Ronaldo special keeps Al-Nassr's SPL title hopes alive
RIYADH: Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Al-Nassr to a 2-1 win over Al-Riyadh on Saturday to move his team to within a point of second-placed Al-Hilal in the Saudi Pro League and eight behind leaders Al-Ittihad. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Those two goals from the megastar, 22 and 23 in the league season so far, not only keep the 40-year-old on top of the scoring standings but, more importantly, mean that the Yellows are, just, in the race for the title with seven games to go. It was looking very different at the end of the first half however, as Al-Nassr fell a goal behind just before the break. Faiz Selemani made the breakthrough, reacting quickly to score a rebound after Nassr goalkeeper Bento had parried a long-range shot from Abdullah Al-Khaibari into his path. While the home fans were stunned, a certain five-time Ballon d'Or winner sprung into action four minutes before the hour. Sadio Mane, on the left byline, sent a pass across the edge of the six-yard box for the former Real Madrid and Manchester United legend to score from close range. Four minutes after then hour, Ronaldo produced a spectacular winner. A clearance looped up to the Portuguese star on the edge of the area and he then smashed an unstoppable volley into the top corner for what will surely be one of the goals of the season. There was still time for Ronaldo and Jhon Duran to go close to sealing the win and Ibrahim Bayesh almost claimed a point for Riyadh before the woodwork intervened. A late red card for Ahmed Asiri ended the visitors' quest for a point however. Al-Nassr also moved five points clear of the two teams in fourth and fifth. Al-Ahli won on Friday while Al-Qadsiah's hopes of a top three finish were dented with a 2-1 defeat at Al-Fayha. The hosts took the lead just after the half-hour through Renzo Lopez but the visitors, who would have moved to within three points of Al-Hilal with a win, dominated most of the possession and chances but just could not find the back of the net. Their misery was complete as Lopez added a second just before the hour, which meant that a 93rd minute goal from Julian Quinones was just a consolation.

Ittihad's late show maintains title challenge
Al-Ittihad left it very late to defeat Al-Riyadh 2-1 on Thursday to move seven points clear at the top of the Saudi Pro League and stay on course for a 10th title. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport For a long time in Jeddah, it looked like being a frustrating evening for the hosts who had two goals disallowed. In the end, however, the Tigers took a step toward a second league title since 2009. Al-Hilal can, however, reduce the lead to four points if they win their game in hand on Saturday against Al-Taawoun. After just seven minutes, Karim Benzema had the ball in the net after an effort from Steven Bergwijn had bounced back into play but it was ruled that the Dutchman had been offside. Al-Ittihad continued to push forward but the home fans had to wait until 10 minutes after the restart to see the deadlock finally broken thanks to Moussa Diaby. The former Aston Villa winger broke free down the wing, outpaced the visiting defense, and then shot home from the right side of the area. With 12 minutes remaining, Benzema thought he had sealed the win for the Jeddah giants but, once more, the Frenchman's effort was ruled out for offside. The former Real Madrid star was left to regret that as Al-Riyadh equalized through a spectacular effort from Ibrahim Bayesh, with nine minutes remaining. The Iraqi international picked up possession inside his own half, ran to the edge of the penalty area and then fired home into the top corner for what could be a goal of the season contender. Despite that beauty, it looked grim for Ittihad but then, 10 minutes into added time, the leaders grabbed a dramatic victory after a handball in the area. Saleh Al-Shehri kept his nerve to score from the penalty spot after 12 minutes of added time. While there is still a long way to go, the goal means that Al-Ittihad stay in the driving seat leaving Hilal much to do.

Bassogog stuns Al-Ittihad with last-minute equalizer as Al-Okhdood snatches a dramatic draw
Saudi Gazette report JEDDAH — Cameroonian forward Christian Bassogog shattered the celebrations of thousands of Al-Ittihad fans at King Abdullah Sports City Stadium in Jeddah, netting a dramatic last-minute equalizer to secure a 1-1 draw for Al-Okhdood in their Saudi Pro League Round 23 clash. Al-Ittihad seemed poised for victory after Hassam Aouar's goal in the 39th minute gave them a crucial lead, setting them on course to extend their advantage over second-placed Al-Hilal in the title race. However, in the seventh minute of stoppage time, Bassogog struck with a thunderous strike following a corner, silencing the home crowd and denying Al-Ittihad a crucial win. With the draw, Al-Ittihad remains atop the league standings with 57 points, holding a six-point lead over Al-Hilal. Meanwhile, Al-Okhdood stays in the relegation zone, sitting in 17th place with 17 points. Al-Okhdood started the match strongly, testing Al-Ittihad's defense before the hosts gradually gained control. Karim Benzema missed a golden opportunity in the 37th minute before Aouar finally broke the deadlock with a precise low finish from the left side of the box. Al-Okhdood responded in the dying moments of the first half with a header from Naif Asiri that rattled the crossbar. The second half saw both teams exchange possession, with Al-Ittihad missing several chances to double their lead. As the match entered stoppage time, Al-Okhdood earned a late corner, which led to Bassogog's stunning long-range strike, leaving the home supporters in disbelief. In another late drama-filled clash, Al-Qadsiah edged Al-Riyadh 1-0 with a stoppage-time goal from Abdulaziz Al-Othman. The hosts took full advantage of their numerical superiority after Al-Riyadh's striker Mohamed Konate was sent off in the 63rd minute. Al-Qadsiah now sits third in the league table with 50 points, while Al-Riyadh remains in ninth place with 30 points. Meanwhile, Al-Ettifaq salvaged a last-minute draw against Al-Raed, thanks to a 99th-minute equalizer from Abdullah Al-Khateeb. The hosts had taken the lead in the 64th minute through Mathias Normann but failed to hold on in the closing moments. Al-Ettifaq now stands in seventh place with 32 points, while Al-Raed remains 16th with 18 points.

Al-Hilal slip up again following draw with Al-Riyadh
RIYADH: Al-Hilal drew 1-1 with Al-Riyadh on Friday to slump to a second successive draw and lose ground on Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League. For the latest updates, follow us @ArabNewsSport Just six days after drawing 2-2 with Damac, the champions could not find a way to victory and they could fall four points behind Al-Ittihad if the Tigers win on Saturday. It could have been worse as Al-Hilal could have been more than one goal down at the break. Mohamed Konate hit the back of the net after 24 minutes. Sekou Lega swung over a beautiful cross from the left and Konate rose high in the area to head past Yassine Bounou. The effort, however, was ruled out for offside. Konate did net in first-half added time, though, to give the visitors the lead. He ran onto a long ball, chested the ball down on the edge of the penalty area, and then lifted his shot into the back of the net with the classiest of finishes. Al-Hilal's players trudged off at the break with manager Jorge Jesus looking less than impressed. The second half proved better for the hosts but Al-Riyadh had the ball in the net again just before the hour. This time it was Lega who finished smartly in the area but, once more, VAR intervened and it was no goal. Just moments later, Al-Hilal were level with the sweetest of strikes. Marcos Leonardo's defense-splitting pass found Salem Al-Dawsari arriving from the left and the winger took one touch inside the area and then slipped the ball past the goalkeeper with ease. There was more pressure from the home team but they could not quite find the all-important winning goal. Chances were missed but the home team seemed to have been given a route to victory when Abdulelah Al-Khaibari was ruled to have handled in the box. Referee Ivan Barton pointed to the spot but his decision was reversed following a VAR review. That was that and Al-Hilal's mini-slump continued.
