Denmark screening of Just A Farmer film opens conversation about mental health in rural communities

Denmark restaurant The Dam screened new film Just A Farmer on Monday night, with the evening presented by Black Dog Ride and aiming to open conversations about mental health and suicide in rural Australia. An Australian farmer takes their own life every 10 days. This was the eye-opening statistic presented to the gathered audience at the end of the film, as the room full of more than 100 people sat in sombre silence after watching the deeply moving film. Just A Farmer follows main character Allison and her young farming family in rural Victoria and their journey of grief and healing after she loses her husband Alec to suicide. Leila McDougall wrote, produced, and starred in the film, with she and her husband mortgaging their cattle farm in Victoria to finish the $2 million production. She attended the screening at The Dam and said growing up and living in farming communities opened her eyes to the devastating and growing impacts of the mental health crisis in rural Australia. 'It is still quite taboo in a farming community, but it's time we started having those conversations,' she said. 'Making a movie was my a way of subconsciously getting people to see what's going on in farming communities, and I honestly don't regret a single minute or dollar we spent doing it.' Raintree property owner Stephen Birkbeck gave the evening's opening address, and shone a light on the hardships WA farmers have faced in the past five years and beyond, how important it was to come together to support farmers and have conversations around mental health. 'Experts will give you insights into farmers' suicide, what worries me is that the rates have always been high but they have increased by 50 per cent in the last 10 years. 'I have never seen anything like the stress our farming community face today,' he said. 'We need an SOS to go out, farmers need help if you want us to keep growing your food. 'We need help and we need to be listened to. 'I conclude by asking for society to put a higher value on our farming community and its vulnerable souls.' Black Dog Ride director Bev Seeney said the film was a perfect opportunity to bring WA communities together to talk about mental health. 'I believe telling our stories gives us a sense of empowerment with our stories,' she said. 'If we keep quiet about our own experiences, nobody else knows that there is a way through. 'So many people come up and just start sharing, and for many of them it's the first time they have, and then we can encourage them to go and get support, it's a very powerful thing.' Get rid of dandelions on your lawn without damaging grass

An organic lawn care specialist has shared how to remove dandelions from your lawn with ease while keeping your grass healthy and vibrant. Weeds such as dandelions can be a real nuisance in spring, spreading rapidly and draining your lawn of vital nutrients, but thankfully, they're easy to eliminate. While it's strongly advised not to use harsh chemicals in your garden to safeguard local wildlife, homemade remedies like a white vinegar solution should also be avoided on your lawn as it will ruin your grass. However, Alec McClennan, an organic lawncare specialist from Good Nature, has revealed there are numerous gardening techniques to eradicate dandelions from your lawn whilst maintaining healthy and lush grass, reports the Mirror. ‌ How to banish dandelions without damaging your grass Choose the correct fertiliser ‌ Dandelion weeds tend to be particularly troublesome at this time of year, with the warmer weather providing the perfect conditions for all plants to flourish and spread. The most effective way to stop seeds from sprouting is by applying corn gluten meal to your lawn, which forms a barrier preventing new weeds from taking root, whilst nourishing your grass, reports the Express. Alec advises: "Use an organic fertiliser that feeds the soil and may help minimise new weed germination, like corn gluten meal. "It is an excellent slow-release natural fertiliser that contains about nine percent nitrogen as a protein. Furthermore, corn gluten meal has been proven to inhibit new seed germination to some extent. This means it will help prevent new seeds from developing into plants." Mow at a higher height to promote denser grass Raising the cutting height of your mower might just leave dandelions out in the cold, by letting tall grass shade out these unwelcome guests and curtail their seed sprouting. ‌ Alec advises that this tactic could also "keep your lawn greener" as it promotes a lusher root system, leading to a healthier patch of green and a more robust lawn overall. As a result, the grass will grow thicker and be better equipped to compete with weeds, ultimately causing dandelions to die off naturally. Alec adds: "Mowing high can help crowd out existing weeds provided that you have grass types that will stand up and fight. ‌ "If your grass lays over and won't stand up, mowing high won't help as much. You still don't want to scalp the lawn, but having the right grass types makes mowing high much easier." Use an organic weed killer For those keen on keeping things natural, an organic weapon may be your best bet against weeds. ‌ Whilst giving chemicals a miss, some naturally crafted concoctions can banish not only the unwanted flora but also deal with moss, algae, ground ivy, and lichens. Alec said: "Captain Jack's Lawnweed Brew is made from naturally occurring Iron (FeHEDTA) and is safe for people and pets. It will weaken and kill many broadleaf weeds like dandelions without harming the grass. Since it's naturally occurring, it's okay to seed the same day you apply it." Captain Jack's Lawnweed Brew is making waves for its iron-rich formula, not just vital for lush grass, but also a powerful weed adversary. The trick lies in iron blocking the weeds' energy production through their leaves, causing them to wither and die off. ‌ Make sure to mulch Gardeners swear by mulching - a technique where gardeners blanket the soil with organic matter to nourish plants - to keep those pesky weeds at bay. Spreading your garden with items like fallen leaves, bark, or straw works wonders in creating an organic barrier that prevents sunlight and moisture from reaching weed seeds. While you can mulch any time, autumn presents the golden window, thanks largely to the plentiful supply of leaves. ‌ Alec added his insight, saying : "You may have to wait a bit on this, but studies at Michigan State have shown a significant reduction in dandelions on grass that had leaves mulched into it during the [autumn]. "So this year, instead of raking your leaves to the curb, run over them with your lawn mower until they're all chopped up and leave them on your lawn."

Liam Gallagher shares truth behind Oasis' 'final plans' with 3-word statement

Liam Gallagher has answered fans on social media after they were left disappointed at band manager Alec McKinlay's apparent reveal that there will be no more new Oasis tunes Liam Gallagher has hit back at speculation regarding any future Oasis tunes in the way he knows best. The singer, 52, has refused to let other people talk for him - and that includes the iconic band's manager. Manager Alec McKinlay had opened up on what it was like working with Liam and his brother Noel as the pair get ready for an epic summer of reunion gigs. However, he had appeared to pour cold water on the idea of new material, much to the disappointment of fans. ‌ However, Liam has had his say, casting doubt over Alec's claims in brutal fashion. ‌ The singer took to X, formerly known as Twitter to contradict his manager's input. He boldly said any reveal would come from him or his brother only. His message came after one follower had claimed the dismissal by Alec didn't feel "very biblical". It led to Liam hitting back in typical fashion: "Neither do I and the only people that will be making any kind of decisions on the future of OASIS will be ME n RKID so let's just take it one day at a time." He reaffirmed his stance later on as he answered another fan. They had claimed there "must be a degree of truth" in Alec's words for him to say it. Liam bluntly labelled Alec the "accountant" for the band. Last week, fans were adamant they had figured out what the band's first song will be in their reunion tour. It came after a cryptic teaser post on Instagram ahead of the first concert on July 4. Although there has been no official announcement yet, sharp-eyed supporters think the recent share on the platform could be a hint to the opener. The band's official Instagram account shared a visual clue which showed what looked like to be a five-track setlist. ‌ In it, one notably swapped out for 'Songbird' from 2002, a crowd-pleaser among the Oasis faithful. The teaser post was captioned: "Less than two months to go. What's your dream opener?" A post to the r/Oasis subreddit later sparked fan theories as to what this puzzle signifies, sending them into overdrive. It showed the song list reading Supersonic, Rock and Roll Star, Bring it On Down, Champagne Supernova, and Songbird. However, Songbird had been penned beneath Better Man, which is visibly struck through. One user pondered: "What are all your thoughts on this? Seems odd, I'd never imagine they'd open with the last two? And why scratch out better man? Cryptic. Interested to hear what you make of it." Another fan thought it wasn't the start of their song list, however, suggesting: "This is 100% one of Noel's early setlist drafts from the Heathen Chemistry tour that they plucked out of some archive. It's not current. These are not clues about what will be on the setlist."
