Kuwait U-19 team heads to Slovenia for World Championship preparations

KUWAIT CITY, May 31: The Kuwait under-19 handball team will begin a 21-day training camp in Slovenia on July 14 as part of their preparations for the 11th IHF Men's Youth World Championship, scheduled to take place from August 6 to 17 in Cairo, Egypt. The tournament will feature 32 teams divided into eight groups. Kuwait has been drawn into Group A alongside Sweden, Portugal, and Austria. Faisal Saywan, Director of National Handball Teams, confirmed the team's preparation schedule, stating: "The youth team will begin local training at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Sports Complex in early July, followed by the overseas camp in Europe." Meanwhile, Al-Qadsiya and Al-Nasr have officially secured promotion to the 2025–2026 Premier Handball League. Al-Qadsiya clinched the First Division League title this season, while Al-Nasr finished as runner-up. According to league regulations, the top two teams from the First Division are promoted to the Premier League, which will feature eight teams next season. Next season's First Division is expected to include six or seven clubs, depending on which teams confirm participation. Al-Jahra and Al-Shabab are reportedly considering a return to the league after a three-year hiatus, while Solidarity is rumored to be planning a withdrawal from the General League.

Iraq's November elections: Al-Abadi Alliance hints at potential postponement

Shafaq News/ On Thursday, the Victory Alliance (Al-Nasr), led by former Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, projected that political developments may lead to a shift in the November 11 parliamentary election date. Speaking to Shafaq News, alliance spokesperson Salam al-Zubaidi noted that the date had been officially announced by the government and endorsed by the Shiite Coordination Framework (CF). However, he cautioned that 'surprises' remain possible, pointing to the potential return of Muqtada al-Sadr's Patriotic Shiite Movement (Sadrist) and the conditions it could set, such as the early resignation of key executive officials. Although the timeline is currently supported by most political forces—the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) and the government—al-Zubaidi stressed that no arrangement is 'entirely fixed.' He explained that if parliament reconvenes and efforts to revise the Electoral Law resurface, a postponement would become highly likely.

Al-Salmiya looks to extend dominance over Al-Nasr in Amir Cup quarterfinal

KUWAIT CITY, May 25: The quarterfinal stage of the Amir Cup wraps up this evening with two exciting matchups. Al-Salmiya will take on Al-Nasr at 7:15 pm at Sabah Al-Salem Stadium, while Al-Arabi faces Al-Jahra at 8:15 pm at Thamer Stadium. Al-Salmiya enters tonight's clash looking to revive its season after a disappointing campaign that saw it fall short in the Crown Prince Cup and settle for fourth place in the Zain Premier League. Its path to the quarterfinals was far from easy, edging past Al-Sahel 3-2 in the preliminary round. Despite holding two league victories over Al-Nasr this season—winning 3-1 and 2-1—Al-Salmiya is approaching the cup match with caution. The unpredictability of knockout football was evident in the previous round, where top-tier sides Al-Qadsiya and Al-Arabi struggled to dispatch First Division opponents. Al-Qadsiya narrowly defeated Burgan 3-2, while Al-Arabi needed penalties to overcome Al-Sulaibikhat after a 2-2 draw. Al-Nasr, for its part, is determined to reach the semi-finals and make a strong impression in the tournament. Having battled to remain in the Premier League, finishing second in the relegation group, the team knows tonight's match demands both grit and quality. In the second quarterfinal, Al-Arabi hopes to move past its shaky performance against Al-Sulaibikhat and claim a convincing win to keep its title hopes alive. The Greens are chasing the only remaining domestic trophy after narrowly missing out on the league title and falling to Kuwait Club in the Crown Prince Cup final. Al-Arabi's players are aware that success tonight will require full focus and effort as they aim to cap a competitive season on a high note. Meanwhile, Al-Jahra has emerged as a surprise contender. After eliminating Kazma with a 4-2 victory in the preliminary round, they now aim to extend their strong form. Fresh from topping the First Division and earning promotion to the Premier League, the "Sons of the Red Palace" are hungry for more success. Coach Mohammed Dahilis will be counting on his players to deliver a standout performance as they face one of Kuwait's football heavyweights.

Sulaibikhat advances to Federation Cup semifinals

KUWAIT CITY, May 21: Sulaibikhat basketball team booked their place in the semi-finals of the 2024-2025 Federation Cup after defeating Al-Nasr 121-101 in a high-scoring preliminary round match held at the Federation Hall in the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Complex in Sabah Al-Salem. Sulaibikhat will now await the winner of the upcoming quarter-final clash between Al-Arabi and Al-Qadisiya, scheduled for tomorrow (Friday). In another preliminary round matchup, Al-Arabi cruised past Al-Tadamon with a 107-89 victory. The standout performer of the game was Ibrahim Al-Shammari, who delivered a stellar performance with 45 points and 11 rebounds. Back to the Sulaibikhat vs. Al-Nasr showdown—featuring the league's fifth- and sixth-placed teams—the "Reds" (Sulaibikhat) dominated throughout, capitalizing on the absence of Al-Nasr's Macedonian head coach Jordanko Davidbakov, who was replaced by local coach Salem Al-Daoud. Sulaibikhat set the tone early, jumping to a 32-19 lead in the first quarter and maintaining a 58-48 advantage by halftime. The absence of Al-Nasr's American center, Ibrahima Thomas, was especially evident in the second half, as Sulaibikhat controlled the paint and extended their lead to 85-72 at the end of the third quarter. In the final period, they pulled away further, closing out the game with a commanding 20-point margin.
