Gardiner Gridlock: Geotab Reveals Double Travel Times, Double the Business Strain
Challenges continue with less productivity, driver stress OAKVILLE, ON, June 9, 2025 /CNW/ - New analysis of traffic patterns on Toronto's Gardiner Expressway reveals a harsh reality for commuters and commercial fleets alike: ongoing construction is effectively doubling travel times in key areas, creating slower commutes and fleet delivery interruptions, which is hitting businesses where it hurts the most: their bottom line. This year, we found the most congested sections of the Gardiner experienced a delay of about 230%, while travelling the whole segment of the Gardiner between Highway 427 and Cherry St. generally takes twice as long as before construction started. Traffic Study Key Findings: Data from Altitude by Geotab paints a picture of the continuing congestion since the latest construction phase began on April 16, 2025. This ongoing disruption translates into tangible costs, particularly for businesses including: Double the Delay: Commuters who travel along the entire length of the Gardiner during the AM Rush Hour can expect double the travel time, since the latest construction phase commenced reducing lanes along Park Lawn Road. Business Interruptions: The inability of commercial fleets and businesses to effectively meet daily scheduling demands as their drivers are spending more time stuck in traffic. Work-related Stress: In a recent Geotab safety survey of fleet professionals, 68% of respondents reported that work-related stress negatively impacts their driving and 34% considered leaving their job in the past year. Productivity Loss: Added pressure to the regional congestion problem which is already costing billions annually in lost productivity and economic activity (Source: Toronto Region Board of Trade cite figures exceeding $44 billion). "The data clearly shows the significant strain of the Gardiner Expressway construction on daily commutes and business in the Greater Toronto Area," said Mike Branch, VP, Data and Analytics, Geotab. "This is particularly impactful for commercial fleets who have no choice but to use this key expressway to conduct business. They carry goods and equipment or are responding to service calls that can't be transferred to transit. For a fleet driver, the doubling of travel times can represent lost productivity, fewer deliveries, longer hours and more stress." "The traffic patterns in large cities like Toronto impact the entire region," added Branch. "Construction alone is one factor that can affect traffic flow. When you add a large sporting event, concert or other community event, you have a picture of where the bottlenecks will be. With the roadwork expected to continue next year, drivers should plan for significant delays along their commutes.." Altitude by Geotab launches Freight Tracker for Cross-Border and Port Movement
The recently launched Tariff Trend Tracker uses anonymized data from one of the industries largest connected vehicle datasets to provide an aggregate view of commercial vehicle movement across major bridge crossings (Ambassador Bridge, Blue Water Bridge, Montreal to New York, Peace Bridge, and Vancouver) and key ports (Los Angeles and Long Beach; Oakland; Seattle and Vancouver). Updated with key insights on a weekly basis, the Tariff Trend Tracker highlights cross-border transportation volumes, offering a unique, data-driven perspective on the impact of tariffs and other variables. Altitude's analysis of major border crossings throughout late 2024 and early 2025 shows that while widespread discussion about tariffs raised concerns, actual commercial vehicle volumes showed some localized shifts, indicating minor variations rather than considerable fluctuations across different border crossings and port locations. This highlights the complexity of isolating tariff effects from other variables, such as infrastructure projects like the Blue Water Bridge construction or toll adjustments like on the Ambassador Bridge and underscores the need for nuanced, data-driven analysis. Nate Veeh, AVP of Market Development at Altitude by Geotab, emphasized, "Businesses are feeling the pressure from policy shifts and headlines but when you look at the data, we are seeing a more nuanced story. Our tracker tool channels contextualized insights from Altitude, allowing us to keep our finger on the pulse of all cross-border freight and commercial fleet activity. It allows stakeholders to move beyond speculation and make informed decisions based on real-world evidence." The Border Freight Traffic versus Tariffs Impact Trend Tracker provides: Timely data and trends: Offers insights on a weekly basis into trade flow changes, unlike traditional reports. A unique source: Leverages one of the largest commercial telematics datasets available. Quantifiable impact: Provides stakeholders with a valuable baseline for comparison as the situation evolves. Context: Provides valuable context for businesses involved in cross-border trade, logistics companies managing supply chains, and policymakers evaluating trade regulations. "This is another tool that can bring additional insight to a very changing and complex environment," said Veeh. "Trends over time can allow planners, fleet operators, and other stakeholders to monitor and react to real data and make necessary adjustments to their business models. We believe that our data and data insights can inform the transportation and commercial freight industry." Altitude by Geotab Study Reveals Significant Potential for Truck Electrification
Data-Driven Insights Focus on U.S. Truck Stop Locations and Driving Range ATLANTA, April 24, 2025 /CNW/ - While fleet efficiency is leading the drive towards electrification, questions remain about how to overcome some of the concerns around EV charging infrastructure and battery range for heavy-duty vehicles. A new Altitude by Geotab study analyzed 2024 aggregated data from connected commercial vehicles, revealing that 58% of medium-duty trucks and 41% of heavy-duty trucks may be ideally suited for electrification because they drive less than 250 miles between visits to their depots. Fleets are increasingly seeking cost-effective solutions. Electric trucks offer lower fuel and maintenance costs, making them an attractive option for improving efficiency and sustainability. According to Geotab's recently launched Sustainability Report, the number of Geotab-connected EVs grew by 63% year-over-year and those commercial EVs traveled over 700 million miles (over 1 billion kilometers). The Altitude study focused on medium-duty (Classes 3-6) and heavy-duty (Classes 7-8) trucks and data from driving patterns, routes, distances and stops to determine the feasibility of electric truck adoption and identify strategic locations for charging infrastructure. Key Insights: Shorter distances and charging needs: The study reveals 41% of heavy-duty trucks drive short distances (less than 250 miles), making them promising candidates for electrification. Understanding duty cycles and stop durations helps determine charging windows and infrastructure requirements. Strategic infrastructure placement: Starting with depot-based charging provides a strong foundation, but understanding existing truck stop locations and truck driving behaviors is crucial to maximize the opportunity for wider electrification. But to scale effectively, we must understand where trucks already stop and how they move. Collaboration is essential: Successful electrification requires close collaboration between fleet operators and utilities. Utilities need to anticipate and prepare for increased electricity demand and provide the necessary infrastructure to support electric truck adoption. "The trucking industry is undergoing a significant transformation, driven by the need for efficiency, sustainability, and economic benefits," said Nate Veeh, AVP of Market Development at Altitude by Geotab. "Our analysis reveals that a substantial portion of medium- and heavy-duty trucks have daily driving patterns that are well-suited for electrification, where they wouldn't need to drive more than 250 miles between charges. By using data insights, utilities and other key stakeholders can pinpoint where truck concentrations are and understand their aggregate driving behaviors, to make informed decisions in terms of truck electrification and the subsequent demands on energy grids and location of EV charging networks."
