UP Monsoon Session begins today, set to be stormy
The Monsoon Session of the Uttar Pradesh assembly, beginning on Monday, is expected to be stormy with the Opposition parties preparing to target the ruling BJP-led government over a range of public issues. The Monsoon Session of the Uttar Pradesh assembly is expected to begin on a stormy note on Monday. (File Photo) Leader of Opposition in the assembly and Samajwadi Party (SP) veteran Mata Prasad Pandey stated, 'We will raise issues such as the merger of schools, problems caused by floods and waterlogging, exploitation of farmers, fertiliser crisis, corruption in the administration, unemployment, rising prices of essential commodities, deteriorating law and order, irregular power supply and the decline in health services.' On Sunday, SP chief Akhilesh Yadav convened a meeting with his party MLAs at the state unit office to strategise for the session. Legislators were briefed on the key issues they are expected to raise in the House. Congress Legislature Party leader Aradhana Mishra 'Mona' said her party will draw the government's attention to key issues with the flood crisis being the foremost among them. 'Floods have made life miserable for people, and farmers are suffering as even their maize crops are being destroyed. I have demanded a central relief package for farmers during the all-party meeting held today,' she said. Mishra also highlighted the need for a debate on the school merger issue. 'On one hand, the government claims increased student enrolment, while on the other, it is shutting down schools. Law and order is another pressing issue, but meaningful discussion is difficult when the session is limited to just three-and- a-half days,' she added. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) Legislature Party leader Umashankar Singh said the BSP will raise concerns about flooding in several districts. 'We will highlight the plight of people stranded in marooned villages, demand compensation for farmers whose crops and homes have been destroyed, and question delays in rescue and relief operations in rural areas. The BSP will also call for an extension of the Monsoon session,' he said. Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh government is expected to table ordinances during the session. These were promulgated following the budget session and include: Uttar Pradesh Repeal Ordinance, 2025, Uttar Pradesh State Public Service Commission (Regulation of Procedure) (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, Uttar Pradesh Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, Uttar Pradesh Private Universities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025, Uttar Pradesh Private Universities (Second Amendment) Ordinance, 2025. The session will commence on August 11 and continue until August 16, according to principal secretary, UP assembly, Pradeep Dubey. No legislative business will be conducted on August 15 and 16 due to Independence Day and Krishna Janmashtami.

Act against officials over voter list discrepancies: Akhilesh to EC
After Lok Sabha leader of opposition Rahul Gandhi raised concerns over alleged fake voters and irregularities in electoral rolls, Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav has also questioned the role of administrative officials in elections. He has urged the Election Commission of India (ECI) to take stern action against district officials in Uttar Pradesh where discrepancies were reported during recent bypolls. Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav. (File Photo) The Kannauj MP, who was at a hotel in Gomti Nagar here to attend a private function on Sunday, said: 'The issue of fake voters is serious. The Election Commission and the government should have taken measures to prevent irregularities. The BJP is adept at manufacturing fake voters and deleting genuine ones, but they have run out of tricks, and that's why irregularities are being caught.' He alleged that the EC ignored complaints during the bypolls. 'If the DMs of these districts are terminated, no discrepancies will be seen in the voter list. Until the EC suspends or removes such officers, it won't be able to stop the forgery,' he said. Commenting on allegations that Bihar deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha possesses two EPIC numbers, Akhilesh said, 'If the deputy CM of Bihar has two voter IDs, a booth in UP was looted at the behest of the chief minister. Can anyone imagine that?' He also claimed that education department officers posted in Ayodhya assigned duties to others, and that in Meerapur and Kundarki, DMs and police chiefs actively prevented people from voting. 'We all saw the video of a police officer with a pistol warning a woman against leaving her house. Was the EC sleeping then? That's why we presented a white cloth to the EC,' he said. Akhilesh further stated he would request the EC and the government to prevent such officials from 'becoming criminals'. 'When officers become criminals, who will act against them?' he asked. On the monsoon session of the UP assembly, commencing Monday and featuring a special 24-hour sitting, Akhilesh said, 'Why call a session for even three days? They should finish it in three hours. I am against the 24-hour session. The government hasn't worked in the last nine years, but now they want to keep people awake for nothing. School mergers, floods, inflation, farmers' woes and injustice will be our main issues in the assembly session.'

Election Commission acting under BJP influence to ‘loot votes', Akhilesh Yadav in Etawah
Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday alleged that the Election Commission of India is working under the BJP's influence to 'loot votes'. Akhilesh Yadav talking to mediapersons in Etawah on Saturday. (HT PHOTO) Speaking to reporters at his late uncle Rajpal Yadav's residence in Etawah, Akhilesh claimed that 'the biggest theft' occurred in Faizabad, along with Ayodhya, Kundarki and other constituencies. 'They (the BJP) decide who gets to vote and who does not. The SP has videos of individuals casting up to six votes each. We expected the Election Commission to deliver justice, but it did not,' he said, urging party workers and the public to stay vigilant. When asked about Rahul Gandhi's similar allegations, he said doubts over the EC's fairness have existed for a long time, pointing to 'vote abduction' during bypolls in Uttar Pradesh as an example. Responding to chief minister Yogi Adityanath's claim that crime has decreased since 2017, Akhilesh said he is requesting a list of the 'top 10 criminals' from each district, arguing that such data will reveal the true state of law and order. Commenting on US President Donald Trump's tariff measures against India, Akhilesh said the move offers Indians an opportunity to revive domestic industry. 'The BJP is an enemy of industry. Had it trusted the country's farmers and entrepreneurs, India's situation would be different,' he said, adding that 'Make in India' was merely a slogan 'meant for someone else'.
