Isabel Allende's feminist manifesto continues in new book, My Name is Emilia del Valle

When Isabel Angélica Allende Llona was around nine years old, she travelled with her grandfather to the Argentinian Patagonia, where he had sheep. 'We went by train from Santiago as far to the south as the train would go, continued by car, crossed the Andes on horseback, and on the other side, we were picked up by rangers,' she writes via email. 'That journey is engraved in my memory. That's Chile for me, the country I long for.' This deep longing and loss is present in every single book Allende, now 83, has written — from her bestselling debut The House of the Spirits (1982) to her latest, My Name is Emilia del Valle (translated by Frances Riddle, published by Bloomsbury), which is set mostly between San Francisco and Chile. From the moment she flew to Venezuela where she would remain for 13 years, Chile stopped being hers in the way it had till then, and everything changed forever. Over the years, Allende would keep interrogating the themes of displacement and identity, of memory and family, as well as the potent links between the personal and the historical, through her stories. It started with The House of the Spirits, featuring the sprawling del Valle clan. A fantastically embellished history of her family, the book was inspired by Allende's maternal grandmother's family — 'they were 12 siblings, all of them quite original, wonderful inspirations for extravagant characters'. Did she know back then that she would keep returning to them, from Daughter of Fortune(1999), to Portrait in Sepia (2000), and now in My Name is Emilia del Valle? 'I had no idea if that book was ever going to be published or that I would write other books. Of course, I didn't think that clan would intrude in other books,' she says. Juggling society's mores Allende explains that Emilia sprung into being because she needed a way to write about the 1891 Chilean Civil War with a neutral voice. 'It had to be a foreigner, and I wanted a woman narrator.' Like all of Allende's heroines, Emilia too is rebellious and intrepid, and way ahead of her time. The illegitimate daughter of a former novice nun, the Irish Molly Walsh, and a Chilean aristocrat, Gonzalo Andres del Valle, who seduced and abandoned her, Emilia is raised in 19th-century San Francisco by her mother Molly and her husband Francisco Claro, the director of a local school, who dotes on her, and will support and encourage her empowerment. He is the reason she grows up with a desire to see the world and 'experience everything intensely'. This, coupled with a need to find out the truth about herself, her biological father, and a homeland she's never known, pushes Emilia, a columnist, to request a war correspondent position. But why would the newspaper, where she'd finagled a regular column writing under a male pen name, send Emilia to Chile? That's how she becomes Emilia del Valle, someone who speaks Spanish and has local family connections. Allende had to juggle the social mores of the time — so Emilia gets assigned the human-interest stories, while her male colleague, Eric Whelan, is given the more 'serious' coverage. Writing as exorcism Our focus naturally shifts to Allende's feminist manifesto, the veins of which run through all her work, and through her own life, from an age as young as five years old. 'I was an angry little girl,' shares Allende. 'They (the women in her household — her mother and the maids) had no power, no money, no freedom as the men had. That was the beginning of a lifelong feminist struggle, which crystallised during my years at Paula (Chile's first feminist magazine co-founded by Allende around the time of the second feminist wave). Those ideals have not changed.' Even through great tragedy, admirably. The Isabel Allende Foundation founded in 1996 is dedicated to the memory of her late daughter, Paula Frias, who died unexpectedly after a year spent in coma following a porphyria attack. Like everything else Allende does on the public stage, it is an extension of her feminism, offering support and empowerment to girls and women through education, knowledge about reproductive rights, protection from domestic and sexual violence. And the maverick shows no signs of flagging. 'For me, writing is not a chore. I write because I love the process. Next year, I will publish a non-fiction book about writing. And I am working on a memoir,' she says. 'I write to remember, to understand, to exorcise my demons, to overcome my obsessions. I can only write about something that I care for. I still write with the same enthusiasm and awe as I did 40 years ago.' The writer is a Mumbai-based author and editor.

Suarez steps up in Messi's absence to send Inter Miami to Leagues Cup quarters

Inter Miami needed someone to step up in Lionel Messi's absence in order to avoid an early elimination from the Leagues Cup. Fellow superstar attacker Luis Suarez answered the call. Suarez scored a penalty kick and delivered two delightful assists to send Inter Miami through to the quarterfinals via a 3-1 home win over Mexican club Pumas UNAM on Wednesday night. The South Florida side came from behind to grab the group stage victory, as Suarez dished out helpers to Rodrigo De Paul and Tadeo Allende that were sandwiched around a goal of his own. Javier Mascherano's men finished 2-1-0 with eight points in the group stage of the Leagues Cup, and as a result will open the knockout phase by hosting a yet-to-be-determined Mexican opponent on either Aug. 19 or 20. Missing Messi due to the muscle injury sustained in last Saturday's 2-2 draw with Necaxa, Mascherano trotted his team out in a 4-3-3 formation that saw De Paul playing closer to Suarez. Pumas was the better team from the run of play in the first half, and took a lead in the 34th minute when U.S.-born attacker Jorge Ruvalcaba made a fantastic run in behind the defense to tuck away a lobbed pass from Pedro Vite. Inter Miami struggled to generate clear-cut chances in the first half, but found life as Suarez sparked the comeback in the 45th minute with an assist on Rodrigo De Paul's first goal for the Herons. Suarez got on the end of a precise long ball from Yannick Bright before curling a gorgeous cross from the left to De Paul, who tucked away a low effort to the right. Inter Miami thought it had claimed the lead two minutes after halftime when a quick free kick was played past a napping Pumas back line, but Suarez's cross-body sizzler was eventually whistled back for offside. No one would deny the Uruguayan striker on this day, though. After a handball was whistled against Pumas midfielder Jose Caicedo, Suarez stepped up to the spot and gave Inter Miami a 59th-minute lead via a gutsy and classy panenka down the middle. He celebrated his 10th tally of the year across all competitions in the same manner that he had on the negated finish from earlier. Suarez raced over to the sideline to put on a cowboy hat that read 'Delfi' — an apparent nod to his daughter Delfina, whose birthday was earlier this week — before blowing a kiss. Allende wasted a glorious chance to make it a two-goal advantage for Inter Miami in the 67th minute, attempting to chip a shot over that was saved well by goalkeeper Miguel Angel Paul Hernandez. Pumas starting netminder Keylor Navas was suspended for the game due the red card he received late in the last match vs. Atlanta United. Allende atoned for his miss two minutes later by racing onto an exquisite through ball from Suarez before rolling his open look into the back of the net. Inter Miami missed two other glorious chances to find the back of the net, with Allende and substitute Benjamin Cremaschi failing to capitalize on quality looks from in close. It hardly mattered, as the South Florida side prevailed four days before returning to regular-season action. Inter Miami will next return to MLS play and travel to face arch-rivals Orlando City on Sunday night at 8.

‘Chile in Their Hearts' Review: The Perils of Activism

The events of 1973 in Chile—the violent military overthrow of Salvador Allende, the country's elected Marxist president, and the establishment of a 17-year dictatorship under Gen. Augusto Pinochet—rank among the 20th century's great political dramas. For the political left, the wound opened in Santiago 52 years ago still stings, inflamed by anger at the U.S. for trying to destabilize the Allende government before the coup and supporting Pinochet afterward. A subplot involves Charles Horman and Frank Teruggi, two young Americans who came south to experience the revolution-by-election known as 'the Chilean process.' Soldiers arrested and murdered Horman and Teruggi, then 31 and 24 respectively, shortly after the coup. Many on the left have long believed that pro-coup U.S. officials were complicit in their deaths. That suspicion reached the wider public via the Oscar-winning 1982 film 'Missing,' directed and co-written by Costa-Gavras, the Greek-French auteur. In the picture, Horman's father, played by Jack Lemmon, goes to Santiago in search of his son, only to realize that his son has been killed and that American diplomats are stonewalling him. The film strongly implies that Horman, a freelance journalist, had discovered U.S. involvement in the coup and had to be killed lest he report it. In 'Chile in Their Hearts,' John Dinges—a longtime reporter on Latin America for the Washington Post and other news organizations—renders his verdict on the U.S. role: a definitive 'not guilty.'

Palmeiras salvage draw with Inter Miami as both advance to Club World Cup last 16

Ammon News - Palmeiras rallied from two goals down to snatch a 2-2 draw against Inter Miami and qualify top of Group A for the Club World Cup last 16 on Monday, a result that sent both teams through to the knockout phase. Goals from Tadeo Allende and Luis Suarez gave Miami a two-goal lead before Paulinho and Mauricio scored in the last 10 minutes to get Palmeiras back on level terms. Both teams finished on five points with Inter Miami second on goal difference, while Al-Ahly and Porto were both eliminated after drawing 4-4. Lionel Messi's side will take on European champions Paris St Germain, where the Argentine spent two seasons from 2021-23, while Palmeiras face fierce rivals Botafogo in an all-Brazilian clash for a place in the quarter-finals. "It was a great game from us, it's difficult to play against one of the best teams in South America," said Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano, who described it as a "historic night" for Major League Soccer. "Maybe at the end we had the game in our hands so the feeling is strange but before the start of the tournament if someone told me we were going to have this kind of performance against these kind of teams I would have signed it." Inter Miami are the only team from MLS to reach the last 16 after both Los Angeles FC and the Seattle Sounders were eliminated. With the crowd heavily favouring Palmeiras and creating an atmosphere that made it seem like an away game for hosts Miami, the Brazilian side started with intensity, pressing high up the pitch but despite their energy the final ball lacked precision. Miami struck in the 16th minute when Allende surged past a static Palmeiras defence and coolly slotted home after a 40-metre run. Allende came close again early in the second half, flashing a shot narrowly wide after another quick counterattack, before Messi brought fans to their feet with a dipping volley from distance that sailed just over. Suarez, quiet for much of the game, made no mistake in the 65th minute as he cut onto his left foot and fired into the top corner from a tight angle to make it 2-0. Palmeiras pulled one back 10 minutes from time through substitute Paulinho, who guided a low finish into the corner.
