10 Winners and 4 Losers From San Diego Comic-Con 2025

San Diego Comic-Con 2025 is officially in the books, and it was a unique year, to say the least. Without Marvel or DC to anchor the pop culture excitement, the field was wide open for a number of smaller properties to steal the spotlight. Some took full advantage, building crazy buzz. Others did not. Here's our rundown of the winners and losers of Comic-Con 2025. The legendary sci-fi enemies took center stage at Comic-Con 2025 and brought major excitement to both franchises. Alien: Earth, the new FX show, screened an entire episode, which fans seemed to love, and had one of the biggest, most ambitious activations at the entire convention. Predator: Badlands, the upcoming theatrical release, confidently showed an unfinished first 15 minutes of the film, which were both incredibly awesome and hugely emotional. There was also a major activation and even a brand-new, canon-changing ending revealed for Predator: Killer of Killers that brings back the characters played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny Glover. Plus, there might be another crossover in the future? Fans of both franchises had a very good Comic-Con teasing an even more exciting future. After having his movie Coyote vs. Acme unceremoniously canceled by a certain corporation, the Road Runner-obsessed Coyote chose Comic-Con as the place to unveil the film in its new form. Now, the film has a release date, hilarious footage was shown, and audiences everywhere are poised to enjoy one animal's quest to take down the major corporation that has failed him at every turn. Longtime attendees of Comic-Con know something special is coming when a studio spends the money to utilize the giant screens that engulf Hall H to project content during its panel. This year, it happened with Project Hail Mary, the March 2026 film starring Ryan Gosling, based on the book by Andy Weir, and directed by Phil Lord and Chris Miller. The gang was all there (as well as writer Drew Goddard) to talk about the epic sci-fi adventure and screen almost 15 minutes of the movie. Fifteen minutes almost eight months out from release? That's a huge swing. And it worked. View this post on InstagramEvery company with a booth at Comic-Con wants to put something incredible on display. Something to bring in the fans and get them talking. This year, one booth did that to such a degree, it was almost unfair to everyone else. That booth was Lego, which centered around a massive model of San Diego Comic-Con itself. It had the Convention Center, the show floor, all the cosplayers, and more. It was built with over 200,000 bricks, took over 1,500 hours to design and build, and was populated by over 8,000 mini-figures. It was truly an unforgettable sight. George Lucas showing up to the last day of SDCC was not on our bingo cards before it was announced. So when the maker took the convention stage for the first time to a packed Hall H on a Sunday, it was like church. He got a full-on standing ovation, and it was so awesome to see him be surprised at the reaction. Along with Guillermo del Toro, Doug Chiang, and Queen Latifah, Lucas held court to introduce his Lucas Museum as a temple to enshrine the power of mythology. The discussion focused on the museum's intention to keep art accessible to the masses in a time where propaganda seeks to erase history, and the call to action was so incredibly moving. The panel felt like the crown jewel of this year's convention that really spoke to why we were all there, celebrating the pop culture we love and that inspires us. Though It: Welcome to Derry didn't get a full-on panel, it did get a hell of a showcase, with co-developers Andy and Barbara Muschietti taking the stage to share the opening scenes of the first episode. The footage exceeded our expectations for the Stephen King spin-off, promising a deeply disturbing (in all the best ways) series that'll further the creepy spirit of the movies, complete with stomach-turning special effects and everyone's favorite sewer-lurking clown. The fact that the Welcome to Derry showcase took place after 9 p.m. on Saturday night made us groan when we first spotted it on the SDCC schedule—but it actually made the moment feel more exclusive, and since it was held in a smaller room, more intimate too. James Gunn brought Peacemaker to the con for a fun panel that gave some insight as to how the former DCU show might cross over to the current DC Studios era. Star John Cena showed up dressed in his costume and discussed the character's inner crisis. Off-site, Peacemaker had a fantastic immersive activation, which held timed rock shows for fans. It was really neat to see clues about how the show will connect to Superman—and as you exited, Peacemaker came on screen to kick you out, with the words under him warning that the dimension was deteriorating. So we guess this is how James Gunn blows up the DCU, eh? He's a legend for getting that final dig in at SDCC. Remember that sad moment in history when cult-movie fans thought Macon Blair's Toxic Avenger reimagining might not actually get released? We're in a fully irradiated period of joy now, with the movie hitting theaters at the end of August and Toxie and company getting a splashy presence at San Diego Comic-Con. Fan screenings took place outside the convention itself, while the director and cast (including Peter Dinklage and Elijah Wood, as well as legendary Troma founder Lloyd Kaufman) took the stage at Hall H to spread the gospel of splatter. The Vampire Lestat may be a year away, but fans of the Anne Rice Immortal Universe were treated to a first look that rocked the con. Sam Reid embodies the rock star Lestat with sheer charisma and menace in the footage we saw. We also got to find out who else is joining the cast alongside Reid, Jacob Anderson, and Eric Bogosian—the name Delainey Hayles should ring a bell but it's not known if she'll be playing a ghost Claudia or someone else. As for the Queen of the Damned, Akasha? Showrunner Rolin Jones teases that an offer has been made to an actress but is still keeping us in the dark about just who it is. An indie horror movie that already hit theaters wouldn't usually get a splashy activation just to celebrate its upcoming streaming debut—but Clown in a Cornfield is a very fun movie, and it made sense that Shudder and AMC wanted to draw more attention to it. While there was no dedicated Clown panel, author Adam Cesare hit the convention to sign copies of his source-material novel, and just across the street from the convention center, fans could walk through an activation that brought the story to life, complete with a genuinely spooky haunted corn maze. Over the past 20 years, San Diego Comic-Con has been ground zero for the latest and greatest in comic book movie news. But, in 2025, it was basically deserted. Yes, two very cool films are currently in theaters (Superman and The Fantastic Four: First Steps) but outside of lots of cosplay for both, you wouldn't really know it. DC Studios president James Gunn was on hand for Peacemaker but didn't speak about his current film or any future films. And Marvel, after screening its big summer 2024 release Deadpool & Wolverine at the convention last year, all but ignored Fantastic Four. There was a booth, sure, but nowhere for anyone at the convention to see the movie (without driving 15 minutes out of the way). And yes, we know both studios are in an off time in terms of releases, with the next DC movie 11 months away and the next Marvel Studios movie 17 months away, but it would have been awesome to see or learn something. Anything. In your face, Acme! You tried to get the panel for Coyote vs. Acme shut down. You even tried to send in some of your high-priced lawyers to usher everyone off stage. But it didn't work. Footage was played, and excitement was piqued. Imagine being a company that wouldn't want to release a movie that looks so funny, smart, and appealing? Oh, Acme. This is a weird one because, on the surface, the Tron: Ares panel had it all. Big stars, incredible effects, and some really fun footage. There was even a booth on the floor with one of the most desired exclusives of the entire convention. But once the lights came on after the panel, fans had learned almost nothing about the movie. What's it about? Who are the characters? It was all very surface, which, after the previous, much more informative and heartfelt panel for Predator: Badlands, felt like a huge contrast. Plus, while the footage looked beautiful, it just seemed a little flat? We're holding out hope, especially with the sure-to-be incredible Nine Inch Nails soundtrack, but the panel left us wanting a bit too much. While it's exciting to know that there's fresh energy behind the Friday the 13th franchise, the Jason Universe panel was maybe one that could have been held until a later date. There just wasn't much to share beyond teases. Fans got a quick trailer for Sweet Revege, an upcoming short film featuring Jason's first cinematic appearance in this new era, as well as a very brief behind-the-scenes peek at Peacock series Crystal Lake, which is too early in its production to reveal much. Perhaps next SDCC, there'll be a sequel panel with more gory details to share? Want more io9 news? Nepo baby actress puts on brave face as she continues Alien: Earth press tour despite Variety cover scandal

Sydney Chandler put on a brave face amid her Variety cover scandal over the weekend to promote Alien: Earth at San Diego Comic-Con. The nepo baby daughter of actor Kyle Chandler appeared to be in good spirits as she did the rounds alongside her co-stars from the upcoming FX series. Chandler, 29, commanded attention in a sheer black skirt and cropped leather jacket as she posed for photos with Alien: Earth's leading man Timothy Olyphant. She seemed more than happy to speak to press at the convention, conducting interviews with MTV, IGN, The Hollywood Reporter and many more. Olyphant even went out of his way to praise the ingénue, calling her 'a joy to work with.' 'A professional, on time, always made interesting choices,' he gushed to On The Red Carpet. Chandler did her best to smooth things over following her debacle with Variety magazine last week. The rising star clashed with the publication over her refusal to film a Q&A game called 'How Well Do They Know Each Other?' with co-star Olyphant and showrunner Noah Hawley. The game is a Variety staple and has previously been played by Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, and many other A-listers. Chandler reportedly refused to play the game, claiming that she was a 'private person' and didn't feel comfortable with it. While she had her team offer up alternative ideas to Variety, such a breakdown of the Alien: Earth trailer, Variety's Editor-in-Chief Ramin Setoodeh refused to budge and pulled her from the cover shoot. However, both sides restarted negotiations and Chandler was once again set to shoot the cover alongside Olyphant and Hawley, only for the actress to pull out on the morning of the booking. This left Olyphant and Hawley to do the cover without Chandler, who is the lead star in Alien: Earth. Olyphant and Hawley also filmed the 'How Well Do They Know Each Other?' game together, without Chandler. Chandler made her acting debut with a supporting role in Olivia Wilde's controversial psychological thriller Don't Worry Darling back in 2022. That same year, she landed a coveted role playing rock legend Chrissie Hyde in FX's musical miniseries Pistol, which was based on the career of the Sex Pistols. Her famous father Kyle has been a Hollywood staple for years thanks to memorable roles in Argo, The Wolf of Wall Street, Netflix's Bloodline, the Godzilla franchise, and Friday Night Lights, which earned him an Emmy. The Variety scandal will most likely leave FX unimpressed given how much the network has put into Alien: Earth. While FX has declined to reveal the exact budget of the series, FX Entertainment president Gina Balian told Variety that it was 'bigger' than Shōgun, which cost $250 million. Alien: Earth is a prequel to the original 1979 film, which famously starred Sigourney Weaver as the iconic character Ripley. Chandler leads the series as Wendy, an android who has the body of a robot but the consciousness of a human. Her deep space research vessel crash lands on earth in the year 2120, where Wendy and a ragtag group of tactical soldiers must face 'mysterious life forms more terrifying than anyone could have ever imagined.' Alien: Earth premieres August 12 on FX and streams on Hulu and Hulu on Disney+.

Alien: Earth is one of my five must-see TV shows in August

August is, famously, when the summer movie season starts to draw to a close. Thankfully, TV doesn't have those same lull periods, meaning that there's plenty to look forward to on the small screen in the month of August. I'm particularly excited about Alien: Earth, which will be the first TV show in the Alien franchise and also the first thing in this universe to be set on Earth. Alien: Earth is far from the only thing to be excited about in August, though. Here are five shows I'm particularly looking forward to watching. Chief of War (August 1) This Apple TV+ original is another partnership between Jason Momoa and the studio. This time, Momoa plays a Hawaiian war chief tasked with uniting the tribes of the disparate islands so that they can face off with the colonizers who are threatening their way of life. Recommended Videos The show's cast is composed almost entirely of native Hawaiian actors, and it could be a fascinating look at a part of America that many Americans don't spend much time thinking about. Hopefully, it's a little bit better than See. Chief of War will be available on Apple TV+. Wednesday season 2, Part 1 (August 6) Wednesday was a phenomenon following its first season, and this follow-up is will try to recapture that same enthusiasm. The show, a twist on The Addams Family, primarily follows their daughter, Wednesday, as she is shipped off to boarding school and must make her way through regular teenage life. The show made a star out of Jenna Ortega, and season 2 promises to be even bigger and more star-studded than the first installment. Whether that means it will be better is anyone's guess. Wednesday will be available on Netflix. Alien: Earth (August 12) One of the great mysteries this summer is Alien: Earth, which brings the xenomorph to Earth for the very first time. Plus, the Alien franchise makes its debut on television. While it seems impossible to live up to the best of what this franchise can offer, Alien: Earth will follow a young woman who joins up with a group of tactical soldiers to investigate the crash of a space vessel onto Earth. What they find (which is probably an alien) is left a mystery, but Alien: Earth could expand on the world of the Alien movies in fascinating ways, even if it's not quite as good as that first movie. Alien: Earth will be available on Hulu. Peacemaker season 2 (August 21) Following the success of Supermanin theaters, interest in the new DCU has never been higher. Peacemaker season 2 may reveal more about where this universe is headed, but just as importantly, it will hopefully be an excellent continuation of the show's remarkable first season. The brilliance of John Cena's central performance is worth plenty of praise, but James Gunn managed to find exactly the right supporting cast to put around him. Here's hoping the lore of the DCU doesn't overwhelm a character that's at his best when he's ignoring the rules altogether. Peacemaker will be available on HBO Max. Eyes of Wakanda (August 27) While the DCU might emerge as a real threat to Marvel's supremacy, Eyes of Wakanda could be proof that Marvel still has a few cards left to play. This animated series seems like it will be largely disconnected from the rest of the MCU, as it tells the story of Wakandan warriors who travel around the world to recover vibranium artifacts. The animation looks beautiful, and Ryan Coogler's involvement is a good sign that this show will be a reflection of the Wakanda we've fallen in love with on the big screen. Eyes of Wakanda will be available on Disney+.

‘Alien: Earth' Crashes Into Comic-Con With a Massive Outdoor Experience

The USCSS Maginot, a Weyland Yutani research vessel, crashed into the large lawn next to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con this weekend. Onlookers remarked they hoped there was nothing dangerous on board, as containers had spilled all over the surrounding area. That's both the tease for a very cool activation put together by FX for its new show, Alien: Earth, as well as the setup for Alien: Earth itself. The show, which debuts August 12, centers on a crashed ship and all the horrors that it contains. One of them is a xenomorph, everyone's favorite killer alien with acid for blood. But the xeno isn't the only creature on the Maginot. At least on the show. At Comic-Con, it was the main one, but there were teases of others. io9 was lucky enough to walk through the Alien Earth activation during the daytime of the con, with the understanding this was just half the experience. You could also come back in the evening, and what was once light, bright, and open becomes dark, dim, and scary. It's a whole other, more terrifying experience. But even in the daylight, the amount of work and detail that's been put into this activation is impressive. You enter through an almost military installation surrounding the crashed ship. Containers with those classic Alien eggs are scattered about, as well as some new, odd, yellow eggs. You enter the MUTHUR computer room, just like out of the original film, and traverse two long hallways, both of which have been torn to pieces by… something. Finally, you enter a massive research facility, which offers a hint of just how many different species had been collected by the ship, only to, in the end, finally be greeted by the Xeno itself. Luckily, we survived. Here's a video of the experience. View this post on InstagramAnd here are a few photos. If you're at Comic-Con, the Alien: Earth exhibition is on the Hilton Bayfront Lawn and is open Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for the one experience and then 4:30 to 10 p.m. for the 'Code Red' evening experience. The daytime experience will also be open Sunday from 11 a.m. to a.m.-3 p.m. Alien: Earth is on FX August 12, and we'll have more soon. Want more io9 news?
