Lions will target promotion push, says boss Neil
Alex Neil has set his sights on a sustained Millwall promotion challenge next season after agreeing a new deal at The Lions surged up the Championship table following Neil's arrival in December and finished in eighth place, missing out on the play-offs by just two the 44-year-old, who guided Norwich into the Premier League a decade ago and oversaw Sunderland's League One play-off success in 2022, believes Millwall can build on their momentum next season."We're not here just to make up the numbers and be a bit unfortunate," he told BBC London 94.9. "Our plan and hope is to take that next step and be a team that's going to compete to try and get out of this division."We're not going to do it by outspending our opponents, we're going to do it by gradually building and if you do it that way, it gives you a little bit more longevity."It's easy to find a bit of money to get there but, if the foundations are built on sand, it doesn't last particularly long."Irrespective of how next year goes, I think it's a really exciting time to be a Millwall fan – we've got so many good young players, so many assets on the horizon coming through."One of the Lions' best homegrown assets, midfielder Romain Esse, departed for Crystal Palace within weeks of Neil's arrival – but the squad regrouped to secure a sixth top-half finish in eight manager added: "The camaraderie, togetherness and drive and determination of the players was vital – and the supporters as well, in some of those away games where we really needed points."Certainly by the end of the season we started to create that at home as well, winning five on the bounce. You need to put the team first, even if at times it doesn't suit your own narrative."I felt that's what the players did for me, for each other, for the fans and that's a great starting platform."

Former SNP Health Secretary calls for John Swinney to resign after Hamilton by-election loss
Alex Neil said the current SNP leadership needs to be "replaced urgently". A former SNP Health Secretary has called for John Swinney to resign after the SNP's by-election loss. Alex Neil said the current SNP leadership needs to be "replaced urgently". Labour's Davy Russell won the Hamilton, Larkhall and Stonehouse by-election despite some polls suggesting they could finish third. First Minister Swinney had said that it was a "two-horse race" between the SNP and Reform. Neil posted on X shortly after the result was announced: "Poor by election result for the SNP despite having the best candidate. "It shows that the opinion polls appear wide of the mark. "Most importantly it shows the current SNP leadership needs to be replaced urgently." Neil served as Health Secretary between 2012 and 2014, later serving as Social Justice Secretary. He has been a critic of the SNP leadership since standing down as an MSP in 2021. Russell beat the Nationalists' Katy Loudon - who has now lost three elections since late 2023 - by 602 votes, with Reform's Ross Lambie another 869 behind. His surprise victory came after some bookies had put Labour at 11/1. The SNP had been expected to win, with some in the Labour ranks fearing they could fall into third behind Reform. Despite Labour winning two thirds of Scottish seats at last year's general election, the party has fallen back in the polls since then. This had led to the expectation that the SNP would win next year's Holyrood election. But last night's result was hailed by Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who said voters "have laid the first stone in the pathway to a Scottish Labour Government next year." He continued: "It's absolutely game on for next year. We've proven the pundits wrong, we've proven the pollsters wrong, we've proven the political commentators wrong, we've proven the bookies wrong." Russell took the seat vacated by the death of Scottish Government minister and SNP MSP Christina McKelvie.

New deal for Neil is fully deserved
The news that Alex Neil has signed a new contract with Millwall is a very welcome new deal is, of course, totally Neil arrived at John Berylson Way at the turn of the year, the Lions were looking over their shoulders, trying to fend off the drop his achievement in getting us so close to play-off football, especially with the injury list that we were carrying, AND to do it playing good, committed and attack-minded football was little short of has historically performed well under Scottish managers, and Lions fans have certainly warmed to Neil's honest and plain-speaking style.A big summer of squad development lies ahead, but today's cementing of the head coach position is a major step forward for the forthcoming 2025-26 of us can't wait for it to more from Nick Hart on Achtung!
