Rahul Gandhi launches Congress revamp drive in Haryana after 11 years

CHANDIGARH: The faction-ridden Haryana Congress is all set to be revamped in a time-bound manner after more than 11 years, as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday held a meeting with senior party leaders from the state and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) and Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) observers. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, held a series of meetings with senior leaders under the party's 'Sangathan Srujan Abhiyan' - a campaign aimed at internal rejuvenation. The first meeting was with 17 senior leaders, including former chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda, party in-charge BK Hariprasad, Haryana Congress chief Udai Bhan, and MPs Kumari Selja, Deepender Singh Hooda, Randeep Singh Surjewala, Ajay Singh Yadav and Ashok Tanwar. The meeting was aimed at gathering feedback on the party's restructuring. Later, Gandhi met 22 district observers to chalk out a strategy for rebuilding the party machinery in the state. Both meetings lasted for about two-and-a-half hours. Senior Congress leaders gave suggestions on the reorganisation of the party unit and measures to strengthen the District Congress Committees (DCCs) and the overall Congress presence in Haryana. Speaking to the media after the meetings, senior leader and former Union minister Birender Singh said the Congress had lacked an organisational structure in Haryana for the past 11 years. 'The party will get further strengthened when its full organisational structure is ready in Haryana,' he said. When asked whether the Haryana Congress was a divided house, Singh responded, 'Everyone is united.'

KC Venugopal explains pension remark, says it was directed at Kerala government

All India Congress Committee general secretary KC Venugopal on Wednesday clarified that his recent remarks on the welfare pension disbursement by the Kerala government were intended to highlight the delay in payments and the tendency to clear arrears close to the elections. He said his comments had been misinterpreted and were not directed at pension beneficiaries, but rather at the government's did not say anything against the beneficiaries who deserve to get the pension on time. I only intended to point out the state government's priority with regard to its payment,' he explained. He said, 'Last year, two out of seven months arrears were paid just before the Lok Sabha polls. This year, one month's arrears are being paid just before the by-poll.' Venugopal's clarification followed strong criticism from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), which accused Venugopal of calling welfare pensions an 'election bribe' and described his remarks as baseless and misleading. The party stated that the Left government has consistently paid Rs 1,600 as welfare pension to approximately 62 lakh beneficiaries since coming to power in 2016. The CPI(M) has demanded an apology from Venugopal for his remarks. The Left party leadership said that the Congress MP should withdraw his statement as he insulted a scheme that gives solace to 62 lakh people. Kerala Finance Minister KN Balagopal said the Congress and KC Venugopal both should apologise to the beneficiaries. advertisementBalagopal also refuted Venugopal's claims, asserting that there were no major arrears in the welfare pension scheme. 'What Venugopal said was wrong and he should not try to justify it now,' the Minister said. Balagopal also added that the recent pension arrears disbursement was decided well before the Nilambur by-poll was announced, at a time when a by-election was not anticipated due to ongoing India-Pakistan tensions and the upcoming state elections in Minister also accused Venugopal for making statements that could 'insult voters' and cautioned that such remarks could alienate the public from the Congress. He further urged Congress, as a member of the INDIA bloc, to oppose Central government policies that adversely affect Kerala rather than misrepresent the state government's welfare initiatives.'The Pinarayi Vijayan government has given two instalments of pension during the election time because they see it as a bribe for buying votes. Now they will come up saying two instalments, one instalment very soon,' Venugopal had said while campaigning for the United Democratic Front in Nilambur, Malappuram, for the bypoll scheduled on June also alleged that while the government had sufficient funds for publicity efforts related to itself and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, it failed to provide timely payments to pensioners and increase the honorarium for Accredited Social Health Activist (Asha) speaking to reporters, Venugopal claimed that the amount of Rs 1,600 being given by the government was done by merging several pensions in the name of revision. He also claimed that there were huge arrears in funds to be given to the various workers' welfare boards in the state. IN THIS STORY#Kerala

Double-engine government in Bihar failed to save a 11-year-old Dalit rape victim, says Congress

Condemning the rape and murder of a 11-year-old Dalit girl in Bihar's Muzaffarpur, the Congress on Sunday (June 1, 2025) claimed that the 'double engine government' had failed to save her life. Taking to social media platform X, senior leader Rahul Gandhi said the brutality against a minor Dalit girl in Muzaffarpur and the subsequent negligence in her treatment were 'extremely shameful'. 'If she had received timely treatment, her life could have been saved. Let alone provide security, the double engine government was negligent about saving her life. We will not sit quiet until the victim's family gets justice. Strict action should be taken against the culprits and negligent officers,' he wrote. Addressing a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) office, senior party leader and Rajya Sabha member Ranjeet Ranjan and party spokesperson Shama Mohamed alleged that the administration allowed the rapist to 'roam free' despite being a serial offender. Ms. Ranjan noted that the 11-year-old victim was left to die near a brick kiln after her brutal rape. While she was first admitted to a local hospital in Muzaffarpur, she was taken to AIIMS Patna after her condition deteriorated but doctors there refused to admit her, allegedly due to the unavailability of specialists required for the multi-speciality treatment, she said. It took the intervention of Bihar Congress chief Rajesh Kumar for the victim to be admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) and that too was after five hours, the Congress MP claimed. 'If the girl was given proper treatment at the right time, her life could have been saved,' Ms. Ranjan said, accusing the JD(U)-BJP government of 'criminal medical negligence'. Ms. Mohamed said the victim's body had 20 knife marks, her neck had been cut, her body mutilated, and she was left in the brick kiln to die. 'I am a doctor myself, and I know that when a case like that comes, they immediately take it. You don't say that you don't have a specialist available—never. But what did they do? They refused to take the child because she was a Dalit. If she were a VIP's daughter or a high-caste child, she would have been admitted. Shame on the doctors in AIIMS Patna,' she said. She claimed that criminals were feeling emboldened as the BJP government had 'let powerful and influential people go scot-free despite serious charges'. 'What happened to the 'Beti Bachao, Beti Padao' slogan of the Prime Minister?' Ms. Mohamed asked.

Bandi Sanjay accuses AICC president of trying to belittle the conflict with Pakistan as a ‘small war'

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay Kumar on Thursday hit out at All India Congress Committee (AICC) president Mallikarjun Kharge accusing him of attempting to undermine the Indian Army's efforts by labeling the conflict with Pakistan as a 'small war'. Addressing a rally 'Hindu Ekta Yatra' held amid sharp spells of unseasonal rain in Karimnagar late on Thursday evening, he said in just 15 days after the Pahalgam incident, the Army wiped out the terrorists. That is the strength and bravery of our Indian Army, he noted. 'When Al-Qaeda attacked the Twin Towers in America and killed 6,000 people, even a superpower like the U.S. couldn't act for 10 years. Only after 10 years did they catch and kill Osama Bin Laden,' Mr. Sanjay said. He slammed Mr. Kharge, asking: 'Is it a small war to destroy 9 terrorist camps, 11 military bases of the Pakistan Army and 20% of Pakistan's military infrastructure?' Mr. Sanjay alleged that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi was trying to make light of the Rafale jets and the Indian Army's efforts by demanding a count of how many Rafale jets were destroyed.
