West Virginia Department of Agriculture to lift poultry event suspension
CHARLESTON, WV (WVNS) — The suspension of poultry related events will be lifted in May by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture. According to a press release from the West Virginia Department of Agriculture, the suspension on all poultry shows, exhibitions, meets, swaps, and poultry sales at auction or flea markets will be lifted by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture (WVDA) on Thursday, May 1, 2025. 22-year-old eagle nest in West Virginia blown from tree, killing 3 chicks The press release stated that the conditions that will need to be met for the restrictions to be lifted include: No HPAI (highly pathogenic avian influenza) found in West Virginia commercial poultry or backyard flocks located near commercial premises in April 2025. No major HPAI-related developments in neighboring states that would result in quarantine zones affecting West Virginia's poultry industry. The decision to list the restrictions came after the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) situation throughout the state and nearby regions was monitored. The West Virginia Department of Agriculture's press release stated that they will work with state and federal partners to keep an eye on the situation, especially during wild bird migration season that occurs around the middle of June. According to the West Virginia Department of Agriculture's press release, an outbreak of HPAI affected backyard and commercial poultry operations since early 2022 resulted in biosecurity measures across the nation. The suspension in the Mountain State was originally put into place as a cautionary measure to protect the poultry industry, the largest contributor to the animal agriculture economy, in the Mountain State. Three new Almost Heaven swings added in the Mountain State The West Virginia Department of Agriculture advised poultry owners, exhibitors, and event organizers to have biosecurity practices even though poultry events will be able to be held with the lifted restrictions. The press release stated that biosecurity measures can include: Limit and monitor access to poultry areas Make sure to disinfect equipment, vehicles, and shoes Separate domestic flocks from wild and migratory birds Report any unusual illness, sudden death, or a drop in egg production People can report unexpected deaths or signs of sickness in poultry flocks by calling the West Virginia Department of Agriculture's Animal Health Division at 304-558-2214.
