Netflix fans 'can't sleep' after watching twisted film that streaming giant is taking down

A controversial thriller that left fans feeling uneasy is leaving Netflix soon Netflix subscribers have just a limited time to stream a controversial thriller that left fans unable to sleep. ‌ American Psycho was released in 2000, and is the film adaptation of the 1991 bestselling novel of the same name, written by Bret Easton Ellis. ‌ Directed by Mary Harron, the horror thriller stars Christian Bale as Patrick Bateman, a narcissistic banker living in New York during the 80s, who is leading a double life as a serial killer. ‌ Seeming normal to the outside world, behind closed doors Patrick is hiding an extreme violent streak as he commits unhinged and brutal acts of murder and torture. Packed within its 102 minute run-time, American Psycho has plenty of kills, drug-taking and sex. In one notable scene, an axe-wielding Patrick goes on a killer rampage, murdering Jared Leto's character Paul Allen. ‌ The cast of the film - which developed a cult following in the decades since its release -also includes stars like Willem Dafoe, Justin Theroux and Reese Witherspoon. What's more, the critical response to American Psycho was fairly good. On Rotten Tomatoes, it was given a 68% "fresh" rating based on over 100 reviews from 2000 to 2023. ‌ The movie - which leaves Netflix on August 10 - fared pretty well at the box office too, grossing $34 million from a $7 million budget. As for fan reaction, American Psycho certainly left people divided. Online, one person said: 'It was so twisted I loved it.' Someone else fumed: 'Not a fan, gross and too violent for me.' A third chimed in: 'I couldn't sleep after watching it! One of those that sticks with you for sure.' Another also wrote: 'It's my favorite movie and it's the movie I've seen the most times. I never get bored of it since there are so many great details.' ‌ Meanwhile, last year it was reported that Austin Butler is set to take on the role of Patrick in a modern remake of American Psycho. Best known for his Academy Award-nominated performance as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann's Elvis, Austin is said to be collaborating with acclaimed director Luca Guadagnino for a fresh cinematic interpretation of the film. Variety confirmed the casting and announced that the project is being developed by Lionsgate and will bring a bold new vision to the 2000s thriller.

Julia Roberts looks set to give fans all-star performance in new psychological thriller

The trailer has been released for award-winning director Luca Guadagnino's next psychological thriller starring Julia Roberts, Andrew Garfield and Ayo Edebiri. The film, entitled After The Hunt, centres around a college professor who finds herself at a 'personal and professional crossroads' when a star student levels an accusation against one of her colleagues, while a dark secret from her past threatens to come to light. Call Me by Your Name star Michael Stuhlbarg and American Psycho's Chloë Sevigny are also included in the star-studded cast. Andrew Garfield looks intense in the After The Hunt trailer. Pic: Sony Pictures The trailer kicks off with Ayo's character, the star student Maggie, seemingly invited to an after-hours gathering with her professors and other select students. She has a back and forth debate with the professor named Hank, played by Andrew Garfield, about the views that different generations have on 'offending' people, with Hank questioning when younger people made it a 'cardinal sin' and why they are afraid to 'say the wrong thing'. Maggie hits back with: 'Maybe it was around the same time your generation started making sweeping generalisations about ours.' The trailer takes a dark turn when Maggie skips her favourite professor's (Julia Roberts') class and waits for her at what appears to be the home she shares with Michael's character. Ayo Edebiri already has a huge Irish following. Pic: Sony Pictures Maggie, looking dishevelled and incredibly uneasy, tells her with a shaky voice that Hank 'crossed the line' after walking her home. Tension further rises when Maggie brings up her professor's 'history' as the focus shifts to Julia's character's mysterious backstory. What follows is a series of scenes that establish Julia's position as the centre of conflict between students and professors, hearing stories from both sides and seemingly weighed down by a fast-approaching dilemma that will affect both her personal and professional relationships. Michael Stuhlbarg is another strong addition to the After The Hunt cast. Pic: Sony Pictures Julia ends the trailer in suspense as she whispers to Maggie: 'Not everything is supposed to make you feel comfortable.' Luca Guadagnino has consistently delighted fans in the past with his films, such as Call Me by Your Name in 2017 and Challengers in 2024. The Italian director will be hoping this latest thriller could earn him a second Oscar nomination for Best Picture, with his first coming in 2018 for the aforementioned drama starring Timotheé Chalamet. Julia Roberts looks set for a big performance. Pic: Sony Pictures Meanwhile, Ayo Edebiri is a popular figure among Irish fans who have a long-running joke that she is one of our own, despite her having no technical heritage from the island. Since using an Irish accent in an interview where she joked that she played Jenny the donkey in The Banshees of Inisherin, Ayo was labelled an 'honorary Irish person' across social media and the gag has continued over the past couple of years. Now, she looks set to shine as bright as both Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield in what could be three of the most gripping performances of 2025. After The Hunt, written by Nora Garrett, will arrive in cinemas this October.

Andrew Garfield signs on to Luca Guadagnino's Artificial with Cooper Koch

Andrew Garfield has officially signed on to star in director Luca Guadagnino's Artificial alongside Cooper Koch. The Amazing Spider-Man actor, 41, is set to lead the filmmaker's upcoming artificial intelligence movie with Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story breakout star Koch, 28, Deadline has said. Described as a 'comedic drama set in the world of artificial intelligence', Artificial will reportedly be set in 2023 when OpenAI CEO Sam Altman was fired and subsequently rehired at the company in a matter of days. Anora's Yura Borisov is also due to star in the film, though it has not been confirmed what role he has signed on to play. While little is known about the character Koch will be playing in Artificial, it is assumed that Garfield is due to portray Altman, while Borisov takes on the role of Ilya Sutskever - a co-founder who led the movement to remove Altman from OpenAI. A Complete Unknown's Monica Barbaro is also still in talks to play chief technology officer Mira Murati. Writer Simon Rich has penned the script and is set to produce alongside Heyday Films' David Heyman and Jeffrey Clifford, as well as Jennifer Fox. Artificial will mark the third collaboration between Guadagnino and Amazin MGM Studios after they worked on 2024's Challengers and the upcoming thriller After the Hunt, which also stars Garfield and is due to release in October. When the project was announced in June, David Heyman said: 'We've always wanted to work with Luca. His talent, his sensibility – he is a singular filmmaker, and I'm excited to be collaborating with him on this.' Aside from Artificial and After the Hunt, Guadagnino is also working on a new movie adaptation of author Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel American Psycho. In April, the director teased 'the script is coming out very handsomely' for the film as he and writer Scott Z. Burns continue to work on the movie. Appearing in a video segment at CinemaCon, Guadagnino said: 'We are really working hard to bring to the screen a new adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' American Psycho, a book that I deeply love that is something that influenced me so much. '[Burns] is doing an incredible job. The script is coming out very handsomely.' Although the director didn't confirm casting details, he hinted he was in 'conversation with very exciting performers to play the leads'. Reports from December suggested Austin Butler had been lined up to play Patrick Bateman, the role made famous by Christian Bale in the original 2000 film. Guadagnino's version, however, won't be a direct remake, and has instead been promised as a fresh approach with a heightened erotic tone compared to the original. Lionsgate film chief Adam Fogelson has praised the director's vision, calling him the 'perfect visionary' to lead the project. He said in a statement: 'We are thrilled to add another elite filmmaker to our upcoming slate. Luca is a brilliant artist, and the perfect visionary to create a whole new interpretation of this potent and classic IP.'

Victory Lap: Fred Again needs to give Hanumankind a proper verse, listen to the song before Instagram ruins it

After Ed Sheeran and Arijit Singh sang their way into the hearts of millions of people worldwide with 'Sapphire'', the music gods have blessed us again, and this time they have done that through producer and DJ Fred Again, who basically just called everyone on his contact list and made a song that is already taking the world by storm within just 24 hours of its release. The DJ dropped two tracks on Spotify titled 'Victory Lap' pt. 1 and 2, and while the overall structure and instrumentation of both tracks are the same, the second part leaves nothing to one's imagination with electrifying verses from some of the biggest names in the industry, including a single-bar cameo from Hanumankind. Hard-hitting hi-hats and snares along with a bass track (which is more addicting than whatever Eric Clapton was consuming back in the 70s) almost creep up on you layer by layer, as Doechii kicks things off with a 'hook'-like verse which later becomes the bridge between different sections performed by other artistes. As soon as you start bopping your head, trying to keep up with the instrumental along with Doechii's crisp delivery, which seems to suit her more than some of her slower and profound tracks, British rapper Skepta enters the booth with bars that make you wonder whether he is rapping to save his life. The grime rapper references everything from podcast hosts Wallo and Gillie to Hugo Boss and Patrick Bateman from the movie American Psycho before he lays the ball up for Denzel Curry to completely slam it home 6 ways to Sunday. ALSO READ: From the 'soundproof' hills of Kashmir to Bollywood: Meet Faheem Abdullah and Arslan Nizami, musicians behind Saiyaara's title track If some of you have forgotten who Denzel is or what he is capable of, he was the one responsible for millions of memes and vines that were created on his track 'Ultimate'. Since then, he has been putting in the work and dropping quality projects, along with performing impressive covers of rock bands such as Rage Against The Machine. Curry goes deep in his arsenal, and after skirting with the speed limit of the track, switches to half-time delivery, which adds another impressive layer to the already engaging song by giving a breather, which doesn't take away from the pace of the track but still allows you to sit back and take it all in. Curry transitions into a bridge after that, with Doechii finishing things off with her hook of the song. Just before the curtain closes, though, you can hear a single line sung by a pretty familiar voice, as Hanumankind closes the song with a single bar. One can only hope that this is some kind of a hint that Fred and Hanumankind are planning to work on a project together in the future, and if this hip-hop-heavy track was any kind of indication, the audience is in for a real treat.

Was a cluster of serial killers in the north-east US partly caused by industrial toxins, a new book asks

Non-fiction A recent rewatch of Se7en, David Lynch's 1995 thriller, was a reminder of a strange time in western culture: when serial killers were all the rage. From the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, these monsters and their 'Grand Guignol' crimes were everywhere. Every second movie had a serial killer villain, as did TV phenomenon Twin Peaks; American Psycho and Hannibal Lecter were literary sensations. Even bands got in the act: Antrim rockers Therapy? with Trigger Inside, off the Troublegum album, U2 with Exit from The Joshua Tree.
