Capsey stars as Invincibles blow away winless Fire
The Hundred women's competition, The Oval Oval Invincibles 150-6 (100 balls): Capsey 55 (34); Matthews 2-18 Welsh Fire 111 (96 balls): Dunkley 56 (41); Smale 3-13 Invincibles won by 39 runs Scorecard. Table Alice Capsey whacked her second half-century in this year's edition of The Hundred as Oval Invincibles eased to a 40-run win over winless Welsh Fire. Capsey's 55 off 34 balls featured seven fours and one six as she provided the backbone of the Invincibles' imposing total of 150-6. It was the 21-year-old's second fifty in as many matches following a lean run which had seen her score just one half-century in her past 32 T20 or Hundred innings. Capsey has also struggled in England colours this summer with five single-figure scores in six T20 international innings, but this was another outing brimming with confident strokeplay. It was almost a shock when Capsey was out - the crowd stunned when she was dismissed caught and bowled by Shabnim Ismail, who bagged 2-31. Marizanne Kapp took over where Capsey left off and boosted the total with an unbeaten 47 off 32 balls while Hayley Matthews bowled tightly to collect 2-18. Set the highest chase in the women's tournament at The Oval - and the fourth highest overall - Fire lost the dangerous Matthews early on for 12. Sophia Dunkley carried the charge and looked well poised to make a fist of it with a knock of 56 off 41 balls. But when she chipped Sophia Smale into the hands of Phoebe Franklin at long-off with the score on 90-6 and 29 balls Fire's hopes were effectively extinguished. Capsey also impressed with the ball, finishing with 2-16, as Fire were bowled out for 111 with Smale the pick of the attack after she snaffled 3-13. Invincibles' win lifts them up a place to fourth spot, level on eight points with fifth-placed Manchester Originals, while Fire are bottom on zero. The Hundred - fixtures, results & reports Rockets win after Hose suffers serious ankle injury Corteen-Coleman takes four as Brave beat Rockets The Hundred women's competition, Trent Bridge Trent Rockets 106 (100 balls): Gordon 32 (27); Corteen-Coleman 4-13 Southern Brave 109-4 (98 balls): Bouchier 42 (30), Devine 41* (42); King 1-23 Brave won by six wickets Scorecard. Table Teenager Tilly Corteen-Coleman claimed 4-13 as Southern Brave moved top of The Hundred standings with a six-wicket victory over Trent Rockets. The 17-year-old left-arm spinner helped reduce the Rockets to 55-8 before Kirstie Gordon's battling 32 from 27 boosted their total to 106. Corteen-Coleman's victims included England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt as she finished with her best figures in her 12th match of the tournament. England seamer Lauren Bell was also in the wickets as she snared an impressive 3-16 from her 20 balls to extend her lead as the top wicket-taker in this year's competition. Brave had a bit of top-order wobble at the start of the chase at 10-2 when Danni Wyatt-Hodge and Laura Wolvaardt departed for four and one respectively. Maia Bouchier steadied the ship with 42 off 30 balls in a 69-run stand with Sophie Devine, only to be stumped after dancing down the pitch to Aussie all-rounder Alana King. Some tight bowling from Ash Gardner, Heather Graham and King ensured the game went down to the final set of five balls but Devine's unbeaten 41 ensured Brave got home with two balls to spare. Brave are now four points clear of second-placed Northern Superchargers at the top of the table on 16 points while the Rockets remain in sixth. What is happening on Sunday? The highlight of Sunday's action is the cross-Pennine derby between Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers. The women's game at Old Trafford begins at 11:00 BST and the men's 14:30. Alice Capsey hits overdue Hundred half-century as Invincibles clip Phoenix wings
Alice Capsey's first half-century in 10 innings in The Hundred lifted Oval Invincibles to their first victory of this season after they downed Birmingham Phoenix by 22 runs at Edgbaston. Former Australia captain Meg Lanning swiped 36 off 19 balls in a 76-run opening stand with Invincibles skipper Lauren Winfield-Hill (33), laying the foundations for Capsey to capitalise on the fine start. The 21-year-old has struggled for England in the past 12 months, but she has shone for Surrey recently and demonstrated flashes of her best form back on the biggest of stages in a sparkling 29-ball 52. Paige Scholfield added 25 not out off 16 deliveries as the Invincibles, who lost their first two games this year, posted 174 for five, their highest ever total and the third best in the event's history. Amanda-Jade Wellington, out for a golden duck, took centre stage in the reply, following up a juggling catch to dismiss Georgia Voll (22) with a no-look underarm back flick to run out Emma Lamb (25). In between the Australia's leg spin did for Marie Kelly and Ellyse Perry, who was looking dangerous on 29 before feathering behind, ultimately ending the Phoenix's charge as they settled for 152 for six.

The Hundred helps put England's Alice Capsey in a happy place for her birthday
England all-rounder Alice Capsey will celebrate her 21st birthday on Monday back in her happy place of The Hundred after a year of personal learnings. It was during the inaugural edition of the 100-ball competition in 2021 when Capsey was catapulted onto free-to-air TV screens as a teenager barely out of school that starred for eventual title-winners Oval Invincibles. Capsey largely enjoyed an upward trajectory for the next three years before she entered choppy waters in the second half of 2024 when a group-stage T20 World Cup exit was followed by her being dropped by England. Even though Capsey earned an instant recall, a chastening Ashes experience followed and the once new-kid-on-the-block has now played 71 times for her country, but is without an international half-century since July 2024. Nevertheless, Capsey has relished life under new England head coach Charlotte Edwards, started to score domestic runs more consistently and is keen to add another Hundred title to the Kia Oval trophy cabinet ahead of Saturday's fixture there against Manchester Originals. 'Yeah, I definitely feel a better cricketer. When you have such disappointments, it's a really good time to reflect and review and put in a lot of work behind the scenes,' Capsey told the PA news agency. 'Lots of highs, lots of lows, which I guess is part and parcel of being a professional cricketer. Lots of personal learnings and also whichever team I've played in, lots of learnings as a group as well. 'It's an exciting time because for me individually I know how much I've got to learn.' There are not many better placed than Edwards to guide Capsey through the trials and tribulations of international cricket ahead of another crunch 12-month period. Edwards made her England debut the day before her 18th birthday and went on to captain her country to two World Cup wins and three Ashes triumphs. Appointed England head coach in April ahead of this year 50-over World Cup and next summer's home T20 World Cup, Edwards watched her team dismantle West Indies comprehensively across six matches before losing to India in two white-ball series. Capsey added: 'Not only was she an incredible player but she's had so much success as a coach, so just to be able to work under someone like that, get new ideas and a new perspective has been really positive. 'It's been a summer where we have been challenged. That is what we've asked for in bilateral series, to be challenged so we learn how to perform under pressure when punches are being thrown our way. 'Hopefully that will put us in pretty good stead moving forward in ICC events and really important games.' The immediate focus for Capsey is commitments for Oval Invincibles after a fine summer of county cricket for Surrey with 579 runs and 11 wickets across 14 matches. 'A lot of cricketers you speak to, everyone pencils in The Hundred in their calendar pretty early on,' Capsey explained. 'It's definitely something I enjoy playing in and I definitely have a lot to thank for The Hundred with creating those opportunities for me and it's always a place I like to come back to, especially being at the Oval and having that as our home ground. 'There are worst places to play! It's a great time of the year and how much we enjoy it shows on the pitch and hopefully creates that energy for the fans.' KP Snacks, the Official Team Partner of The Hundred, are celebrating the installation of 100 new community cricket pitches across England and Wales.
