Eid Al Adha getaway: UAE expats say Jebel Jais' 10°C cooler air, views are 'perfect reset'
As the long Eid Al Adha weekend approaches, many UAE residents are looking for quick getaways to escape the summer heat. For those not planning international travel, Jebel Jais, the UAE's highest peak in Ras Al Khaimah, is proving to be a top pick among residents. About 10 degrees cooler than those in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, the temperatures at Jebel Jais hover between 23°C and 30°C, the mountain offers a refreshing break from the city's heat. The cool breeze, winding roads, and peaceful views are drawing residents looking for a quiet and scenic escape. Unplanned trips Shadab Mannar, a digital marketing executive living in Al Nahda, visited Jebel Jais last weekend with a friend. 'We were just driving along Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road and decided to take a short trip last Sunday. We didn't really plan anything; we just felt like getting away,' he said. 'The city felt too hot and crowded, so we got in the car and ended up at Jebel Jais.' He added that the drive became more enjoyable as they climbed higher into the mountains. 'Honestly, the weather was so pleasant, especially as we went up. It didn't even feel like we were in Middle East summer. We stayed till after sunset, around 9.30 pm, just sitting there enjoying the calm. It was so peaceful and cool.' Shadab now plans to have a short trip with his cousins and friends during the Eid break. 'After that experience, we already decided to drive up again during the long weekend. It's just perfect,' he said. Similarly, Maria Fernandes, a PR executive in Dubai, also found herself at Jebel Jais earlier this week in an unplanned trip with her cousins visiting from Abu Dhabi. 'After lunch, we stepped out just to get some ice cream. One of our friends had to drive to Ras Al Khaimah for some work, so we tagged along,' she said. 'After his work, we were all thinking about what to do next, so we drove up the mountain.' Maria said the change in scenery and temperature was immediate. 'As soon as we hit the mountain road, the air felt cooler and lighter. We had brought sandwiches and tea in a flask, so we stopped at a viewpoint and had a little picnic.' 'It wasn't just the weather, it was the silence, the views, and the break we didn't know we needed. It felt like the perfect reset before starting the workweek again,' she said. 'Away from the malls' Zubair Ahmed, a father of three living in Abu Dhabi, is planning to take his family to Jebel Jais during the upcoming Eid break. 'We will be traveling to Dubai for lunch at my brother's place on Eid Al Adha and then head straight to Jebel Jais in the evening,' he said. 'We usually end up going to the mall or some indoor activity because of the heat. But this time, I wanted to do something different.' He added that several of his friends recently went to the mountain and had only good things to say. 'They told me it's much cooler there in the evenings. The kids are excited about the road trip, and I am just looking forward to spending some time outdoors with them, no screens, no noise, just fresh air and mountains.'

Seeb crowned champions
MUSCAT: Seeb Club sealed their dominance in the 2024–25 Omantel Professional League (OPL) by clinching the title with a match to spare, following a gritty 1-0 victory over 10-man Al Rustaq on Saturday night at the Al Rustaq Sports Complex. Coached by Serbia's Nikola Djurovic, the win handed Seeb their fourth top-flight domestic crown and confirmed their status as Oman's premier football force this season. The decisive moment for Seeb came in the 35th minute when Liberian striker Abu Kamara rose highest to head home from a corner, sealing all three points for the Muscat-based club. Al Rustaq's hopes were dented further when goalkeeper Islam Al Hinai was sent off just before halftime. Despite a spirited effort with ten men, Rustaq could not find an equaliser. The victory pushed Seeb six points clear of nearest rivals Al Nahda with just one round remaining, rendering the final day of action academic in the title race. Seeb will now host Al Nasr at the Seeb Sports Stadium on May 8 in what promises to be a celebratory home fixture capped with the official title presentation in front of their fans. A season of character and class Seeb's championship campaign was defined by consistency and resilience. The Yellow and Green Brigade racked up 16 wins from 21 matches, with just three defeats and two draws. Two of those losses came in back-to-back games last month against Sohar and Oman Club, raising alarm bells among their supporters. However, the team bounced back in emphatic fashion to retain the title. The league triumph was especially sweet for Seeb after the heartbreak of losing the His Majesty's Cup final to Al Shabab in February. That setback became a rallying point, with the team regrouping to mount an unshakable title charge. Saturday's triumph marks Seeb's fourth Omantel League title, adding to previous wins in 2019–20, 2021–22, and 2023–24. With four crowns, Seeb are now on par with Al Nahda, Al Arouba, and Al Suwaiq in terms of title count, still trailing traditional powerhouses Dhofar (12 titles) and Fanja (9). Battle for top-four While Seeb and Al Nahda (44 points) have locked up first and second place respectively, Oman Club (39) are secure in third. The battle for the fourth spot remains fierce between Al Shabab and Al Khabourah (28 points each), Al Nasr (27), Saham (26), and Bahla (25). At the other end of the table, Sur's 3-3 draw against Al Shabab sealed their relegation on Saturday, as they sit bottom with 18 points and no mathematical route to safety. Elsewhere on Saturday, Al Khabourah defeated Al Nasr 2-1. Amir Alaa and Zakaria Al Qartubi struck in quick succession in the second half to secure a vital win for Al Khabourah. Marwan Taib pulled one back from the spot, but Al Nasr's search for an equaliser fell short. Also, goals from Baba Tunde (penalty) and Marwan Al Ghafri gave Saham a well-deserved 2-0 victory over Sohar. And in a thriller that sealed their fate, Sur failed to hold on to a lead despite goals from Mana Sbeit, Mohammed Al Najashi, and Abdullah Al Mashaikhi. A hat-trick from Al Shabab's Mohammed Al Ghafri denied Sur the win, ensuring their relegation. A goalless draw ensured Al Nahda's second-place finish and kept Bahla in contention for a top-five finish.

Their early pressure paid off with three well-deserved goals: Ahmed al Matrooshi opened the scoring in the 10th minute, Abdulaziz al Shammasi added the second in the 15th minute and Winda netted the third in the 39th minute. In contrast, Sohar tried to match Al Nahda's pace by playing through the flanks, but their passes lacked precision, making it easy for Al Nahda's defence to intercept and close down spaces. Four minutes of injury time were added, but the score remained unchanged, with Al Nahda leading 3-0 at half-time. In the second half, Al Nahda continued to dominate the match amid a clear decline in Sohar's performance, who struggled to keep up with the pace. Al Nahda took advantage of this and continued their goal fest, with Winda scoring the fourth goal in the 55th minute. Near the end of the match, Mohammed al Ghafri further boosted Al Nahda's lead by scoring two quick goals in the 89th and 93rd minutes, sealing an emphatic victory. With this win, Al Nahda raised their total to 43 points, maintaining their hold on second place in the league standings, while Sohar remained stuck at 21 points in ninth place. Al Khabourah attempted to equalise through varied attacking plays, but Al Rustaq's defence held firm until the final whistle. With this victory, Al Rustaq climbed to seventh place with 23 points, while Al Khabourah remained at 25 points in fifth place.
