Tom Aldred signs one-year contract extension with Mohun Bagan Super Giant
New Delhi [India], May 12 (ANI): Mohun Bagan Super Giant centre-back Tom Aldred has signed a fresh one-year contract with the Mariners, the Indian Super League (ISL) club announced on Saturday. The new deal will see the defender don the Green and Maroons till the end of the 2025-26 season, as per the ISL official website. Aldred, who joined the Mariners from A-League outfit Brisbane Roar ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, quickly became a fan favourite. The 34-year-old played a crucial role in the heart of defence during a memorable season for the Kolkata-based side. Under the leadership of head coach Jose Molina, MBSG retained the ISL Shield and clinched the ISL Cup with a victory over Bengaluru FC in the final, becoming only the second team in ISL history to achieve the double. The Mariners also finished as runners-up in the Durand Cup. Aldred made 32 appearances across all competitions and, aside from his defensive solidity, also contributed in attack, mostly from set-piece situations, with three goals and one assist. With his future now secured, the experienced defender will aim to build on this strong season and lead from the back once again in 2025-26. Earlier, Mohun Bagan Super Giant last featured in the Kalinga Super Cup 2025, where FC Goa put them to the sword, beating them 3-1 to progress to the final of the competition. Goals from Brison Fernandes (20'), Iker Guarrotxena (51' penalty), and Borja Herrera (58') sealed a comfortable victory for Manolo Marquez's side over Bastab Roy's young guns. (ANI)

Next generation of Cambridge archaeologists to train on hillfort
Archaeologists are to begin a five-year project to excavate the site of a nationally important Iron Age hillfort and analyse their finds. The first dig will take place on the protected ancient monument at Wandlebury Country Park, just south of Cambridge, from 28 April to 9 and staff from Cambridge University's archaeology department and the Cambridge Archaeological Unit will be taking Oscar Aldred, from the unit, said it was "a really exciting opportunity to train the next generation of archaeologists". An excavation by the Cambridge team at Wandlebury last year uncovered a later Bronze Age ditch, dating to between 1500 to 800BC, which was reused to support a wooden palisade during the Iron five-year project hopes to reveal more about the history and prehistory of the hillfort, which is protected as a scheduled and test pits will be dug into the ground, following last year's geophysical surveys - techniques that use the properties of the soil to map archaeology below the Aldred said: "Our particular focus this year is to prepare the ground to answer important archaeological questions by assessing the inside of the hillfort, how well-preserved it is, as well as begin to gain a better understanding of the possible hillfort entrance." Visitors to the country park, which is owned by the charity Cambridge Past, Present & Future, will be able to speak to the archaeologists as they estate manager, Allan Scott-Davies, said: "We run a popular Iron Age outdoor education programme for schools, so it would be great to share that knowledge with the children when they visit."A public archaeology open day will be held on 3 May. 'Really poor': Andrew Johns calls out 'terrible' act amid Kalyn Ponga masterclass
Andrew Johns was scathing in his criticism of the Dolphins' 'terrible' ill-discipline on Thursday night as Kalyn Ponga produced a scary display in Newcastle's 26-12 win. Ponga laid on three try-assists and had five tackle breaks, running for 202 metres from 22 carries. He was completely dominant in the first half before appearing to take more of a back seat in the second. In commentary for Channel 9, Knights legend Johns was blown away by what he was seeing. Johns was left salivating after Ponga set up the Knights' fourth try through Dane Gagai when the fullback produced a move that "only a couple of players in the world" could have conjured. Ponga beat Jake Avarillo with his footwork before he even caught the ball, moving to the outside of the Dolphins centre before setting up Gagai. Avarillo was left sprawled on the ground after failing to lay a hand on Ponga, whose performance in the first half was labelled "10 out of 10" by Queensland coach Billy Slater. If Ponga keeps producing more of the same, Slater will be hard-pressed keeping him out of the Maroons' No.1 jersey (currently occupied by Reece Walsh). And while Johns was mesmerised by Ponga, he was equally gobsmacked at how bad the Dolphins were. At one stage he labelled their disciple "terrible" after they turned over possession with a number of 'roll-balls'. The NRL are cracking down on players not making an attempt to use their foot to play the ball this year, and Jeremy Marshall-King was guilty on numerous occasions. "Once again the discipline, that's the second time tonight ... really poor," Johns said. "They all know, all off-season they have been told. They need to be better. I would make him (Marshall-King) get to training and do a thousand of them." Cameron Smith added: "All this is a training habit... unless you do train it, you will continue to give away cheap penalties like they have tonight." The Dolphins missed a whopping 39 tackles, made 10 errors and conceded five penalties. It was evident how rattled they've been by a disrupted start to the season, with Cyclone Aldred moving their Round 1 game from Brisbane to Sydney, meaning they had to leave their families behind during the scary situation. They were then forced to relocate to Newcastle earlier than expected when their training facilities weren't unusable due to flooding. Dolphins prop Felise Kaufusi said the side were keen to get back to Queensland, where they will play their next five games after the trials of a winless fortnight. "We've had a lot of adversity and hopefully that can make us stronger as a group going forward and we can get some points on the table," he said. Kalyn Ponga isn't even out of third gear here and he's absolutely torn the Dolphins to shreds. He's good. — CAPEL (@laurencecapel) March 13, 2025 Kalyn Ponga. That's it, that's the tweet. #NRLKnightsDolphins — Elinya Chenery (@elinyajchenery) March 13, 2025 If Nathan Cleary, Tom Trbojevic & Kalyn Ponga all play the same amount of games this year there is a genuine chance we get a 3 way tie for Dally M. 6 points to each of them every time they win a game. What a generation of footy we are in 🔥 — The SuperCoach Experience (@TheSCXperience) March 13, 2025 RELATED: Michael Maguire goes public with devastating family admission Legend demands explanation as Roosters on cusp of replacing May Ponga praised his team's display and the overcame distractions around Dylan Brown's signing. "Our focus was putting in a performance that Newcastle are proud of, and I definitely think we did that," Ponga said. "It's been a long time since I've had a full pre-season and it was definitely a focus for me. For many reasons I believe it sets up your season. I feel pretty good at the moment. As a spine, we do it collectively. For me, I just worry about being dangerous. Off the back of that, things happen."
