Why are Lotto, Powerball jackbot draws no longer televised live?

Ithuba – the licence operator of the South African lottery – have long been accused of rigging their Lotto and Powerball jackpot draws, which have become digitised in recent years. Earlier this week, the anonymous winner of R124 million raised eyebrows after claiming she had mistakenly ignored a notification from her bank. Since Ithuba took over the licence in 2015, under the guidelines of the National Lotteries Commission (NLC), the lottery has steered away from live televised draws. From glamorous shows like the Road To Riches , presented by the glamorous Amor Vittone and the charming Nimrod Nkosi, winning numbers are now picked by a random number generator (RNG) system. According to Ithuba, the Lotto and Powerball jackpot numbers are drawn in the presence of an independent auditor, and under surveillance. They are then verified and broadcast to the public via a digitised system. Ithuba's Michelle van Trotsenburg revealed that Lotto and Powerball winning numbers were generated shortly before their scheduled broadcast in a 'rigorous pre-draw process to ensure accuracy and security' The stringent verification process was in line with global standards. 'The authenticity of each draw is ensured through independent verification, regulatory oversight, and thorough documentation at every step', Trotsenburg said. South Africa's National Lottery shifted to digital RNG draws in 2015 under Ithuba for better security, efficiency, and to reduce tampering risks, with physical balls as backup only. Live broadcasts continue on SABC2 (Lotto) and Mzansi Magic (PowerBall), but show animated results… — Grok (@grok) August 8, 2025 'Our unwavering commitment to transparency and alignment with global best practices ensures the integrity of each draw,' she added. Although digital draws are the norm, Ithuba states that ball machines still exist, but are 'only a consideration if the RNG is not functioning.' On the X app, South Africans have called for Ithuba to revert to physical, and not electronic, Lotto and Powerball draws. South Africans are voicing their concern over the legitimacy of a R124 million Powerball winner. Many are demanding the return of live Lotto draws. Image via @sa_lottery Many believe the digitised system is 'rigged', with numbers pre-selected. Others claim there is no proof that winners exist. Go back to the days of live lotto draw with a presenter announcing the selected machine and the ball set, a special guest pressing a button to release the balls and an auditor physically there watching. Until then, you're lying, we don't believe you, you're handpicking winners. — MENELIKZA🇿🇦🇵🇸 (@tshepomahlonoko) August 7, 2025 Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Amor Vittone claps back at claims she was divorced from Joost

Amor Vittone has clapped back at claims she was divorced from the late Springbok Joost van der Westhuizen when he died in 2017. The singer and actress wed the rugby player in 2002 and were separated at the time of his death, after a long battle with motor neurone disease. What followed was a bitter, public dispute over his will. Speaking on Jacaranda FM last week, Amor Vittone clarified the confusion surrounding her relationship status with the late Joost van der Westhuizen. She told Martin Bester: 'We weren't divorced, I am widowed. Does it make a difference?'. The former Lotto presenter married the celebrated Springbok in 2002 in community of property. The nuptials occurred months after his divorce from his first wife, Marlene, was finalised. During their marriage, Joost and Amor welcomed two children, son Jordan and daughter Kylie. Amor Vittone and Joost van der Westhuizen's marriage was prime tabloid fodder, filled with allegations of infidelity, drugs, and even claims their romance began while the Springbok was still married, the latter of which both denied. In 2010, the rugby's golden couple began divorce proceedings. But, despite persistent social media commentary, the duo were not divorced but instead separated at the time of his death. According to Joost & Amor: Behind the Headlines author Gavin Prins, the couple had reconciled but lived in separate homes. Amor was supportive of her spouse and often visited him with their two children. Amor Vittone and her late husband, Joost van der Westhuizen. Image via Facebook The contents of Joost van der Westhuizen's will were made public in the months following his death. According to his family lawyer, Ulrich Roux, the popular player reportedly updated his will in 2015, appointing his brother Pieter as his executor. In the new will, he left his entire estate to his two children with Amor Vittone: son Jordan and daughter Kylie v,ia his trust. To his wife of 15 years, he left a mere television set. However, Amor maintains that the 2009 joint will, in which she was Joost's only heir, was his only valid will. According to IOL, Amor petitioned the Supreme Court for leave to appeal the court's ruling on the will. In a 2018 social media statement, Amore revealed that she would 'appeal to death' Fast forward to 2022, Amor confirmed that the dispute over the will was ongoing. In an interview on Laataand by Rian last year, Amor recalled how Joost promised to always provide for her and her children. She claimed he wrote her a letter begging for her forgiveness.
