The Paige Bueckers vs. Caitlin Clark Effect: The two stars to face off when Dallas Wings host Indiana Fever at the AAC

Arguably one of the most anticipated WNBA matchups of the 2025 season is happening Friday when the Dallas Wings host the Indiana Fever at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. In short, everyone will be focused on the two No. 1 picks in the 2024 and 2025 drafts, Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers. Both are credited for helping to bring a new wave of WNBA fans to the league over the last couple of years – Clark's rookie year in 2024 and Bueckers' rookie year this season – helping boost ticket sales in both their respective cities as players. The excitement over the game prompted the Wings to move the game to the AAC, which holds more than triple the fans of the Wings' normal home court, College Park Center in Arlington. Tickets are still available, mostly on the secondary market, averaging about $130 to over $600 for seats closer to the court. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 CT. During the first five weeks of the WNBA season, the Wings are 12th in the league standings and the Fever are 7th. History between Bueckers and Clark This isn't the first time, of course, the two stars have gone head-to-head. In college, Clark, who played at Iowa, and Bueckers, a UConn star, faced off in the Women's' NCAA Tournament. In the 2021 Sweet Sixteen game between Iowa and UConn, Bueckers' near-triple-double helped lead the Huskies to a 92-72 victory over Iowa. Clark had 21 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds that game. UConn guard Paige Bueckers (5) and Iowa guard Caitlin Clark (22) walk off the court after their college basketball game in the Sweet Sixteen round of the women's NCAA tournament at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Saturday, March 27, 2021. Eric Gay / AP By the time the two teams met again, in the 2024 Final Four, a lot had changed for the college stars. Bueckers was sidelined with a torn ACL the previous year, and Clark had become a sports sensation known for her long 3s. In that matchup, Iowa was the favorite to win, being the No. 1 seed in the tournament, as UConn was ranked No. 3. In Bueckers' return to the tournament, the Hawkeyes prevailed with a close 71-69 win over UConn. Former teammates The two were also teammates for the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Women's Basketball World Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. Bueckers led Team USA with 19 points in the squad's win over Australia in the Final and was named MVP that year. Bueckers' current WNBA stats On Sunday, June 22, Bueckers passed Clark, becoming the fastest player to reach 200 points and 50 rebounds in WNBA history. She leads all rookies in scoring, and averages nearly 18 points, 4.7 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game. Bueckers hit double figures in her 12th game as the Wings defeated the fourth overall ranked team in the league, the Atlanta Dream, on Tuesday, June 24. Clark's current WNBA stats As of late, Clark has been cold from her signature long-distance 3s while on the road. But once she gets going, it could mean trouble for Dallas. She's averaging just over 18 points, 5.0 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game. She's currently ranked second overall in assists per game. Clark is also leading the fan voting for next month's WNBA All-Star Game.

Luka Dončić drops 45 points on Mavericks after wiping back tears in return to Dallas

Luka Dončić both cried and conquered in his return to Dallas on Wednesday, beginning the game with remnants of tears in his eyes before leading his new team to a 112-97 win. The former Dallas Mavericks star had 31 points at halftime before stepping off the gas a bit, eventually finishing with 45 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. It was LeBron James who power the Lakers in the second half, posting 27 points and seven rebounds. Dončić's 45 points tied a Lakers career high, while the win officially clinched an NBA playoff spot for Los Angeles. There was no shortage of speculation about how Dončić's first game back in Dallas would go. Would the Mavericks welcome him like he deserved? How receptive would he be after the trade that shook the NBA? How hard would he push to punish them for dealing him away? The emotions of the night became abundantly clear minutes before the game, when the Mavericks' tribute video reduced the 26-year-old to open tears. Luka was emotional while watching his tribute video 🥹 (via @NBATV) — Yahoo Sports (@YahooSports) April 10, 2025 Dončić told ESPN the video moved him to the point that he wasn't sure he would be able to play: 'So many emotions, can''t even explain it ... I don't know how I did it, because when I was watching that video I was like, 'There's no way I'm playing this game.' But all my teammates had my back. They really supported me, so I appreciate that.' The American Airlines Center was going through similarly conflicting feelings, loudly cheering for Dončić every time he got the ball early on while still rooting for their team to take down the Lakers. One area where they were not conflicted, though, was on Mavericks general manager Nico Harrison, who executed the trade. Chants of "Fire Nico" rang out repeatedly when players were at the free throw line. The 38-42 Mavericks were competitive for much of the game, but a 14-1 run midway through the fourth quarter put the game out of reach. The dagger arguably came from Dončić. Dončić proceeded to receive a standing ovation from the Dallas crowd as he checked out for the final time. He also spent time after the game embracing with former Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban and Mavericks fan Patrick Mahomes. Then he told ESPN he was ready to move on: "All these fans, I really appreciate it. All the teammates I had, everyone had my back. I'm just happy. I love these fans, I love this city, but it's time to move on." The Mavericks are now 0-2 against the Lakers since the Dončić trade, having lost their first meeting in Los Angeles 107-99. The Lakers improved to 49-31, holding onto sole possession of third place in the West, while Dallas still holds onto the final play-in spot in 10th place. Here's how it all went down on Yahoo Sports:

Luka Dončić fights back tears during Mavericks' pregame video tribute in return to Dallas

The Mavericks honored Dončić with a video and Slovenian 'thank you' shirts in his first game back in Dallas since his trade to the Lakers The Dallas Mavericks showed their appreciation for Luka Dončić in his return to the American Airlines Center on Wednesday. After starring with the franchise for six-and-a-half seasons, Dončić was shipped to the Los Angeles Lakers in a shocking February trade. The Mavericks hoped to erase any bad blood from the trade by paying tribute to Dončić before he took the court Wednesday. The team put together a pregame video of Dončić's almost seven years in Dallas, including highlights and off-court moments from his time with the franchise. Dončić was visibly emotional during the tribute, wiping away tears before being announced as part of the Lakers' starting lineup. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Translation on T-shirts at American Airlines Center: Thank you so much — Tim MacMahon (@espn_macmahon) April 9, 2025 The franchise should be thankful for Dončić's contributions. After being acquired by the Mavericks during the 2018 NBA Draft, Dončić excelled immediately, winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award in his first season. He posted three top-five MVP finishes over that period, and never finished lower than eighth in the voting. The Mavericks made four playoff appearances with Dončić, getting all the way to the NBA Finals last season. Despite Dončić averaging 29.2 points per game in the Finals, the team fell to the Boston Celtics in five games. Dončić was once again having a typically good season but was out with a calf injury when he was traded. The deal sparked outrage among Mavericks fans, who showed up in force to protest the move. Shortly after the trade, Dončić thanked the fans for their support. Even with the support from Dallas fans, he didn't let that stop him from showing out: Dončić put up 45 points in an easy Lakers win against his old franchise. After the game, Dončić said that he felt "so many emotions" watching the video. "It brought tears to my eyes," he said. "I came (to Dallas) as a young kid. ... They made me feel like home. Just a lot of great memories. "I'm so happy," Dončić added. "I love these fans, I love this city, but it's time to move on." ADVERTISEMENT Advertisement Dončić admitted he wasn't sure if he'd be able to play well after such an emotional moment pregame. But he said his teammates were the ones who helped him thrive. "I don't know how I did it, because when I was watching that video I was like, 'There's no way I'm playing this game.' But all my teammates had my back. They really supported me, so I appreciate that," Dončić said. To view this content, you'll need to update your privacy settings. Luka Doncic after dropping 45 PTS in his emotional return to Dallas with the Lakers ❤️ — ESPN (@espn) April 10, 2025 "Just to be back with the fans that I spent six and a half years with, you know, supporting me like that was just unbelievable," he added. The Lakers secured a playoff berth with Wednesday night's win and one more victory would mean claiming the No. 3 seed in the West. The Lakers play Houston on Friday and Portland on Sunday.
