Al Hamriyah 'Sharjah Summer': Nurturing agricultural engineers

Raising environmental awareness The programme, held at Al Hamriyah Club, is an inspiring educational initiative aimed at instilling environmental awareness and promoting sustainable agricultural practices among young people. The programme targets participants of all ages participating in the summer programme, seeking to equip them with the basic knowledge and skills that will enable them to take their first steps into the world of agricultural engineering. The programme is delivered through practical and interactive workshops that familiarise them with agricultural concepts and introduce them to the basics of home gardening and the production of organic fertiliser using scientific and simplified methods. Instilling sustainable development concepts The programme represents a model for integrating institutional efforts to instill concepts of sustainable development among children and young people, strengthening their relationship with nature and the environment, and transforming them into active partners in protecting its resources. This reinforces Al Hamriyah Municipality's vision of supporting purposeful environmental and educational initiatives. These unique initiatives are expected to continue within the "Sharjah Summer" events in Al Hamriyah, opening new horizons for participants and reinforcing their values of giving and belonging, in an environment that blends knowledge with experience, and fun with responsibility. Professional input The programme was implemented after Al Hamriyah Municipality adopted a comprehensive participation plan, relying on national professionals working across the municipality's various departments and divisions, in joint cooperation with Al Hamriyah Club. The goal is to launch targeted initiatives that empower children and young people to build innovative approaches in a learning and entertainment environment that combines fun and benefit, and instills new skills in the younger generation. The programme was presented by a specialised team from the Agriculture and Gardens Department at Al Hamriyah Municipality that supervised a comprehensive agricultural workshop that addressed basic agricultural concepts, such as the importance of the agricultural environment, seedling types, planting times, irrigation methods, and plant care. Participants also learned about local trees such as ghaf and almond trees, as well as varieties of ornamental plants, in a real-life experience that transported them to the world of plants and their intricate details. Practice A key focus of the workshop was a real-life practical experience in making organic fertiliser using recycled household waste. Participants learned the steps to convert this waste into natural, chemical-free fertiliser, with a detailed explanation of its components and benefits, and its significant role in improving soil structure, nourishing plant roots, and supporting their growth in a healthy and safe environment. Specialists also reviewed the principles farmers should follow when choosing the appropriate soil, the appropriate agricultural season, and how to care for seedlings until they mature, including regulating irrigation, periodic fertilisation, and protection from pests. During the workshop, participants were encouraged to utilise empty home spaces to grow plants and develop a sense of aesthetics by preserving green spaces.
