Manchester United announce Matheus Cunha transfer agreement
Manchester United have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers to sign Matheus Cunha. The Athletic reported on May 27 Wolves had given Cunha, 26, permission to undergo a medical at United and the Brazil international has now become United's first arrival of the summer window. Advertisement Cunha had a release clause worth £62.5million ($83.7m) at Wolves, and United met the terms of the forward's contract following talks on Tuesday. United had been seeking to make the payment over five years rather than two. Personal terms were already in place, with the 26-year-old keen on the move following two-and-a-half seasons at Wolves. Our first signing of the summer has been agreed 🇧🇷✍️#MUFC — Manchester United (@ManUtd) June 1, 2025 United prioritised a move for the Cunha this summer as they bid to bolster their front line, after Bruno Fernandes and Amad finished as the club's top scorers in the Premier League last season with just eight goals each. Cunha registered 17 goals in 36 matches in all competitions during the 2024-25 campaign, the most productive season of his career, despite missing six games through suspension. He joined Wolves from RB Leipzig on loan in January 2023 before making the move permanent for £43m that summer. The forward signed a new four-and-a-half-year deal in February which runs until 2029. Cunha previously attracted interest from Arsenal and Nottingham Forest. Analysis by Mark Carey Pushing his temperament to one side for a moment, there is little doubt that Cunha has been Wolves' talisman this season. Having barely played as an out-and-out striker, a return of 15 Premier League goals shows how much he has shouldered the attacking responsibility to help his side stave off relegation. Playing as a left-sided No 10, Cunha's intelligence to drift into pockets of space will often mean that all attacking roads lead through the Brazil international. As well as his goal haul, no Wolves player created more open-play chances or generated a higher expected assists tally. Ideally, you would clone Cunha and play them both — one to craft the chance and the other to finish. Advertisement United have witnessed his cheeky, South American flair first-hand after Cunha's Olimpico goal gave Wolves the lead in their Boxing Day clash this season. With Amorim's side in desperate need of a player to stitch their attack together, Cunha could be the perfect player to link the midfield and forward line — particularly given that he is adept at playing in a 3-4-2-1 system. Capable of playing anywhere across the front line, Cunha offers versatility, creativity, and goalscoring ability. The perfect combination for an elite forward. Analysis by Manchester United correspondent Laurie Whitwell Cunha's familiarity with that position behind the striker in a 3-4-2-1 formation enhances his appeal for United, who want adaptable players but also need new signings to hit the ground running. His record against United inevitably colours perceptions too. He terrorised Erik ten Hag's side when running from midfield on the opening day of the 2023-24 season and, of course, scored direct from a corner past Andre Onana at Molineux this term. Cunha's ball-carrying is an important aspect to consider in an Amorim system. Usually, Amorim has a blend in his No 10s, one a creator, the other tasked with running beyond. Cunha could offer a bit of both, but his ability to go past opponents would add dynamism and, importantly, he can carry a scoring edge. There may be questions about temperament given his bans for reactions against Ipswich Town and Bournemouth, and his work off the ball at Wolves left some staff wanting more. But he has 12 and 15 Premier League goals in consecutive seasons, after getting two in 17 games while on loan for half a campaign, which is proof of his pedigree.

Amad responds to 'unhealthy individual' in 28-word social media apology after sticking his middle finger up at a supporter during Man United's post-season tour from hell
Manchester United star Amad has taken to social media to apologise following an incident on the club's post-season tour of Malaysia. A photo of Amad appearing to put his middle finger up to a fan went viral earlier this week following United's 1-0 defeat against the ASEAN All-Star team in Kuala Lumpur. Amidst speculation online regarding what had prompted the incident, the Ivorian later revealed that the had received personal abuse relating to his mother. 'I have respect for people but not for the one who insults my mom…' he said on X on Thursday. 'I shouldn't have reacted like that but I don't regret what I did. We had a great time in Malaysia with good people.' However, the 22-year-old later apologised to those who have been disappointed by his actions, insisting his gesture was aimed solely at the individual who had insulted him. On X Amad clarified that his intention was not to 'hurt people' and insisted the post-season excursion has been an 'incredible trip' He wrote: 'Again, my intention was not to hurt people, I responded to an unhealthy individual. 'I apologize to those who feel concerned. Malaysia was an incredible trip for us.' United's tour came to an end on Friday after the club managed to salvage an unconvincing comeback victory over Hong Kong. The club found themselves on the back foot after 19 minutes when Juninho opened the scoring for the hosts. Amad was introduced at the break and United finally found their way into the game during the second half before securing a 3-1 win. The appearance marked the culmination of what has been a breakthrough campaign for Amad at United. After initially joining the club in 2020 during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's reign at Old Trafford, the winger was forced to wait for his chance in the first-team. A successful loan spell at Sunderland demonstrated his potential on the pitch, but Amad was forced to wait until late last year to finally make his mark at United.

United winger Amad explains obscene gesture
KUALA LUMPUR: Manchester United winger Amad says he doesn't regret making what appeared to be an obscene gesture towards some fans in Malaysia because his mother allegedly had been insulted. Footage shared widely on social media appeared to show the 22-year-old Ivory Coast international raising his middle finger while outside a hotel with his teammates in Kuala Lumpur earlier this week. 'I have respect for people but not for the one who insults my mum,' Amad wrote on X. 'I shouldn't have reacted like that but I don't regret what I did. 'We had a great time in Malaysia with good people.' United did not respond to a request for comment. The team's postseason Asia tour had already got off to a bad start when United lost their friendly against a Asean All-Stars 1-0 in Kuala Lumpur on Wednesday. Some fans booed in response. Even Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was disappointed, suggesting United could be relegated after watching the team lose, despite the fact they were probably affected by jet lag. 'Ouch. Man United failed to win another trophy,' Anwar, one of 72,500 fans at Bukit Jalil Stadium in the Malaysian capital, wrote on social media. 'Looks like you're in for another tough season, hope you don't drop to the Championship,' he added, referring to England's second tier. United then travelled to Hong Kong for another friendly. 'We were not really focused in the last game, and everybody can feel it,' United manager Ruben Amorim said on Thursday. 'We just want to turn the page and improve in the next season.' On Sunday, United finished 15th in the Premier League, their lowest-ever ranking in the competition, just four days after a loss in the Europa League final to Tottenham meant their European season ended without a trophy. — AP
