Atlanta Dream Coach Had Strong Words After Brittney Griner's Return
Atlanta Dream Coach Had Strong Words After Brittney Griner's Return originally appeared on Athlon Sports. It was a big night for the Atlanta Dream on Friday as they rallied for a 94-87 win over the Seattle Storm, improving to 5-2 on the season. After trailing by eight after the first quarter and 11 at halftime, Atlanta outscored Seattle 60-42 in the second half to earn the victory. Advertisement Atlanta's head coach, Karl Smesko, continues to impress in his debut WNBA season after a long stint leading the Florida Gulf Coast women's basketball program from 2002-24. Following the comeback win, Smesko praised his team's performance, especially the duo of Rhyne Howard and Allisha Gray, who scored 33 and 28 points, respectively. 'It seems like I'm given a new career high every game," Smesko said. "(Allisha) had her career high again. ... How about my Rhyde or die (Howard) today?" Atlanta needed that offensive production because Brittney Griner, in limited action, played just 14 minutes and went 1-for-7 from the field, finishing with only two points. Advertisement Griner had missed the previous game on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Sparks due to a knee injury. Though she was initially listed as probable, she was cleared to play just before tipoff. Atlanta Dream center Brittney Griner (42).Brett Davis-Imagn Images Even with Griner still working her way back, Smesko liked what he saw from the rest of his squad and ended his postgame comments with a motivating message. "We can still get better, and I think you guys saw we didn't look very good, and then when we got locked in," Smesko said. "Suddenly we're one of the best teams in the league." The Dream will play their third straight road game next Friday against the Connecticut Sun before hosting the Indiana Fever on June 10. Allisha Gray Sets New Career Milestone During Dream-Storm Game
Allisha Gray Sets New Career Milestone During Dream-Storm Game originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Atlanta Dream defeated the Seattle Storm 94-87 on Friday night, as they've now won four games in a row. It was a rough start for the Dream to start the game, and they couldn't get anything going on offense. As far as their defense, they couldn't stop the Storm from getting points inside the paint, and that doomed them in the first half. Advertisement To start the second half, the Dream found themselves down 17 points, but that didn't deter them. They had a huge third quarter and ended up taking the lead early in the fourth. From there, the Dream never looked back and closed out the Storm on the road. Atlanta Dream guard Allisha Gray (15) makes a foul shot against the Seattle Storm during the second half at Climate Pledge Froschauer-Imagn Images One of the biggest reasons for their comeback was because of the play of Allisha Gray, who finished with a career-high 28 points. Gray stepped up in the second half and was aggressive, getting into the paint and to the free-throw line. She also hit a few 3-pointers, and it was an overall big game for the Dream guard. Gray has been playing some of the best basketball of her career over the past few games, and it has led the Dream to four straight wins. The Dream are now 5-2 to start the season, and their next game will be on June 6 against the Connecticut Sun. If they can continue to play like this as the season continues, there's a good chance they could find themselves near the top of the Eastern Conference. Allisha Gray's historic career milestone lands her in elite WNBA company
The post Allisha Gray's historic career milestone lands her in elite WNBA company appeared first on ClutchPoints. The Atlanta Dream are 4-2 to start the season, and they recently got a big win on the road against the Los Angeles Sparks. It was Allisha Gray who led the way for the Dream, as she finished with 25 points, five rebounds, and six assists. During the game, Gray accomplished a historic career milestone, according to Dream PR. Advertisement 'With her 19th point of the game, Allisha Gray surpasses 3,500 career points, becoming the 36th fastest and 34th youngest player in WNBA history to reach the milestone. She ties Hall of Famer Penny Taylor and joins an elite group of 69 players to achieve the mark,' Dream PR wrote on X, formerly Twitter. In the past three games, Gray has led the Dream in scoring, which helped them to three straight wins. The Dream guard has stayed aggressive, getting to the free-throw line while also being efficient from the perimeter. Her defense has been a plus, as always, and they've needed her to step up with the injury to Jordin Canada. After her game against the Dallas Wings, Gray shared how she's able to do it all, and her play has shown that throughout the past few games. 'I think it just speaks to me being an all-around player. I try to benefit the game in any way I can, make the extra pass, take the open shot, and help setting up my teammates,' Gray said. 'I think that's just the unselfish play of me and being an all-around player.' Dream starting to find momentum early in the season After a close loss against the Indiana Fever, the Dream have won three straight games and are finding a rhythm. Even with injuries to key players such as Brittney Griner and Canada, they've been able to rely on their depth and get some good wins. Advertisement Head coach Karl Smesko has not had much time to implement his system six games in, but it looks like the more the team plays with each other, the better they are understanding where they're supposed to be. Brionna Jones has come in and been a force on both sides of the ball, while the guard play of Gray, Rhyne Howard, and Maya Caldwell has been great defensively. When the Dream gets fully healthy, they may be a team that could be tough to match up against and could be one of the better squads in the league.
