'I regretted joining Man Utd from Arsenal – I wanted to rip up my contract and go back'

Alexis Sanchez possessed a hero status at Arsenal before his transfer to Manchester United, which the Chilean admitted he instantly regretted Alexis Sanchez admitted that he was prepared to rip up his Manchester United deal in order to return to Arsenal after just his first Red Devils training session. The Chilean spent three-and-a-half years in north London and accrued an impressive 80 goals and 44 assists in 160 games for the Gunners. ‌ Having established himself as one of the best players in the Premier League after a three-year stint at Barcelona, where he won everything but the Champions League, then-United boss Jose Mourinho came calling in 2018. ‌ In what was a rare transfer situation, United and Arsenal - who clash on Sunday in their first Premier League game of the season -opted to complete a swap deal, with Sanchez moving to Manchester, and Henrikh Mkhitaryan going in the opposite direction in January 2018. ‌ Prior to the move being completed, Sanchez had scored seven goals in 19 league games, a relatively slow start for the winger, given that he had netted 24 goals the season before. In a devastating drop-off in form, Sanchez scored just two more league goals for the rest of the season. He ended his first six months as a Red Devil with three goals in 18 games across all competitions. Speaking in 2020, Sanchez admitted he was initially positive about becoming a United player but those thoughts were swiftly dashed after just one training session. "I accepted the opportunity to go to United, it felt tempting, and it was something good for me," he said. "I liked this club a lot when I was a kid. Eventually, I signed, but I didn't ask for information on what was happening inside the club. Sometimes there are things that you don't realise until you get there, and I remember the first training session I had, I realised a lot of things. "After the session I got home and I told my family and my agent, 'Can you not rip up the contract to go back to Arsenal?' They laughed. I told them there was something that didn't sit right, it didn't seem good. But I had already signed; I was already there. After the first few months, I carried on having the same feeling. We weren't united as a team in that moment." ‌ Sanchez's sophomore season at United, which was also his last, was even worse than his debut campaign. He managed just one league goal in 20 games and was resigned to a bench role for much of the season. After being dropped for an away trip to West Ham because he failed to score in the first six league games of the season, Sanchez said Mourinho's decision to relegate him dented his confidence. ‌ "In a game with West Ham, I wasn't picked," Sanchez continued. "That had never happened to me as a player. It bothered me, and I said it couldn't be possible. "To go from being one of the best in the Premier League to not playing in five months. I came to my house, and I was very sad. The next day, I trained in a double shift because I love what I do." United chiefs called time on the failed experiment as Sanchez was sent out on loan to Inter Milan in 2019 before making the switch permanent a year later. He's since turned out for Marseille before returning to Inter in 2023 for just a season as he secured a return to fellow Serie A side Udinese, the first European club he played for after leaving his homeland. Was it a plane? Was it a UFO? Bright light over Quebec captivates stargazers

With eyes turned to the skies, stargazers taking in the Perseid meteor shower on Tuesday night witnessed something out of this world. In a publication on Facebook, the Astrolab du parc national du Mont-Mégantic (new window) in Quebec's Eastern Townships described it as a magnificent and luminous spiral streaking across the sky at around 10:40 p.m. Several people in the Montreal area also witnessed the strange phenomenon and reached out to CBC News describing a bright light enveloped by a fuzzy halo and warning of a UFO sighting. While it was certainly unusual, it wasn't really an unidentified flying object, but more likely the result of a rocket launch, according to the Astrolab. It was in all likelihood the second stage of an Ariane 6 rocket which was igniting its engine in order to de-orbit itself after having released the European satellite Metop-SGA1 in a polar orbit, the Facebook post explained. Astronomers may have discovered 3rd-known interstellar visitor (new window) The European Space Agency confirmed on its website that a weather satellite was launched Tuesday evening at 9:37 p.m. local time, from the European spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana — an overseas department of France located in South America. The new satellite is meant to usher in a new era of weather and climate monitoring from polar orbit. Enlarge image (new window) A bright spiraling light in the sky was confirmed to be part of a spacecraft. Most of the time rocket launches are on an equatorial orbit and so will be visible near the equator, he said. In a polar orbit, the rocket has to go around the earth circling each pole of the planet. So the the trajectory of that the rocket made it so that from our latitude it could be seen in Montreal or the south of Quebec, he said. But to witness the phenomena, other factors also need to align, according to Lamontagne, including the time of launch and the altitude reached by the rocket. From our point of view, we were in the dark, the sun was low below the horizon, but the rocket itself was so high that it was still lit by the by the sun, he said. And as the second stage of the rocket re-entered the earth's atmosphere, he said, it was spinning a little bit, there was exhaust gases coming out from it and that's what people saw in the sky. A spokesperson for the Canadian Space Agency told CBC News that many observers captured video of the event, with the agency confirming it was the ESA's Ariane 6 rocket. Jose Mourinho 'set to be reunited with former Man United flop at Fenerbahce', seven years after bringing him to Old Trafford

Fenerbahce are reportedly closing in on a deal for former Premier League star Alexis Sanchez in a move that could see him reunited with Jose Mourinho. Sanchez, 36, is best known to English fans for his time with Arsenal and Manchester United. The Chilean spent last season with Udinese after previously playing for the club between 2006 and 2011, but he battled with fitness issues and failed to contribute a goal or assist. And, according to Italian outlet Gazzetta, Sanchez's second spell with the Serie A outfit may be coming to an end. The report claims that Fenerbahce have offered Sanchez a one-year contract worth €4million (£3.5m). As part of the deal, there would be the automatic option of a second year for Sanchez if either of two criteria are reached. Sanchez spent last season with Udinese but reports in Italy claim he is likely to leave the club It is said that if the forward features in 70 per cent of the minutes Fenerbahce play next season or contributes a cumulative 15 goals or assists, that second year would be activated. The report goes on to add that while Udinese are not back in pre-season training until Thursday, all roads point towards Sanchez exiting the club this summer. If the 36-year-old was to complete a move to Fenerbahce, he would be reunited with Mourinho, the manager who signed him at United in 2018. At the time, big things were expected of Sanchez after he had scored 80 goals and added 44 assists in 166 games for Arsenal. Sanchez joined on a mega-money deal worth up to £600,000-a-week in wages and he was described as 'one of the best attacking players in the world' by Mourinho. However, Sanchez struggled to replicate his form at Old Trafford and netted just five times over one-and-a-half seasons until he joined Inter Milan, initially on loan. Speaking in 2019 after Sanchez had moved on, Mourinho, who himself was sacked in late 2018, gave an explanation for the forward's struggles. 'Sanchez… I felt him [to be] not a happy man,' Mourinho told The Telegraph. 'And I think in every job you have when you are not happy it is not so easy to perform at every level. And maybe I am wrong. 'Maybe it was me who was not capable to get into him and to get the best out of him.' Since exiting United for Inter, Sanchez has also represented Marseille before he enjoyed a second spell at the San Siro until he moved back to Udinese. Meanwhile, Mourinho's Fenerbahce side came second in the Turkish Super Lig for the fourth season in a row in 2024-25, meaning the Turkish giants haven't won a domestic title in 11 years. They are in the midst of a busy transfer window though, with former Premier League stars Edin Dzeko and Dusan Tadic having already left the club, while Sofyan Amrabat and Jhon Duran have arrived.

Chile loses at Bolivia and will miss third straight World Cup

Associated Press Chile will miss its third straight World Cup after losing 2-0 at Bolivia on Tuesday to remain last in South America's 10-team round-robin competition. Bolivia kept its hopes alive for an inter-continental playoff spot in a bid to reach the 2026 tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada. The top six teams in South American qualifying will secure direct berths in the World Cup. Defending champion Argentina has already qualified. Chile's golden generation won two Copa America titles — in 2015 and '16 — but is out of contention for next summer's expanded 48-team tournament. 'Sad, I am feeling bad. Never lived something like this. We have to ask people to forgive us,' veteran Chile striker Alexis Sanchez said after the match. 'We have to keep working. There's change already, the golden generation is buried, I am the only one left." Bolivia scored the first with Miguel Terceros in the fifth minute and added a second in the 90th with Enzo Monteiro at the 4,150-meter high El Alto Stadium, outside La Paz. The hosts now have 17 points to put pressure on Venezuela, which has 18 and will play later at Uruguay. Both are fighting for seventh place, which secures the inter-continental playoff spot. Sixth-place Colombia has 21 points. Ecuador can clinch its spot with a win later at Peru. Brazil and Paraguay, who will clash in Sao Paulo, can also book their tickets if they win and Venezuela loses in Montevideo. Also on Tuesday, Argentina hosts Colombia. Bolivia's future will be decided in September at Colombia and at home against Brazil. ___ AP soccer: recommended
