Trichy division realises Rs1.2 lakh as fine for railway gate violations

Trichy: As many as 39 cases of boom barrier (railway gates) damages and other violations were booked and 1.2 lakh was collected from violators between Jan and May 2025 by the Trichy railway division. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Speaking at the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD) observed on Thursday to raise awareness on the importance of safety at railway level crossings, M S Anbalagan, divisional railway Manager (DRM) informed that the division maintains 493 level crossing gates. Emphasizing growing concern over gate rule violations, he said that 90 cases were booked last year (Jan–Dec 2024), and 11 lakh were collected as penalties. He stated that reckless behaviour by road users not only damages railway property but hampers train's punctuality and endangers human lives. To mitigate such risks, cautionary and statutory signboards were installed to advise road users to strictly adhere to safety norms while crossing the railway tracks. The DRM underlined the ongoing efforts to enhance safety through the rationalization of level crossings by constructing limited use subways (LUS), road under bridges (RUBs), and road over bridges (ROBs) in collaboration with the state govt. Anbalagan and other senior officers flagged off a mass awareness rally and the safety publicity mobile vehicle in front of Trichy Junction railway station. The rally proceeded through Central bus terminus. The team distributed safety pamphlets and educated the public on level crossing safety. Later, a vehicle bearing safety awareness banners, along with Railway Protection Force (RPF) visited level crossing gates near Trichy Town, Srirangam, and Thiruverumbur railway stations.

British built road overbridge near Tiruchi Fort station demolished

The British-era road overbridge above the broad gauge railway track near the Tiruchi Fort railway station was demolished by the Southern Railway Construction Organisation on Tuesday to build a new structure in its place. The Southern Railway Construction Organisation had obtained prior permission from the Southern Railway headquarters at Chennai to carry out the demolition work. The new bridge will come up above the Tiruchi - Karur electrified railway section. A line block and a power block for 15 hours was obtained by the Southern Railway Construction Organisation from the Tiruchi Railway Division well in advance to execute the task. The demolition work commenced in the morning as planned with a team of about 60 workers engaged in the task under the supervision of the Southern Railway Construction Organisation officials based at Tiruchi. The Divisional Railway Manager, Tiruchi M.S. Anbalagan inspected the work at the site. Constructed over 150 years ago, the road overbridge was strengthened in 1971, railway sources said. The road overbridge was demolished by using the hydraulic breaker method and the huge debris was cleared from the site of work by using backhoe loaders and heavy tipper type vehicles. A separate team of workers were engaged for debris clearing work later. The new bridge is being jointly constructed by the Southern Railway Construction Organisation and the Tiruchi Corporation. The Southern Railway Construction Organisation will build the new structure in the railway portion at a cost of ₹12 crore. The Tiruchi Corporation is to lay the approach road on either side of the new bridge. The sources further said the length of the two-lane new bridge would be 30 metres. Several trains operating in the Tiruchi - Karur BG section were cancelled and a few others were partially cancelled, diverted and regulated enroute in view of the dismantling of the road overbridge work.

AIADMK stages protest over delay in opening Rajiv Gandhi Bus Terminus

PUDUCHERRY: AIADMK on Tuesday staged a protest demanding the immediate opening of the newly reconstructed Rajiv Gandhi Bus Terminus, which remains non-operational despite being completed and handed over to the municipality nearly four months ago. Led by AIADMK State Secretary A Anbalagan, the demonstrators slammed the territorial administration for its delay in operationalising the facility, constructed at an estimated cost of Rs 33 crore. Protesters said the continued inaccessibility of the terminus was causing severe hardship to daily commuters. Anbalagan pointed out that the Madras High Court had already intervened in the matter, following a dispute over the allotment of over 30 newly built shops within the terminus premises. While the court has issued directions regarding the distribution of the shops, the process remains incomplete, thereby stalling the opening of the bus stand. In the meantime, a temporary bus stand operating at AFT Ground, near the Integrated Court Complex, is allegedly creating a host of problems. Commuters are reportedly struggling with a lack of basic amenities, including toilets—leading some to relieve themselves in nearby residential areas. Residents have raised concerns over deteriorating hygiene and dust pollution, with several cases of respiratory illnesses being reported, particularly among children and the elderly. Anbalagan further criticised the traffic congestion in the vicinity of the court complex, which he said has been aggravated by the makeshift terminal. He also took aim at the delay in the construction of a proposed railway flyover in the same area, alleging that work had not progressed since the Bhoomi Puja held three months ago—partly due to the continued presence of the temporary bus stand. Blaming the municipal administration for its inaction, Anbalagan called upon the chief minister to intervene directly and instruct senior officials to ensure the bus terminus is opened within this month. 'It is deeply regrettable that a completed public facility remains unopened due to political interference and vested interests,' he said. 'The government must clarify who is accountable for this delay and act without further hesitation.'
