49ers Could Face NFL Punishment Over Brandon Aiyuk Decision
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk is likely itching to get back on the field after suffering a season-ending injury in Week 7 last season, but he and the team may have broken an NFL rule as he works his way back from a torn ACL and MCL. Prior to San Francisco's 22-19 preseason win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Saturday, Aiyuk was seen catching passes from quarterback Brock Purdy. "Obviously he looks great physically, progressing in the right way with his knee," Purdy said, via the San Francisco Chronicle. "But more than anything, man, you can tell he wants to get back out there and compete, which I love." "If you were there early, you got to see Brandon Aiyuk running some routes," co-host Jennifer Lee Chan said. "Brock Purdy gave him a lot of compliments, he's saying he has a great mindset, and I think he's on his way for sure." "I don't know that that's allowed, to have a PUP player running routes and catching passes from the quarterback, whether it's at practice or in the game," Maiocco added. "So, maybe the 49ers will be hearing from the NFL on that one." Violations of this rule could result in "a fine on the involved club, fines or suspensions of involved individuals, as well as the possible forfeiture of draft choices by the involved club." Aiyuk could face a personal fine of $25,000 and the 49ers a fine of $75,000, according to the Sporting News. The 49ers are expected to be without Aiyuk for the first third of the season—head coach Kyle Shanahan recently told reporters the $120 million wide receiver likely won't return until Week 6 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers—leaving the team to rely on Jauan Jennings, Ricky Pearsall, and Jacob Cowing plus journeymen Russell Gage, Demarcus Robinson, and Robbie Chosen. 49ers finally have timeline for Brandon Aiyuk's return from major knee injury
The San Francisco 49ers finally have a timeline for wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk's return, although that timeline remains vague. Head coach Kyle Shanahan on Monday after the 49ers' practice told reporters in a press conference that Aiyuk could return by Week 6 of the regular season. He also noted it may be a little earlier or later depending on how things go in Aiyuk's recovery. Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and torn MCL in Week 7 last season against the Kansas City Chiefs and until Monday didn't have a timeline for return. He began training camp on the PUP list and in all likelihood will remain there through final cuts. If he's on PUP to start the regular season he'll need to miss at least four weeks. If Aiyuk is back for Week 6 he would step in on the road against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He would also be returning after a mini-bye because San Francisco visits the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday Night Football in Week 5. That extra time would give him a bonus practice as well leading up to Week 6 depending on when the 49ers activated him off the PUP list. The club would have three weeks to decide whether to put him on the active roster once his practice window is opened. It's unclear exactly how effective Aiyuk will be upon his return, but any help the 49ers can get in the receiving corps will be welcome. They've been banged up at the position throughout training camp and Aiyuk's talent atop the depth chart will be a lift even if he's not at 100 percent this article originally appeared on Niners Wire: Brandon Aiyuk injury update: Kyle Shanahan has good news on 49ers WR

Brandon Aiyuk injury update: 49ers WR expected back about Week 6
The Cardinals play the 49ers in Week 3. Brandon Aiyuk isn't expected to be back from his knee injury by then. The Arizona Cardinals will likely not have to face one of the better wide receivers in the NFC West in one of their two games with the San Francisco 49ers. Their first matchup with the San Francisco 49ers, on the road in Week 3, 49ers receiver Brandon Aiyuk is not expected to play. They do have somewhat of a timeline, though. Head coach Kyle Shanahan estimated that Aiyuk could return in Week 6. He is currently on the PUP list as he recovers from the serious knee injury he suffered in Week 7 last season, tearing both his ACL and MCL. That means the 49ers' top two receivers in Week 3 will be Jauan Jennings and second-year receiver Ricky Pearsall. The, of course, still have running back Christian McCaffrey and tight end George Kittle, but their passing attack will not be as potent without the dynamic threat that Aiyuk is. In 2023, his last healthy season, he had 75 receptions for 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns. In his last game against the Cardinals in Week 5 of 2024, he had eight receptions for 147 yards. 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk's Potential Return Date Revealed
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. It's been nearly 300 days since San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk last played a down of football. The 49ers desperately need the star wideout, who tore his ACL and MCL in a Week 7 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, back in the lineup after trading Pro Bowl WR Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders during the offseason. The rest of San Francisco's receiver corps is also banged up with Jauan Jennings battling a calf injury, Jacob Cowing a hamstring injury, and Equanimeous St. Brown placed on season-ending injured reserve with a foot injury. While Aiyuk seems to be on track with his recovery, head coach Kyle Shanahan updates reporters on Monday as to when they can expect to see the All-Pro WR back in the team's lineup. "49ers HC Kyle Shanahan estimated today to reporters that WR Brandon Aiyuk — who is recovering from a significant knee injury — could be back for Week 6," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported. More NFL: Browns Considering Surprise QB Move After Shedeur Sanders' Preseason Debut: Report Brandon Aiyuk #11 of the San Francisco 49ers catches a pass to score a touchdown during an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on December 3, 2023 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Brandon Aiyuk #11 of the San Francisco 49ers catches a pass to score a touchdown during an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on December 3, 2023 in Philadelphia, had just 25 catches on 47 targets for 374 yards last season (he had only one game with more than five receptions and 100 or more yards), and he was on track for just 60 receptions and 908 yards had he not gotten injured — a steep decrease from his previous two breakout years when he averaged 76 catches, 1,178 yards, and 7.5 touchdowns. Aiyuk is one of many 49ers offensive skill position players including Jennings, Cowing, St. Brown, plus running backs Isaac Guerendo, Ameer Abdullah and Jordan James, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk, to find himself on the team' injured list during camp. More NFL: ESPN Analyst Proposes Blockbuster Micah Parsons-Bills Trade With Aiyuk out, 2024 first-round pick Ricky Pearsall will likely step into his role at San Francisco's WR1, but another receiver to keep an eye on is Russell Gage, who's been a standout during training camp and caught Shanahan's eye. "He's definitely given himself a chance; I think Russ had a really good offseason," Shanahan said, via 49ers on SI. "We got him last year to put on our practice squad, and you could see him throughout the whole year working to get his legs back and to get back in receiver shape and be able to handle the cuts after his injuries. "I think the way he finished last year was really positive. He put the work in this offseason and I think he's back to being a really good NFL player now and fighting to make this team."
