Find out strength in Lumadan first, Amanah told

Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 By: Iskandar Dzulkifli Text Size: Kota Kinabalu: Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) is advised to re-evaluate its intention to contest the Lumadan state seat in the upcoming election by considering the strength of grassroots support in the area. Lumadan Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Division Chief Mazlan Joehari Manan (pic) said any move to contest should be made with due regard to the local political reality. He said the Lumadan seat, currently held by Datuk Ruslan Muharam of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) under the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition, remains strongly backed by grassroots supporters. 'We welcome Amanah's interest as a Pakatan Harapan (PH) component to serve in Lumadan, but they must first gauge their grassroots strength before declaring their intention to contest. 'The seat is currently held by Ruslan, who has strong grassroots support. Therefore, this momentum of support for GRS must continue without interference that may threaten this potential,' Mazlan said in a statement on Wednesday. Amanah President Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu recently stated the party's intention to contest the Lumadan, Tanjung Aru and Sulabayan seats in the 17th State Election (PRN17). Amanah is part pf the Pakatan Harapan coalition which has a political arrangement with GRS in the unity government. Mohamad reportedly said discussions are still ongoing, but negotiations involving two other undisclosed seats under PH and Barisan Nasional (BN) have already been finalised. Mazlan, who is also Special Officer to the Chief Minister, stressed that preserving the GRS-PH government's stability requires any contesting efforts to be done through consultation and mutual understanding. 'As a component of GRS, I will continue to support and defend the Lumadan seat to remain under GRS in the coming State Election. It is only right, as the Lumadan seat belongs to GRS, and the candidate for PRN17 should rightfully come from GRS,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? PAS leader pushing radical views in rally call, says Amanah veep

Amanah vice-president Mahfuz Omar said to describe taking to the streets as a religious obligation sends the wrong signal. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Amanah has accused PAS's Ulama Council chief Ahmad Yahaya of espousing radical views in saying that Malaysians are morally and religiously obligated to join an anti-Anwar Ibrahim rally this weekend. The party's vice-president, Mahfuz Omar, said as an ulama or religious scholar, Ahmad should call for calm instead of fanning divisive sentiments and exploiting religion for political gain. Mahfuz said there was nothing tyrannical about Anwar's administration to justify calling for the current government to be toppled. 'To describe taking to the streets as a religious obligation sends the wrong signal and reeks of extremism. 'The call by the Ulama Council is a form of incitement. Don't exploit Islam to seize power,' he said in a statement. Ahmad had urged Malaysians to join the mass rally planned at Dataran Merdeka this Saturday, saying it was their moral and religious duty to voice their concerns against the government. Perikatan Nasional, of which PAS is a component party, planned the rally to push for Anwar's resignation. The organisers expect up to 300,000 participants, although a similar protest in Shah Alam earlier this month drew just over 300. Mahfuz said that any change of government must be done constitutionally and not by inciting people to take to the streets. He also said the country was on the 'cusp of danger' when politicians exploit religion to seize power. 'Legitimising the opposition's tactics will destroy the nation,' he said.

Umno, Amanah divisions lock horns over Kota Iskandar seat

Amanah's Dzulkefly Ahmad (left) said PH should contest the Kota Iskandar state seat, while Umno's Abd Aziz Sapian said they would let the people judge who truly served their interests. PETALING JAYA : The Iskandar Puteri divisions of Umno and Amanah are gearing up for a possible clash in the next Johor state election, as both stake their claim for the Kota Iskandar seat. Iskandar Puteri Amanah chief Dzulkefly Ahmad had recently said Pakatan Harapan should contest the state seat currently held by Umno, even if it meant a three-cornered fight with its ally Barisan Nasional. 'There is no issue if PH has to face a three-way contest there, including against BN,' he was reported as saying. Dzulkefly, the former Kota Iskandar assemblyman, added that the division had agreed to make this call during its annual general meeting on July 20. 'This shows Amanah's commitment to strengthening the party's presence in Johor and PH's position in such strategic areas,' he said. In response, Iskandar Puteri Umno said it respected the right of any political party to contest any seat and that it was not intimidated by the Amanah man's challenge. The Umno division's information chief, Abd Aziz Sapian, said the party remained committed to bolstering Johor's political stability for the sake of the state's development and the people's welfare. He added that seat negotiations were the prerogative of the leaderships of each party and coalition, not something decided by the divisions. 'The BN assemblyman for Kota Iskandar will continue to serve until the end of his term, unaffected by Amanah's political rhetoric. 'If Amanah chooses to split the votes, Umno sees this as proof of PH's weakness in managing internal consensus. The people will judge who truly serves their interests, and who is merely chasing power,' he said. In the 2022 Johor polls, the Kota Iskandar state seat was won by Umno's Pandak Ahmad with a majority of 4,360 votes ahead of Dzulkefly. Dzulkefly, the Johor Amanah deputy chief, previously said PH might consider going solo in the next state election as BN seemed unwilling to negotiate seat allocations. Johor is currently governed by BN, which has 40 elected representatives, while PH's 12 assemblymen only serve as backbenchers in the state assembly. The opposition comprises Perikatan Nasional's three assemblymen and one representative from Muda.
