Russia asks UN agency to help solve question of US fuel at Ukraine nuclear plant

Russia asked the U.N. nuclear watchdog on Friday to mediate between Moscow and Washington to resolve the question of what to do with U.S. nuclear fuel stored at a Ukrainian power plant controlled by Russian forces. Russia wants to restart the idled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, which lies near one of the front lines of the war in Ukraine and once generated a fifth of Ukraine's electricity. The fuel question is one of numerous issues standing in the way. Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, told Reuters this week that restarting it was currently impossible because of the lack of a stable power supply and water for cooling. Russian nuclear energy chief Alexei Likhachev said after meeting Grossi on Friday that Russia was willing either to use the fuel, supplied by U.S. company Westinghouse, or to remove it entirely and return it to the United States. Russia asks UN agency to help solve question of US fuel at Ukraine nuclear plant

MOSCOW, June 6 (Reuters) - Russia asked the U.N. nuclear watchdog on Friday to mediate between Moscow and Washington to resolve the question of what to do with U.S. nuclear fuel stored at a Ukrainian power plant controlled by Russian forces. Westinghouse and U.S. energy officials had previously raised intellectual property concerns with Russia in connection with the fuel issue, he said in televised comments. State news agency RIA quoted Grossi as saying the IAEA was willing to mediate. Russia and Ukraine have each accused the other of shelling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, Europe's largest, raising the risk of a grave accident. Likhachev said Russia had prepared a "comprehensive plan" for the phased commissioning of the plant but it could only be implemented if all military threats were removed. The facility was occupied by Russia in March 2022, shortly its troops entered Ukraine at the start of the war. It has six reactors, the last of which stopped generating electricity in September 2022.

Russia says it's ready to return or use US nuclear fuel at Zaporizhzhia plant in Ukraine

Russia is ready to use US-supplied nuclear fuel currently stored at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, or to fully remove it and return it to the US, a Russian nuclear official said on Friday. Alexei Likhachev, the head of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom, said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) might act as a mediator to resolve the issue. IAEA chief Rafael Grossi, in televised comments after meeting Likhachev, said the UN agency was ready to play a mediating role.

"Rosatom" Plans to Launch New-Generation Fast Neutron Reactor in 2030

Moscow - (Saba): Alexei Likhachev, CEO of the Russian state-owned nuclear corporation Rosatom, announced on Tuesday that the company plans to launch a unique, new, fourth-generation fast-neutron reactor in 2030. Likhachev said, according to Sputnik, "A unique project is the construction of a fourth-generation nuclear power plant in Seversk (Tomsk Oblast)... In 2030, we will launch a 300-megawatt fast nuclear reactor, the world's first fourth-generation power plant." Earlier, Likhachev said that Rosatom maintains Russia's "nuclear shield" at an appropriate level so that no one would consider using weapons against Russia. Likhachev indicated that the company is ready to cooperate with the United States on uranium supplies unless a different decision is made. "We will be present on the European market in one way or another, and we will cooperate with the United States in uranium supplies unless another decision is made," Likhachev said. Russia says situation at Zaporizhzhia plant under control but situation is complex

MOSCOW (Reuters) -The situation at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine remains under control, although it remains very complex after an attack by Ukrainian forces on power facilities, theRIA state news agency reported on Tuesday. RIA cited Alexei Likhachev, the head of Russia's state nuclear corporation Rosatom. Russia-installed officials in Zaporizhzhia said earlier on Tuesday that Ukrainian attacks had triggered power cuts over swathes of Russian-controlled territory in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions in Ukraine's south, leaving hundreds of thousands without power.
