An elegant afternoon at Aman Nai Lert Bangkok

Opened in early April, Aman Nai Lert Bangkok, the second Aman in Thailand and the 36th property from Aman Resorts, has introduced a signature summer afternoon tea at 1872, the hotel's sunlit lounge and bar on the lobby floor. It's named after the year historic Thai investor and developer Nai Lert, aka Phraya Bhakdinorasreth, was born. A sophisticated tea should be enjoyed in an enchanting atmosphere; therefore, make a point of walking around the floor to discover Thai-inspired decorations whose inspirations may wow you. Behind the front desk, there's a white wall installation whose irregular surface should easily draw your eyes in. It's made of 3,000 luk kang, spinning tops, of varying sizes, fascinatingly arranged to spell '๑', Thai numeral one, to auspiciously signify a beginning. You can't miss a 40-foot replica of a tree with golden leaves, inspired by a centennial chamchuri tree at Nai Lert Park. It grandly reaches down from the ceiling, almost touching a reflective pond adorned with floating lanterns that evokes a Loy Krathong vibe. Handcrafted leather clouds that cast ever-changing shadows throughout the day by the kinetic lighting - a nod to Thai puppet shadow play n a ng yai. The visual feast doesn't stop there as it extends to the afternoon tea's presentation. The colourful sweet and savoury treats, befitting summery bites, stand out on a two-tier black serving tray. You can enjoy afternoon tea indoors underneath the soaring ceiling or outdoors on the expansive balcony (when the weather is kind) with an overlooking view of Nai Lert Park in the foreground and skyscrapers in the background. Created by French-born executive pastry chef Florian Couteau, the afternoon tea is inspired by his childhood memories of summertime gatherings in France. Each bite reflects the vibrancy of summer through the natural sweetness of fruits and vegetables sourced from across Thailand and beyond. No added sugar. The indulgent set kicks off with the chilled Tomato and red pepper sorbet, a gazpacho-inspired starter that opens the palate with a sweet and savoury blend. The savoury selection comprises bursting-with-flavour Smoked trout tartlet with dill-infused sour cream and ikura, savoury-yet-citrusy Duck confit waffle accentuated with orange compote and pistachio, delicate-and-decadent Alaskan crab cannelloni with apple and cucumber jelly topped with Oscietra caviar and refreshing-yet-tangy Shine muscat tartlet with thyme-infused goat cheese and sherry vinegar. For something sweet but not saccharine, dig into Melon parfait, which combines French and Thai varieties of melon for a refreshing sweetness which goes great with Prosecco jelly and slightly tangy Fromage blanc for a delicious contrast. The sweet side of the set is also a symphony of flavours, I find. Aman 70% signature chocolate tartlet blends artisanal chocolate sourced locally from Chiang Mai, Chantaburi and Phetchaburi, paired with buckwheat and miso caramel for a touch of umami. Exotic baba means the classic French cake gets a tropical treatment with pineapples sourced from Hua Hin and Phuket, and citrusy notes of passionfruit. Pistachio and berries layer cake highlights raspberries from the North while Apricot and whisky tart pairs sweet and fragrant Roussillon apricots with the smoky depth of Japanese whisky Nikka. You can't complete an afternoon tea without scones. 1872 serves freshly baked plain and blueberry scones accompanied by homemade clotted cream, banana and passionfruit jam and lemon curd. Oh, and if you like it sweet without the guilt, opt for the Mango sticky rice black tea. I don't know what kind of voodoo they do, but I do get an essence of the classic dessert in every sip. If you want to go full-on summer, opt for Summer meadow blend, which tastes orangey at first before slight bitterness quickly takes over. The tea selections from other Aman destinations, including Aman Kyoto's signature matcha, are also on offer.

A first look at Aman Resort's new Saudi Arabia hotel, Amansamar

The ultra-luxury hotel company Aman Resorts has revealed an early look at one of its first openings in Saudi Arabia as it sets to expand its Middle Eastern portfolio of hotels and private villas. The new property, known as Amansamar, is currently under construction in the Wadi Safar development, which is slated to reimagine the area into an international luxury destination. Aman's property will feature an 80-room hotel, which will promote 'peace and privacy' as well as a sense of 'calm' through the brand's signature minimalist design led by Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston Architects. The design of the property will include natural materials, subtle patterns and metallic accents to reflect the desert landscape. Alongside the hotel, Aman is also constructing a series of residences, which will be comprised of luxury villas and private estates, creating a new desert community hidden amongst the wadis. The brand already offers residences across Dubai, the Maldives, the United States and other countries, permanent homes where owners can fully immerse themselves in the brand's lifestyle offering. Amansamar's amenities will be available to both guests and residents, such as the Aman Spa with its signature hammam and banya (bath) houses and hydrotherapy facilities. Among other facilities, there will be a racquet club, multiple pools and a kids' club, while in the nearby Wadi Safar development, guests will be close to the Royal Signature Golf Course, as well as polo and equestrian facilities. Dining venues are also under construction on the site, although what they will offer is yet to be revealed. Amansamar is being constructed alongside other projects across Saudi Arabia, including Janu Diriyah, a hotel that will serve as a base to explore the Unesco World Heritage Site of At-Turaif, a maze of 15th-century palaces. Another destination, Aman AlUla, is also under development near the ancient oasis city of the same name. The ultra-luxury brand is currently expanding its Middle East portfolio, with openings also coming soon in Dubai set on the Jumeirah Peninsula. Aman was founded in 1988 and launched its first property in Phuket, Thailand, and since then has launched 36 hotels, resorts and branded residences around the world.

Aman Wadi Safar unveiled as Amansamar

In the heart of Wadi Safar, close to Diriyah's UNESCO World Heritage Site and centrally located within Riyadh, a forthcoming Aman resort and exclusive branded residences will soon rise from a dramatic desert escarpment. Reflecting the spirit of one of Saudi Arabia's most historically and culturally significant landscapes, the property will be known as Amansamar. Providing direct access to Aman's signature way of life and best in class amenities, in a setting of natural beauty, Amansamar forms part of the wider Wadi Safar development. With facilities that reflect this premier lifestyle destination, Wadi Safar offers cultural enrichment and outdoor pursuits such as golf and polo, all of which are seamlessly woven into the desert environment. Combining Aman, the Sanskrit word for peace, and Samar, an Arabic term referring to the ritual of sharing stories and knowledge with family and friends at nightfall, Amansamar represents a community founded on connection and tranquillity. The name also translates to 'the peaceful acacia tree,' a symbol of resilience and peace, known for thriving in arid landscapes. This storied tree will serve as a central feature of Wadi Safar's design language, with acacia trees thoughtfully integrated across the site to reflect a deep connection to place. Featuring an 80 key Aman hotel the property will reflect Aman's hallmark principles of peace and privacy. An oasis of calm, Amansamar will feature the brand's signature minimalist design led by Jean-Michel Gathy of Denniston Architects. Home to a limited collection of Aman-branded residences comprising ultra-luxury villas and private estates - the first of their kind in the Kingdom. Owning a residence at Amansamar offers a rare opportunity to embrace the Aman lifestyle in a profoundly private, secure, and naturally beautiful setting, complemented by the brand's unparalleled service. Each five- to six-bedroom home is set on an expansive plot starting from 9,000 square metres, thoughtfully positioned along cliffs and desert terrain to maximise natural light and panoramic views. Residents will also enjoy close proximity to Wadi Safar's Royal Signature Golf Course, designed by Greg Norman, as well as world-class polo and equestrian facilities. In addition, Amansamar's extensive amenities will be available to both guests and residence owners including an Aman Spa with signature hammam and banya houses, hydrotherapy facilities, dining venues, a Racquet Club, multiple pools, and a Kids' Club. Owners will receive privileged entry to the Residence Club - a private sanctuary for wellness, dining, and relaxation as well receiving an invitation to join the global Aman Club - with locations in Tokyo, New York and Bangkok and a robust pipeline of future destinations including Miami Beach and Beverly Hills. The Aman Club at Amansamar will offer exclusive access to select spaces, experiences and programming. Currently under construction, Amansamar joins a growing collection of Aman Group destinations in the region. These include Janu Diriyah and Aman AlUla in Saudi Arabia, Aman Dubai and Janu Dubai and the recently announced Amangati, a 183-metre luxury motor yacht developed in partnership with Cruise Saudi, set to begin voyages in the Mediterranean in 2027. With further projects to be announced in the near future, Aman Group remains steadfast in its commitment to offering ultra-luxury, culturally connected experiences across the Middle East. ABOUT AMAN Aman was founded in 1988 with the vision of building a collection of intimate retreats with the unassuming, warm hospitality of a gracious private home. The first, Amanpuri (place of peace), in Phuket, Thailand, introduced the concept and, since then, Aman has grown to encompass 36 exquisitely serene hotels, resorts and branded residences, ranging from the urban to the remote, in 20 destinations across the globe. Aman has a robust pipeline of future projects under construction. In recent years, Aman Group has grown to offer its coveted lifestyle beyond the parameters of its havens including Aman Skincare (2018), supplement range Sva (2020), Aman Fine Fragrance (2020), ready-to-wear collection The Essentials by Aman (2021), performance skincare line Aman Essential Skin (2023) and Aman Interiors (2023) offering bespoke designed furniture items inspired by the world of Aman. With innovation a cornerstone of the brand's philosophy, in 2020 Aman introduced a new hotel brand, Janu – meaning 'soul' in Sanskrit. Janu offers a unique take on hospitality where genuine human interaction, playful expression and social wellness are at the core of the experience. Janu aims to bring balance to the head and heart and rekindle the soul. In March 2024, Janu's inaugural hotel, Janu Tokyo, opened its doors and several forthcoming Janu hotels are already in development. Chef Ross Lusted has travelled the world, these are his highlights

Chef-owner of Sydney's Woodcut and Melbourne's Marmelo, and now in-flight dining partner with Qatar, Ross Lusted, makes local specialities a priority when roaming the globe. This is his Travel CV:. I was 10 and I think I only got to hold it once when we moved from South Africa. I remember the gilded crest and the smoothness of the green cover. I love passports. I used to go through a 300-page one every year when I worked for Aman Resorts, filled with visas and crazy stamps. My first holiday memory is… Going to the Drakensberg mountains, the range that denotes the border of Lesotho and South Africa, when I was 10. We stayed in rondavels, round mud houses with thatched roofs. It was very wild then. We woke one morning to a very loud scratching noise, a female rhino had entered the camp and was scratching her leathery skin against the rough walls of the rondavels. No one seemed to be the least bit concerned. We'd go hiking or horseback riding, crossing rivers where my parents would put Champagne and beer in the cold water for the return ride. It was my introduction to the breakfast buffet. This was the time I fell in love with hotels. I've been to 39 countries… And I've lived in seven. My favourite place in Australia is… Melbourne. I love how easy it is to get into the country. I visit a lot of our producers there and the landscape feels quiet and gentle. The place I'd love to visit in Australia is… The Kimberley. I lived on the border of Utah and Arizona for a couple of years and I find deserts magical. Lying on the warm desert floor by a crackling fire with the stars so close you feel like you can almost catch them. The place I'd rather be right now is… Portugal. We have a lot of Portuguese heritage in South Africa, so it has always seemed a bit familiar to me. I love the coastal towns which all seem to have a small fish market, and seaside restaurants serving traditional dishes, regional wine and of course pastel de nata and Ginjinha. The place I've visited most is... Italy. It is definitely my happy place. My partner and I got married in September so we could go to Alba for the start of white truffle season on our honeymoon. We used to live in Dubrovnik, so it was easy to do quick trips. The place that most surprised me was... Bhutan – the most extraordinary country I've travelled to. I first went about 20 years ago. The uniqueness of the five distinct valleys, architecture, lively markets and the people couldn't be more proud and welcoming. The place that didn't live up to expectations… Baja California, Mexico. It was no doubt very charming but is now extremely crowded with one hotel after another. The advice I'd give to young travellers is… Travel with only hand luggage and don't book a thing so you can be spontaneous. My holidays are devoted to... Eating, art, architecture and spending time by the sea. Denmark is a favourite. The sickest I've been on holiday… I was doing a deep dive into Bangkok street food on one trip, with a focus on nahm, a fermented pork street food – absolutely delicious until you relive it at 3am. I still eat it, however now I get it grilled a bit more. The souvenir I always buy… Ceramics. Our cupboard is like a travel diary of ceramics – pieces that instantly take you back to a time and place. The weirdest thing I've experienced while travelling... Decades ago I called a friend who was travelling in Bhutan to ask if he needed anything when I came. He said to bring a sleeping bag, flea bombs and Aerogard. It was for me for when I checked into the guesthouse. The instructions were – strip the bed, Aeroguard the mattress, flea bomb the room, go for dinner. I slept well. The weirdest things I've eaten while travelling was... Oh, so many. Yakitori chicken still in the eggshell, live eel sushi, live squid you douse in sake to slow it down before you eat it, yes, it is still moving, rakija in Croatia I'm sure you could use to run your car. My go-to for room service is... I don't have one. I always go out, cities are the best as they are waking up – chai in India, hot noodles and roti prata in Asia, jamón and fried eggs in Barcelona. The best hotel I've ever stayed in… For me it's the destination that makes a great hotel. Amanbagh in Rajasthan, set in the former walled hunting grounds of the maharaja of Alwar, is truly magical. How many flights have you missed? I've never missed a flight, although I came very close to it in Frankfurt because I left the airport to buy rye bread to take home to Croatia. Passports/visas/wallets/luggage lost? I lost luggage from New Delhi to London. I then flew to Barcelona, so it was sent there. I had left for Seville when it arrived... it was then sent to Seville. But I had left for London when it arrived. I never saw it again. I still miss those boots. What is your favourite travel companion? Camera and a Moleskine sketchbook and pencil. Flight/cruise/car or train? Flight. The only cruise I like to do is the fishing kind. When in India I love the trains. Driving everywhere else. World's Best Hotels Guide: Familiar faces and fresh suggestions

The World Tourism Awards 2024 gives a snapshot of the globe's best travel options. Our thoughts on familiar names corroborated and new places, suggestions and brands are thrown up. It isn't a surprise, in luxury and interesting accommodation, to see Raffles Singapore, Aman Resorts and the Small Luxury Hotels of the World group. But most of us won't be familiar with Amazing Evolution, named the world's leading boutique hotel operator for 2024. The 12-year-old company prides itself on offering 'a tailored approach to each project in light of its DNA'. It is no surprise to me that Serengeti Balloon Safaris in Africa was among the winners, along with the world's leading luxury train, the Maharajas Express in northern India. And there is Abercrombie & Kent as the world's best luxury safari company. But it may be a surprise that Parques de Sintra, Monte da Lua, Portugal, is the world's leading conservation company, and that Pikaia Lodge, Ecuador, is the world's leading adventure hotel. The parks, Moorish Castle and monuments of Sintra make the park at Monte de Lua one of the most historical and iconic places in Portugal. Pikaia Lodge, in the Galapagos Islands, was built using more sustainable methods and materials, and offers a high level of service. Arbatax Park Resort, Italy, was named best eco resort; Aristi Mountain Resort and Villas, Greece, as the top eco lodge; and the world's best green hotel award went to Gaia Hotel and Reserve, Costa Rica. Thanda Island, Tanzania, is the best exclusive private island. Just one kilometre long and 350 metres wide, there is just one private villa with five suites and two rustic Tanzanian bandas. It is in Tanzania's Shungimbili Island Marine Reserve, surrounded by a coral reef. Another interesting name is Sixt. It won the luxury car rental category, and Sixt Ride was named the world's leading luxury chauffeur service.
