Man United signs Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford as Ruben Amorim continues overhaul
MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Bryan Mbeumo became Manchester United's second major signing of the transfer window on Monday after completing a move from Brentford for 65 million pounds ($87 million). Mbeumo follows the signing of Matheus Cunha from Wolverhampton Wanderers as United coach Ruben Amorim looks to overhaul his squad following United's worst ever season in the Premier League. 'As soon as I knew there was a chance to join Manchester United, I had to take the opportunity to sign for the club of my dreams; the team whose shirt I wore growing up,' Mbeumo said. 'My mentality is to always be better than I was yesterday. I know that I have the spirit and character to reach another level here, learning from Ruben Amorim and playing alongside world-class players.' The fee for the 25-year-old Cameroon international was confirmed to The Associated Press by a person with knowledge of the deal. The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because details have not been made public, said the price could to 71 million pounds ($95 million) based on performance-related add-ons. Among United's problems last season was a lack of goals and Amorim has tried to address that with his transfer dealings so far. Mbeumo scored 20 goals last term and Cunha scored 17. By comparison United strikers Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee scored just 18 between them. A center forward could also be added before the transfer window closes Sept. 1. United's forward line is being transformed by Amorim, with Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho and Antony all expected to leave during the offseason. Mbeumo has proven himself in England's top flight with Brentford and is coming off his best goal-scoring campaign. The 25-year-old Cameroon international was the joint fourth leading scorer in the league, with only Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland netting more. He scored 70 goals in 242 games for Brentford in six years at the club. His move comes more than a month after United made its interest in him known and the deal has been completed in time for him to join Amorim's squad for its preseason tour to the United States. Amorim is aiming to turn United's fortunes around after 12 years without winning the league title. The team finished last season in 15th place, its lowest in the modern era and just three places above the relegation zone. United also set unwanted club records for the most losses in a Premier League season and the lowest points total. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. It had the fifth worst scoring record in the top flight and missed out on qualification for Europe after losing the Europa League final against Tottenham. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:

Chelsea set astonishing asking price for Manchester United transfer target
Chelsea have set an astonishing asking price for Nicolas Jackson who has emerged as a transfer target for Manchester United. The Blues spent £32million on the Senegal international who joined the west London club from Villarreal two years ago. Jackson has shown flashes of potential during two turbulent years at Stamford Bridge but has been let down by inconsistent finishing and a suspect temperament. Sent off in a potentially decisive defeat against Newcastle at the end of last season, Jackson was again in hot water when he was dismissed in Chelsea Club World Cup defeat against Flamengo. Jackson was used sparing thereafter and made only one subsequent appearance as a second half substitute against Fluminense. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. With Joao Pedro having made a sensational start to his Chelsea career and fellow summer recruit Liam Delap also an option, Jackson looks likely to fall down the pecking order should he stay and fight for his place. With United's increasingly desperate search for a new centre forward intensifying, however, Chelsea have upped their valuation of a player who also has admirers at Liverpool. According to Sky Sports, Chelsea will demand between £80m and £100m having taken note of the fee Liverpool are willing to pay for Eintracht Frankfurt's Hugo Ekitike. The Red Devils, meanwhile, begun their pre-season campaign against Leeds United on Saturday having made just two significant additions to their squad. Matheus Cunha's move from Wolves was wrapped up early in the window with the minimum of fuss, while it remains to be seen how prominently teenager Diego Leon will feature following his move from Cerro Porteno. Ruben Amorim had hoped that Bryan Mbeumo's transfer would have been resolved by now, but Brentford's refusal to be railroaded into a sale has seen that saga drag on. United are confident that a third bid, closer to the Bees valuation, will see the Cameroon forward join imminently, but United are still desperately short of attacking options. More Trending Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee have both been linked with returns to Serie A having failed to convince they are worthy of being regarded as United's main source of goals. United had shown interest in Amorim's former Sporting Lisbon charge, Viktor Gyokeres, but the Sweden international has been steadfast in his determination to join the Gunners. Amorim's club still maintain an interest in Benjamin Sesko but are unlikely to be able to match RB Leipzig's demands. Man Utd to take £200m hit as Ruben Amorim sends brutal message to out-of-favour stars
Ruben Amorim is overseeing a rebuild with Manchester United, spending big on new signings while preparing to take a big financial hit on some of his sidelined stars Manchester United are willing to accept cut-price offers for Ruben Amorim's outcasts – with Marcus Rashford's asking price slashed to £26million. Amorim exiled five players – Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Tyrell Malacia – from training after all declared their desire to leave. While Rashford is finalising a loan move to Barcelona for the upcoming season, the futures of the rest remain unresolved, with all four finding themselves in limbo. Rashford underwent a medical in Barcelona on Monday, ahead of a season-long loan deal, at the end of which the Spanish giants can sign him for £26m – a huge drop from his market value of £100m a few years ago. Barca will cover Rashford's wages for the loan period, with the 27-year-old - who earns £325,000-a-week at United – having accepted a 15 percent pay cut to move to the Nou Camp. United's squad fly to the US on Tuesday to begin their two-week pre-season tour and Amorim has axed all four from the travelling party, forcing them to stay behind and train. Such is United's desperation to offload those players who have been left behind, the club are willing to take a major hit on the transfer fees they could have received for them at the height of their value. Garnacho's highest market value was £70m a year ago, but his stock has fallen so low that United are willing to accept a fee of around £40m for the 20-year-old winger. It is a similar story with Sancho, signed from Borussia Dortmund for £73m in 2021, but who United are now happy to let go for £15m, just to be rid of him, although with only a year left on his contract, a loan move next season is most likely. Winger Antony joined United for £86m in 2022, but his value has also plummeted, with interested clubs now being quoted around £30m to sign him, while a fee of around £5m will be accepted for Malacia, valued at £20m a couple of years ago. In the past, United have taken on tour players who they intended to sell, most recently Sancho, who travelled to the US last summer and played, despite going on loan to Chelsea when the squad returned to the UK. Romelu Lukaku went on the 2019 tour of the Far East and Australia but did not play a minute for United, ahead of his move to Inter Milan later that summer. But the willingness of the United hierarchy to back Amorim's ruthless decision to order his exiled stars to stay behind and train, while the rest of the squad embark on a lucrative three-game tour of the States, underlines the strength of backing for the Portuguese head coach, despite last season's disastrous 15th-placed finish in the Premier League.

Gautam Gambhir's Coaching Wavelength Matches With Manchester United's Ruben Amorim: "Players Must..."
Does a player adjust to the team or a team adjusts to the player was the topic of discussion between Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir and Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim when their respective sides gathered at Red Devils' training headquarters at the Carrington. The situation Gambhir and Amorim find themselves in is quite similar. In the last 10 games that United have played under Amorim's stewardship, they had lost six games, while under Gambhir, India have lost eight out of their last 11 Tests. While the meeting didn't happen at the Old Trafford but the main protagonists of 'Theatre of Dreams' were all present to welcome the Indian squad at a sponsor's event with jerseys being exchanged. "It was a nice interaction about what his (Amorim's) ideology is towards team sport and what my ideology is towards team sport. The basic foundation of team sport is very similar, where I feel, it is the player that adapts to what the team needs rather than team that adapts to a certain individual, the culture which we want to build," Gambhir, who like Amorim is under pressure, told Kuldeep Yadav, a football freak and a die-hard Barcelona fan who also follows Manchester United, spoke about Amorim's tactics. "I was looking forward to talking to Ruben Amorim. I have followed him since Sporting (Lisbon). I asked him a bit about tactic, whether he would stick to 3-4-3 this season and a chance to chat with Casemiro about how I admire him as a player," Kuldeep said. He later took to 'X' and posted his photo with Amorim. "Sharing football knowledge with the man who's redefining the game." Former England batter Kevin Pietersen didn't mind pulling Kuldeep's leg with a reply: "Very very very poor team" to which the wrist spinner wittily replied, "Very very good human being just like you." India skipper Shubman Gill and United skipper Bruno Fernandes also exchanged pleasantries while Harry Maguire was seen joking with Mohammed Siraj. "Very exciting to meet top athletes of the world from another sport, get to know stories, mindset. When you step onto the field, more than what people expect from you, it is about you being able to enjoy your game," Gill said.
