SBI leads $9.2 bn QIP spree as firms tap market rally to raise funds

State Bank of India's recent record offering is leading a summer onslaught of a fast-tracked type of share sale as local companies take advantage of this year's stock-market rally to raise funds. About 40 Indian firms, led by banks, announced plans in July to raise more than ₹80,000 crore ($9.2 billion) via qualified institutional placements, according to data compiled by That may put Indian QIPs, which are only offered to professional investors, on track for one of their biggest years on record. QIPs have become a popular way for local companies to raise funds fast — these deals can be executed within weeks, instead of the months it usually takes to carry out public offerings in India. After the country's benchmark index climbed every month from March through June, optimism is running high that institutional investors will continue to snap up such deals. 'Robust secondary markets and ample liquidity have created conducive conditions for fundraising,' said Amrendra Singh, group head of equity capital markets at SBI Capital Markets Ltd. 'Banks are raising money to meet capital requirements, while companies are looking to improve their finances and fund future growth.' But the more companies issue shares via initial public offerings or QIPs, the higher the risk they will suck up money that would have otherwise gone to the stock market. India's benchmark Nifty 50 Index has pulled back some its gains in recent weeks amid concerns over things such as tariff negotiations, putting the gauge on track for a decline in July. That didn't deter investors from flocking to SBI, India's biggest lender. Bids for SBI's sale amounted to ₹1 trillion, or four times the ₹25,000 crore of shares being offered, people familiar with the matter have said. More than 10 other lenders, including Axis Bank Ltd., IDBI Bank Ltd. and IndusInd Bank Ltd., have announced plans to raise a total of more than ₹50,000 crore, according to the data compiled by Beyond banks, firms such as Reliance Power Ltd., Reliance Infrastructure Ltd. and Amber Enterprises India Ltd. have also announced fundraising plans. 'Companies are preparing to use this window to raise capital at higher valuations,' said Pranav Haldea, managing director at Prime Database Group. 'The QIP route offers companies a fast-track option to mobilise funds, while providing institutional investors an opportunity to acquire sizable stakes at a predetermined price.' This year, 25 companies have raised ₹56,100 crore via QIPs, according to data compiled by primedatabase. Though it may be difficult for this year's tally to exceed 2024's record ₹1.36 trillion raised through this type of offering, recent announcements indicate this year's total could surpass the ₹80,800 crore raised in 2020. QIPs are offered to large professional investors, allowing listed issuers to bypass the regulatory scrutiny and marketing typically needed for follow-on public offerings, shaving months off the process.

During the operation, police also seized equipment used to tamper with engine and chassis numbers, along with three motorcycles that were already altered with fake identification numbers. The gang members, who learned motorcycle theft techniques from a Kanjar settlement at Piplarawa in Dewas, initially stashed the stolen vehicles in abandoned buildings and isolated spots within the city before delivering them to buyers based on demand. The accused used tools such as grinders, gas lighters, chisels, and specialised dyes to erase original numbers and stamp. So far, 19 FIRs were linked to the recovered motorcycles. ACP Aditya Patel said a team led by inspector Taresh Soni began intelligence gathering after receiving alerts on July 13 about a gang operating in Lasudia area and across Indore using Kanjar-style methods of bike theft. On the same day, two gang members — Abhishek Malviya (22) and Kailash alias Golu (24) — were arrested near Scheme 136 with a stolen bike and an illegal knife. Both sustained minor injuries while trying to flee. During questioning, the duo revealed that they were trained in Piplarawa and were active in thefts over the past couple of years. They confessed to selling bikes on demand, especially to one Jenpal Singh Sendhav (39) of Talod village, who was also arrested for buying and reselling the stolen motorcycles in rural markets, Patel said. The ACP said later, two more accused — Rahul Malviya (23) and Anil Panwar (22)— both involved in the theft and modification of the bikes were arrested. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The accused revealed that they would cut ignition wires, hot-wire motorcycles parked in isolated places, and later hide them in vacant property until a buyer placed an order. Each of the accused played a specific role ranging from theft to tampering and selling. The massive haul includes vehicles registered in police cases across Lasudia, Vijay Nagar, Heera Nagar, Kanadia, Khajrana, Tilak Nagar, and several police stations in Dewas district.

Knife wielding gang held for making social media reels

Indore: In a crackdown on youth flaunting weapons on social media, Kanadia police station in Indore arrested members of a knife-wielding gang, including two adults and four juveniles, and recovered six illegal knives from their possession. Additional DCP Amrendra Singh said that the group was making social media reels while brandishing sharp-edged weapons in public areas, allegedly drawing inspiration from gangsters and online content. On June 29, acting on a tip-off about a group of suspicious individuals gathering at Chor Bawdi Road, Kanadia police launched an immediate operation. A team was dispatched to the location, where officers surrounded the suspects and detained them. A search led to the seizure of four sharp-edged knives, one spring-action knife, and one dagger-like weapon. The arrested individuals, most of whom are minors, are residents of the Gandhi Nagar police station area. During questioning, they revealed that they were friends and came to the Indore bypass to hang out and create videos for social media platforms. The minors were heavily influenced by online trends and the portrayal of gang culture. Following the arrests, six separate FIRs were registered under relevant sections of the Arms Act at Kanadia police station, and further legal proceedings are underway. The action was taken under the directives of the Indore police commissioner, who has called for strict measures against individuals in possession of illegal weapons and those glamorising violence on social media.
