After DU, Allahabad University To Introduce 4-Year UG Courses

Last Updated: Allahabad University will launch four-year UG courses from 2025-26 under NEP 2020, offering flexible exits and honours options, similar to Delhi University's model Allahabad Central University is all set to roll out four-year undergraduate (UG) courses from the academic session 2025-26, similar to Delhi University. The move aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and was approved in a recent Academic Council meeting chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Sangeeta Srivastava. As per the new curriculum framework, the undergraduate course will be spread across eight semesters, fully adopting the semester system. Students will study three subjects in the initial years, two majors and one minor. From the third year onwards, the minor subject will be dropped, allowing students to focus solely on their major subjects. In the fourth year (seventh and eighth semesters), eligible students will have the opportunity to pursue Honours in one of the two major subjects. Meritorious students will also have the option to pursue Honours with Research. The new system offers flexibility, allowing students to exit with a certificate after one year, a diploma after two years, a degree after three years, and an honours degree after four years. Each semester will carry 20 mandatory credits, and the entire course will total 160 credits. Moreover, the university plans to introduce over 150 two-credit skill-based and optional courses under the NEP. Earlier, Allahabad University had already implemented integrated five-year courses such as BA-LLB, BTech-MTech, and BFA. Now, in the second phase of NEP implementation, all UG programmes under the Faculties of Arts, Science, and Commerce have been restructured to align with the NEP framework. Certain antidepressants used during pregnancy may cause lifelong mental health issues in children, suggests AU study

Prayagraj: Certain antidepressants may impact brain development in fetuses, potentially resulting in long-term mental health issues in children. Researchers at the Allahabad University, led by Prof. KP Singh from the Department of Zoology, investigated the side-effects of newer antidepressants, including Vilazodone (Viibryd), Vortioxetine (Trintellix), and Venlafaxine (Venlor), on infant rats. Their findings indicated that these medications can have detrimental effects on newborns. The study was published in the esteemed Springer journal Archives of Toxicology, known for its high impact factor. Prof. Singh emphasized that depression is a significant global mental health issue, affecting 2-20% of Indians, with women being two to three times more likely to suffer than men. Pregnant women are especially vulnerable, with around 10-20% experiencing depression. He stressed the importance of balancing effective treatment with medication safety for both mother and baby's well-being. To investigate this, Prof Singh's team, comprising his research scholars Pallavi Singh and Priyanka Agarwal, conducted experiments on pregnant rats, mimicking human pregnancy. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo They found that when these antidepressants were given during key stages of brain development (equivalent to the second and third trimesters in humans), the baby rats showed several alarming changes. The study found that using certain newer antidepressant drugs during pregnancy could harm the unborn baby's brain development. These drugs were linked to smaller brain size and weight in the fetus. Parts of the brain responsible for thinking, emotions, learning, memory and movement were not properly developed. This includes areas like the cerebral cortex, hippocampus, and striatum. The study found that exposure to certain antidepressants in early life led to reduced levels of crucial brain chemicals like dopamine, serotonin, and acetylcholine, which are essential for mood regulation and mental function. Additionally, the levels of substances that support brain growth were decreased, and the rate of brain cell death was increased. As a result, the baby rats developed issues such as depression, anxiety, memory problems, and emotional regulation difficulties as they matured. Prof. Singh's research revealed that antidepressants taken during pregnancy may lead to lasting mental health issues in children, persisting into adulthood. The study found that exposure to these medications in the womb caused changes in brain chemistry and function that endured even as the offspring grew up, suggesting a lifelong impact. "The young rats developed depression- and anxiety-like behaviours, along with learning and memory problems. These issues persisted into adulthood, suggesting long-lasting impacts," said Pallavi Singh, the first author of the research paper, which reported these important findings published in top international journals like Elsevier and Springer. "The key concern of the research was to highlight that the safety of newer antidepressants like Vilazodone, Vortioxetine, and Venlafaxine during pregnancy is still not well understood. More research is needed before these drugs can be considered safe for both the expecting mother and her baby," said Prof Singh.

6 hrs of heavy rain brings city to its knees; disrupts power, floods roads

1 2 3 4 5 Prayagraj: When the sky falls, the city stalls. This was again visible on Thursday, when six hours of 42mm rain disrupted daily life as several areas were inundated with knee-deep water. The rain severely impacted traffic, causing difficulties for commuters, students, and working professionals. Although the city had been under overcast skies for the past week, the persistent rain, strong winds, and thunderstorms brought significant disruptions. The strong gusts, exceeding 30 knots, uprooted trees and caused power outages in several areas, including educational institutions like the Allahabad University. Although the electricity was restored in different localities by noon, it became normal by the evening in other areas. At AU, which is powered by a dedicated 133 KVA power line, electricity was disrupted for several hours. The heavy rains also caused network disruptions, with several areas experiencing poor mobile connectivity. Exposing civic apathy, the six-hour downpour left several roads and neighbourhoods submerged in knee-deep water, disrupting daily life. School attendance was low due to the heavy rains, and while the day started normally, severe waterlogging by the end of the school hours flooded the premises, gates, and surrounding areas, causing major disruptions for students. Several busy roads and localities, including Allahapur, Tagore Town, Allopibagh, George Town, CMP, Medical Crossing, the city side of Allahabad Junction, Leader Road, Old Katra, Nakhaskhona, Baigan Toula, Niranjan Bridge, Rani Mandi and Attarsuiya, were waterlogged for several hours. Due to the waterlogged roads, several vehicles were seen stranded midway. Heavy rains caused road collapses in several areas, making commutes challenging. Power outages were also reported in various localities, disrupting potable water supply and affecting daily life, particularly in areas where water supply relies on electricity, as the outages began early morning. However, the overcast conditions and the cool breeze made the weather pleasant as people went out of their houses after the rain stopped. The city recorded the maximum temperature of 31.8 degrees Celsius, while the minimum stood at 24.8 degrees Celsius. Although the rain stopped around 1:00 pm, overcast conditions continued to dominate the sky as weather experts predicted more rain for the next 24 hours. "The city recorded 42mm of rainfall at Ghoorpur IMD station (from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm). Due to the low-pressure depression, weather conditions will remain the same as Prayagraj and the neighbouring districts will receive heavy to very heavy rainfall," said Akash Mishra, an official at IMD, Prayagraj.
