messages. But the battle against what is arguably the biggest cyber-menace facing people today was far from won. Scams are rampant, ever-evolving and claiming new victims every day. Being a brand that has its ears to the ground, Airtel realised through numerous customer interactions that the problem wasn't restricted to calls and texts alone. Links emerged as a serious cause for concern - because they are omnipresent on the internet and often the first step to getting scammed. Partnering with indie agency Fundamental, Airtel has responded with a solution to this wide-spread issue. Enter: The Safe Network . Using AI, Airtel will now be able to recognise and block malicious links . Which means that even if unsuspecting people are now pressurised or duped into clicking on them, fraudulent links just won't open. The objective is to come down hard on financial fraud and minimise it to the extent possible, by rendering such links 'unclickable'. Airtel will be able to identify suspicious links regardless of which platform they are served to consumers on - chat apps, social media, search engines, email - links on any or all of these channels will be flagged by the system and blocked. And once again, this service is available to every Airtel customer without the hassle of a separate app download or additional fees. The brand has gone live with its latest campaign to announce the launch of this service. The spots have been directed by Ram Madhvani of Equinox Films. Speaking about working with Airtel towards this solution, Pallavi Chakravarti, founder and chief creative officer at Fundamental said, 'Most consumers are plagued with the worry that despite being vigilant they may slip up and click on something malicious - what happens then? with the simple but reassuring ' Kuch Nahi Hoga ' we're sending out an emphatic message: Airtel has your back.' Nigeria: Telecoms subscribers decline by 43mln in one year —Report

AT least 43 million lines were disconnected from network service providers for non-compliance with the National Identification Number (NIN) SIM linkage policy of the Federal Government, report has revealed. The number of telecom subscribers in the country fell by 43.7 million subscribers from 216,974,742 in April 2024 to 172,948,309. This effectively reduced teledensity from 100.09 per cent to 79.78 per cent. Teledensity is calculated based on Nigerian Population Commission's projected population figure of 216 million, according to the NCC. A breakdown showed that Airtel subscribers dropped from 62,933,351 in April 2024 to 58,586,914 in April 2025. Globacom witnessed a drop from 62,055,248 in April 2024 to 20,607,726 in April 2025. The number of customers lost by Globacom was 20,607,726, making it the biggest loser. 9Mobile subscribers dropped to 2,964,445 in April 2025 from 8,956,568 subscribers in April 2024. However, MTN Nigeria Communications was the only telecom company that survived the shock. MTN saw a rise in its subscribers from 82,716,236 in April 2025 to 90,508,170 in April 2025. Analysis showed that the 43.7 million subscribers' loss was a result of the disconnection of unregistered lines. 'The removal of Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) that are not linked to verifiable National Identification Numbers (NINs) and the rectification of a major discrepancy by a Mobile Network Operator explain the significant drop in Nigeria's telecoms subscriber base,' the regulator explained in the report. In 2022, the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy announced that the NIN-SIM linkage policy was for national security and accuracy of the national SIM ownership database. Subscribers whose lines were not associated with a verified NIN were advised to complete NIN verification to reactivate their lines. After multiple deadlines for compliance, the NCC set a final deadline of September 14, 2024, for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to complete the linkage process.
