Marang new bridge project set for completion by January 2027

MARANG: The new Marang Bridge project across Sungai Marang, part of Federal Route 3 (FT003) linking Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan, is on track for completion by January 2027. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed the progress, stating the project has reached 54.7% completion as of June 30. The RM338 million project, managed by the Public Works Department (JKR), began construction on December 9, 2021. It includes a 2.5-kilometre stretch along FT003, featuring a 220-metre bridge over Sungai Marang and a 680-metre flyover bypassing Marang town. Existing roads will also be upgraded over a 1.5-kilometre span. Nanta addressed delays caused by land acquisition issues, now resolved, and assured no further extensions. 'The contractor and officials have confirmed no more EOTs (extensions of time),' he said during a site inspection. The new four-lane bridge will replace the outdated 1950s structure, notorious for congestion during peak seasons. Its higher clearance will allow fishing boats from Zone C to navigate upstream without obstruction, benefiting the local fisheries sector. 'Beyond easing traffic, this bridge will stimulate Marang's economy, particularly in fisheries and maritime logistics,' Nanta added. The project was prioritised under the 12th Malaysia Plan due to rising traffic demands. - Bernama

RM94 million flood damage recorded by Works Ministry in 2024

MARANG: The Works Ministry (KKR) has recorded RM94.17 million in damages caused by floods in 2024, primarily affecting road infrastructure. Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi confirmed that most repairs in flood-hit states, including Terengganu (RM22.13 million), Kelantan (RM20.38 million), and Perak (RM33.4 million), have been completed. 'This demonstrates the government's commitment to assisting areas impacted by the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) and recent floods. Necessary repairs have been carried out,' Nanta told reporters after inspecting the Marang bridge upgrading project. He added that the ministry is preparing for the upcoming MTL season, expected later this year. A Disaster Operations Room has been set up to monitor and respond to flood-related infrastructure complaints. 'This operations room operates year-round, but we will intensify efforts during the MTL period to ensure nationwide coverage,' Nanta explained. Meanwhile, Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat noted that nearly 90 per cent of flood-damaged roads in the state have been repaired by the federal government through KKR. 'Only one slope road in Bukit Besi, Dungun, remains pending repair, with the tender expected in two months. The rest are fully restored,' Hanafiah said, expressing gratitude to the federal government and Nanta for overseeing the restoration efforts. - Bernama

Nanta: Marang New Bridge Project To Be Ready In January 2027

MARANG, July 14 (Bernama) -- The new Marang Bridge project across the Sungai Marang, on the Federal Route 3 (FT003) from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan, here is expected to be completed by January 2027. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said this new bridge project, implemented by the Public Works Department (JKR), began on Dec 9, 2021, and its physical progress has reached 54.7 per cent as of June 30. 'This project received two 'extensions of time' (EOT) reportedly due to land acquisition issues, but these have been resolved. We have been assured by the contractor and officials that there will be no more EOTs," he told reporters after inspecting the progress of the new bridge construction project here today. He said the new bridge project, with a contract cost of RM338 million, involves a 2.5 kilometre (km)-long stretch along the FT003 route from Kuala Terengganu to Kuantan, including the construction of the 220 metres (m)-long Sungai Marang Bridge, and a 680 m long-flyover across Marang town, as well as upgrading the existing road over a distance of 1.5 km. The bridge, which has four two-way lanes, is expected to resolve the congestion problem on the existing bridge, especially during festive seasons. "This new bridge project is very important to replace the existing bridge built in the 1950s. The old bridge is not only narrow but also low, making it difficult for fishing boats to pass through," he said. He also said that when completed, the bridge will provide significant benefits to the people, especially local residents, who will be able to enjoy a larger and more efficient road, as well as alleviate traffic congestion during peak times and festivals, in addition to saving time. Additionally, it is said that the construction of the bridge is also designed to allow fishing boats from Zone C to navigate further upstream and no longer be obstructed by the height of the existing bridge. "With the construction of this new bridge, it will certainly stimulate local economic growth, especially in the fisheries and maritime logistics sectors for the Marang district," he added.

We have extended assistance, and whatever needed repairs have been fixed,' he told reporters after inspecting the new Marang bridge upgrading project today. He added that the ministry is also prepared for the upcoming MTL expected at the end of this year. Among the preparations in place is a Disaster Operations Room to receive information and respond to complaints about flood-related infrastructure damage. Meanwhile, Terengganu Infrastructure, Utilities and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Hanafiah Mat said nearly 90 per cent of roads in the state damaged by last year's floods have been repaired by the federal government through the ministry.
