It's a special week, a unique event. Not everyone can enjoy this. I'm fortunate.' Liga MX's James Rodriguez also chose not to play in the game played in front of more than 20,000 fans at Q2 Stadium. Messi is currently tied with Nashville's Surridge for the MLS lead in goals with 18. Surridge scored another goal on Wednesday, from the middle of the box, heading in to the lower right corner a ball directed by LAFC's Denis Bouanga in the 28th minute. The opportunity developed after Bouanga had a point-blank attempt stopped by Liga MX goalkeeper Luis Malagon (Club America). Bouanga hustled to retrieve the long rebound and sent it to Surridge. Before the goal, both teams had attempts rejected with diving stops by Luis Malagon and Austin FC's Brad Stuver in the 13th and 18th minutes. MLS went ahead 2-0 in the 51st minute when Diego Rossi (Columbus) passed ahead to Baribo (Philadelphia), whose right footed shot from the center of the box made it to the lower left corner of the goal. Liga MX closed the gap to 2-1 just 13 minutes later when Gilberto Mora (Club Tijuana) converted a pass from Elias Montiel (Pachuca) from the middle of the box. 'We had moments when we played good soccer,' Liga MX coach Andre Jardine said. Liga MX's bid to tie the match was snubbed when a shot by Diber Cambindo (Necaxa) was stopped by Yohei Takaoka (Vancouver) in the 75th minute. White (Vancouver) finished the scoring in the 80th minute. Baribo ranks fourth in MLS with 14 goals and White has scored 11 as they chase Messi and Surridge. 'They are competitive,' Estevez said. 'One scores and the other says 'I have to score.' Brian in the end said 'I have to score.' MLS All-Stars crush Liga MX despite Lionel Messi absence

July 24 (UPI) -- Sam Surridge, Tai Baribo and Brian White each found the net to steer a dominant MLS victory over Liga MX in the 2025 MLS All-Star Game in Austin, Texas. Liga MX launched 21 shot attempts, but placed just seven on target in the 3-1 setback Wednesday at Q2 Stadium. The MLS All-Stars placed 7 of 13 attempts on target, including two second-half scores. "It was a special week," MLS All-Stars coach Nico Estevez told reporters. "I think I've been in the country enough to value what this event means. ... This is special. It's a unique event. "Not everyone can come enjoy this thing. I'm honored and fortunate to coach the MLS All-Stars." Philip Zinckernagel, Diego Rossi and Denis Bouanga logged assists for the MLS All-Stars, who played without Inter Miami's Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba. Elias Montiel assisted Gilberto Mora for Liga MX's lone score. "It was my first time in the All-Star Game," Baribo said on the Apple TV broadcast. "I scored and we won, MVP, it's the best feeling. Great night." The win helped the MLS All-Stars avenge a loss to Liga MX in the 2024 MLS All-Star Game. The MLS All-Stars won three of the four previous editions of their matchup with Liga MX. "What I told them is that we have quality when we have the ball if we can do combinations, being together, get the good relations and interactions that will help us to break the opponent," Estevez said. "When we had the ball, it was less instruction and more about being a unit and being compact." The Liga MX All-Stars threatened early on, but were often denied by Austin FC goalie Brad Stuver. Those heroics included a one-handed diving block in the 19th minute. But Liga MX goalie Luis Malagon also stood strong between the posts, keeping the game scoreless until the 28th minute. Denis Bouanga Sam Surridge There's a reason he's the top goalscorer in MLS. #MLSAllStar // @NashvilleSC Major League Soccer (@MLS) July 24, 2025 Bouanga started that sequence by leading a breakaway into the Liga MX box. He blasted a shot on net, but the attempt was denied by Malagon. Bouanga regained control on the left flank and fired a pass back toward the far post. Surridge -- who is tied with Messi with a league-leading 18 goals this season -- jumped into the area and headed a point-blank range shot past Malagon for first blood. Bouanga and Surridge each earned separate attempts about five minutes later. Bouanga drilled the right post with a volley, while star defender Sergio Ramos blocked Surridge's shot. The MLS All-Stars finally doubled their lead with Baribo beat goalie Kevin Mier in the 51st minute. Ross cut off several Liga MX defenders with a ball into the box for Baribo on that play. The Philadelphia Union striker let the ball roll onto his right foot and finished with a shot just inside the left post. Mora cut the deficit in half by beating Minnesota United goalie in the 65th minute, but White went on to add the clincher in the 80th. Carles Gil gained control in transition, weaved through defenders and found fellow midfielder Cristian Espinoza on the left flank to lead that attack. Espinoza proceed to tap a pass ahead for Zinckernagel, who spotted White about eight yards in front of the net. The All-Star striker finished with a one-touch shot off Liga MX All-Star Brian Rodriguez and into the net. The MLS regular-season slate will continue with six games Friday. Orlando City will host the Columbus Crew at 7:30 p.m. EDT in Columbus, Ohio. The New England Revolution will host CF Montreal at the same time in Foxborough, Mass. Messi and Alba, who were the leading vote getters for their positions, could be open to one-game suspensions for not playing in the MLS All-Star game. Their fifth-place Herons will host first-place FC Cincinnati at 7:15 p.m. Saturday in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

MLB trade deadline 2025: Rumors surround top trade targets. Will Yankees add bat?

Major League Baseball's July 31 trade deadline is just a week away and while the biggest swap of the season may have taken place in June, contenders will be posturing to land impact players for the stretch run. There won't be a bigger name than Rafael Devers dealt before the deadline, but a handful of All-Stars and even a Cy Young winner could be traded before the buzzer rings at 6 p.m. ET on the final day of July. Baseball's expanded postseason has blurred the definition of "contender," with only six teams more than 10 games out of a postseason spot and others waiting to see how they fare in the days to come before deciding what to do. Here's a look at some of the players whose names have been floated as trade candidates: Eugenio Suárez – Diamondbacks Arizona's slugging third baseman has 55 home runs and 137 RBIs in his last 161 games and is on pace to become the first player traded during a 50-homer season since Mark McGwire in 1996. The Yankees and Cubs have holes at third base and Suárez is an obvious fit, but would either team part with higher-tier prospects for a rental third baseman? Now locked in a battle with the Brewers atop the NL Central, Chicago has gotten nothing from the hot corner this year. The club's third basemen have combined for just three homers, 28 RBIs and a .562 OPS, all ranking worst in baseball. Keep an eye on Diamondbacks first baseman Josh Naylor, another big(ger) bat that could be on the market. Various Baltimore Orioles Following a maddeningly-inactive offseason, the Orioles' 2025 season couldn't be going much worse. But Baltimore has a slew of valuable trade chips who could yield some high-minors talent to reinforce Gunnar Henderson, Jackson Holliday and company. Need a starting pitcher? The Orioles could trade three – Charlie Morton, Zach Eflin and Tomoyuki Sugano. Before a clunker in his last outing, the 41-year-old Morton had turned his season around with a 2.76 ERA in eight starts after returning to the rotation. Want bullpen help? Baltimore should make veteran relievers Gregory Soto and Seranthony Dominguez available and may entertain offers for former All-Star closer Felix Bautista. Orioles outfielders Cedric Mullins (13 HR, 14 SB) and Ramon Laureano (.855 OPS in 233 AB) could also be impact additions. Sandy Alcantara – Marlins The 2022 NL Cy Young winner has had a rough go in his first season back from Tommy John surgery but has shown flashes of his old self, pitching seven innings (no earned runs) on July 23, perhaps his final home start for the Marlins. But Miami would be selling low on its longtime ace, and it would probably make more sense to wait until the offseason to consider offers for the 29-year-old right-hander who is under team control through 2027. Jhoan Duran and Griffin Jax – Twins The Twins right-handers are probably the top relievers whose names have surfaced in trade talks, but neither becomes a free agent until after the 2027 season, meaning a suitor would potentially be investing in 2½ years of service. Jax, 30, has a 4.09 ERA but is racking up 13.9 strikeouts per nine innings, while Duran, 27, has 15 saves with a 1.94 ERA. Minnesota has some tough calculus to do on whether or not to deal the foundational pieces of its bullpen right now. Ryan McMahon – Rockies An All-Star last season, the 30-year-old is getting hot at the right time (for his trade value) with three homers, seven RBIs and a 1.140 OPS in his past seven games. The Rockies would surely love to unload McMahon, but he's due $32 million over the next two seasons and they may need to eat a chunk of that salary to make a deal happen.

Royals place infielder/outfielder Nick Loftin on concussion IL, recall MJ Melendez

CHICAGO — The Kansas City Royals placed infielder/outfielder Nick Loftin on the seven-day concussion injured list and recalled outfielder MJ Melendez from Triple-A Omaha before Wednesday afternoon's series finale against the Cubs in Chicago. Royals shortstop Bobby Witt Jr. and Cubs right fielder Kyle Tucker both got the day off to rest sore right knees. The Royals and Cubs have Thursday off, giving the two All-Stars two days to recover. Witt and Tucker were available to pinch-hit Wednesday. Loftin was injured in fifth inning of Kansas City's 6-0 loss at Wrigley Field on Tuesday. He was struck in the head as he tagged out Pete Crow-Armstrong as Crow-Armstrong tried to reach third after lining an RBI double to right. Royals manager Matt Quatraro described Loftin's condition as a 'very mild concussion' that was detected after the game. Loftin is batting .216 with three homers and 13 RBIs in 37 games. The 26-year-old Melendez appeared in 16 games with Kansas City earlier this year after playing in 412 with the Royals over the previous three seasons. He made the opening day roster, but was assigned to Omaha on April 19 after batting .085 with one homer and one RBI. In 72 games with Omaha, Melendez had a .252 batting average with 13 homers and 43 RBIs. Witt apparently exacerbated his nagging knee soreness when he twisted out of the way of Matthew Boyd's inside pitch during a fourth-inning at-bat on Tuesday. Witt was Kansas City's designated hitter and remained in the game. Tucker fouled a pitch off his knee in the first inning on Tuesday. He stayed in the game, playing right field.
