Waka's huge confidence boost

Wakatipu's Anton Huisman on the way to the try-line to level the score with Alexandra in the 85th minute. PHOTO: SUPPLIED The Wakatipu Premiers rugby coach thinks his team's huge come-from-behind away win against Alexandra last weekend could be season-defining. Having lost to Maniototo and Upper Clutha, "the writing was on the wall", Jordan Manihera admits, when his team was 29-12 down after 51 minutes. However, they then scored three tries, the last to Anton Huisman, to draw level before co-captain Rube Peina's conversion sealed a 31-29 victory in the 85th minute. Cue the kind of celebration you'd expect if Waka had won the whole comp. Manihera: "When you have those players putting in the big moments to seal the deal from all the hard work the team has put it, it's just a massive relief, which obviously shows the raw emotion the boys had at the end of the game." He was delighted his players, 24-12 behind at halftime, "listened and adapted". "The resilience they showed was the biggest tick for us for the day." Wakatipu's Rube Peina is mobbed by overjoyed teammates after converting the try to win the game against Alexandra, 31-29. Highlights for him included a crucial scrum penalty won by first-year prop Spencer Wilkins, Bradley Cross' stint as an impact player, when he's normally a run-on player, and Peina's pressure-cooker conversion after he'd muffed an end-of-game penalty in Waka's surprise semifinal loss to Alex last season. Manihera says after their home loss to Upper Clutha, "one of our big learnings was, how do we actually adapt to having pressure as a privilege rather than making us go into our shells?" He adds: "To be the only team Alexandra have lost to this year, twice now, does send a message to the other teams that we can rise to any team we play." Meanwhile, he's delighted neighbour Arrowtown, who've only won once this season, came so close to top-of-the-table Upper Clutha last weekend, coming back from 17-0 at halftime to only lose 17-12. "To be that close to the top team, who are a good team, fair credit to them." The competition breaks this weekend for Topp Cup fixtures between Central Otago and South Otago in Alexandra this Saturday. The Central Otago development squad includes Arrowtown's Adam Jackson and Wakatipu's Will Burdon and Thomas Hulsman. Central's premiers squad includes Arrowtown's Ryan Egerton and Wakatipu's Tom Ria, Peina, Huisman, Conner Hamlin, Jamie Natapu and Phil Kingsbury.

Residents in Alexandra stop City Power's disconnection teams

Angry residents of River Park, Alexandra, were quick to react and immediately stopped an operation by City Power to cut illegal electricity connections in the area on Thursday. Commotion erupted as the community came together and stopped the officials from disconnection, demanding they turn the electricity back on and leave. Dillo Moche, 49, is frustrated that City Power randomly cuts off power after having agreed on a date with the community. Moche wanted the operation to start elsewhere, where people steal and do not pay for electricity, including informal settlements which have developed around River Park. 'Out of this entire ward, they chose to cut off the power in River Park only. Alexandra doesn't pay for electricity and there are informal settlements which surround River Park that do not pay at all but rather steal electricity, using cables.' Moche said the community did not mind paying but the problem of disconnection continued. 'We are willing to pay but they will still disconnect the electricity. We had agreed that City Power will come on 9 June and check for those who have bridged electricity so that they can fix the problem and be able to pay the R500 rate, but here they are now to disconnect without notifying us.' Tlaleng Mmoa, 48, who has been living in River Park ever since it was established, admits that there are some illegal connections and that other houses have bypassed meters.

Charles Leclerc and Alexandra Saint Mleux Relationship Timeline

It's not a secret that Formula 1 is full of some of the world's most eligible bachelors, I mean, have you seen Lewis Hamilton? But it's also a hub for some super adorable couples, like F1 driver Charles Leclerc and Alexandra Saint Mleux. Didn't realize your F1 crush was spoken for? Well, that might be because since Charles and Alexandra, an influencer and Rhode ambassador, were first spotted together in late 2023, they've mostly avoided attending public events as a couple and only walked a few red carpets together. They also rarely post about each other on social media, choosing instead to keep their romance private. Need to know more? Here's a breakdown of Charles Leclerc and Alexandra Saint Mleux's relationship timeline. Fans started suspecting that something was going on between Charles and Alexandra in early 2023, after the two were spotted together at Paris Fashion Week. At the time, Alexandra's social media was reportedly private and Charles didn't address the speculation until a few months later. Charles eventually put all the rumors to rest, confirming that he was dating someone in an interview in May of 2023. Though he didn't name Alexandra at the time, the two made their debut as a couple a few months later. The duo indulged in some light PDA while attending Day 8 of the 2023 Wimbledon Tennis Championships. The two sat next to fellow F1 driver Pierre Gasly and his girlfriend Francisca Gomes. Alexandra and Charles looked all loved up at the Lakers vs. Portland Trail Blazers in Los Angeles. Charles and Alexandra continued their relationship tour, appearing together at the Turkish Airlines EuroLeague basketball game between AS Moncao and Olympiacos Piraeus. They were snapped sitting on the sidelines enjoying the game. Again, not a hugely romantic outing, but also one very deliberately captured on camera. Cute alert! In April of 2024, Charles announced that he had adopted a puppy with an adorable Instagram post. The carousel of pics mostly featured 'baby Leo' living his best puppy life, but one shot in particular shows him attempting to chew what looks like a woman's hand. Could it be Alexandra? (All signs point to: yes.) Meanwhile, Alexandra posted a TikTok video of her snuggling up to her new fur baby. And she and their pup have been F1 regulars ever since. After watching Charles win the Monaco Grand Prix for the very first time, Alexandra joined her partner at the official Gala Dinner—a rare red carpet outing for the two. She also appears briefly in Charles' official YouTube vlog of the race. If this Instagram carousel is anything to go by, it looks like Alexandra and Charles celebrated the holidays together in Mexico last year. While she made sure to keep her boyfriend off her grid, you can see their sweet family photo (Leo included!) on the second slide. The duo arrived hand-in-hand at a screening of F1 The Movie in Monaco, showing the public that they're still going strong. Sadly, Leo was not invited.

Fascinating royal clutter: The Edwardians, at The King's Gallery, reviewed

The Royal Collection Trust has had a rummage in the attic and produced a fascinating show. Displayed in the palatial gallery adjacent to Buckingham Palace, and described on headsets in the reassuring tones of Hugh Bonneville, are public tokens and personal treasures of two generations: Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, and George V and Queen Mary. Frocks, clocks and diplomatic gifts; purchases and mementoes that give the illusion that the royal family might be, after all, not so unlike us. There's an unusual tea set, with odd, red photos: as princess, Alexandra took family snaps and had them printed on to these porcelain teacups in 1892, more than 100 years before Moonpig. It's all here, the strange presents one feels obliged to keep (a snuff bottle given by a Chinese diplomat, engraved with Queen Mary's face), the hardware one just had to have (Cartier pencil case in smoky quartz), the Meissen monkey orchestra that seemed so charming at the time. Alexandra was a watercolourist and photographer (see below) and her time as an invalid was spent creating lovely pictures. But the royal couple had a problem with a surfeit of stuff. The show's curators mention that the rooms of Sandringham were 'cluttered' – a photograph looks borderline hoarder. 'Off the Irish coast', c.1902, by Queen Alexandra. © ROYAL COLLECTION ENTERPRISES LIMITED 2025 | ROYAL COLLECTION TRUST We all have special posters that we put up at uni, trying to establish our taste; Edward VII had a Lord Leighton hottie he picked up in Rome, from the studio of the artist, and hung it in his rooms at Frewin Hall, Oxford, while he was an undergrad at Christ Church. It's also fun to see his fan-boy collectible from Sarah Bernhardt, a bronze copy of a bust of her as a dragon-winged chimera that she gave out to special admirers.
