West-leading San Diego on alert for 'chaos' vs. Quakes

(Photo credit: Denny Medley-Imagn Images) San Diego FC will try to strengthen their lead atop the Western Conference and keep pace in the Supporters' Shield race on Sunday when they visit the San Jose Earthquakes, who are fighting to hold on to a playoff spot. San Diego (15-7-4, 49 points) entered the weekend with a four-point lead atop the West and in striking distance of the Philadelphia Union's overall points lead. Anders Dreyer scored his 12th goal and contributed his 17th assist -- both team bests -- as San Diego earned a 2-0 road victory over Sporting Kansas City last weekend. Hirving Lozano added his eighth goal. Entering his expansion team's first meeting against its Northern California opponents, San Diego manager Mikey Varas is wary of a San Jose offense that has scored 49 goals -- just one fewer than his own West-leading club. 'It's going to be really important that we are able to find a way to kind of break their man marking and find the right moments to get in behind them and take our chances well, but also be able to defend in those transition moments (against) a front three that's really talented,' Varas said. 'And at the end of the day, making sure that we don't get into a chaotic, completely open game, but that we find moments to control the game and slow it down.' Veteran strikers Josef Martinez and Cristian Arango each have 11 goals for the Earthquakes (8-10-8, 32 points), who earned a surprising 2-1 win at second-place Vancouver last Saturday to move back into the ninth and final playoff spot in the West. The win, which included a controversial penalty converted by Martinez, halted a seven-match winless run in all competitions. Preston Judd scored four minutes into second-half stoppage time on DeJuan Jones' assist to seal San Jose's third MLS win against a team currently occupying a playoff place. Beginning with San Diego, six of the Quakes' last eight MLS opponents are against teams that currently sit in West playoff spots. 'It's a grind right now,' Jones said. 'Every game is super important. We have to continue to get points, especially at home, no matter who we face. We did a really good job against the No. 2 team in the West, Vancouver. So I expect the same this Sunday.'

Lozano, Dreyer help carry San Diego past Sporting KC for 7th win in last 10 MLS contests

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Hirving Lozano scored a goal and Anders Dreyer found the back of the net and recorded another assist and San Diego FC continued road surge beating Sporting KC 2-0 on Saturday. It was the fifth straight road win for San Diego (15-7-4) and its eighth road win in its inaugural season. San Diego is 7-2-1 in its last 10 MLS contests. Pending the outcome of the San Jose, Vancouver FC match, San Diego could end the night by itself atop the Western Conference ahead of Vancouver. Kansas City (6-13-6) failed to score again against the Western Conference's top teams as it was coming off a 3-0 loss to Vancouver on July 26. Lozano scored in the 23rd minute after taking a short pass from Dreyer — the league leader in assists — and put it in with a right-footed shot from distance from the center of the box for a 1-0 lead. In the 70th minute, Dreyer punched a left-footed shot from the center of the box to seal it. San Diego became the first team to reach 50 goals scored in the MLS regular season this year. ___ AP soccer: The Associated Press

MoreHow to Watch Sporting KC vs San Diego When: Saturday, August 9, 2025 Time: 8:30 PM ET TV Channel: FOX Deportes, FOX Sports 1 Live Stream: Fubo (try for free) San Diego FC has wasted no time in making an impact on Major League Soccer and leads the Western Conference as it prepares to resume its campaign with a trip to Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. The MLS season was briefly put on hold to allow those teams competing in the Leagues Cup to conduct their business. Mikey Varas' men were one of the 18 teams hoping to land the title, though they failed to reach the second stage of the competition and return to domestic matters this weekend. Sporting KC didn't participate in the League Cup due to their involvement in the CONCACAF Champions Cup earlier this year. That means interim coach Kerry Zavagnin has gone a fortnight without seeing his team in action, hopeful they won't suffer from any ring rust in their return to the pitch this weekend. The Wizards are currently three games without a win and sit 13th in MLS' Western Conference, six points off the play-off places as things stand. At the other end of the table, just one point separates San Diego from the Vancouver Whitecaps in second. A win for Saturday's guest would be enough to ensure Varas' side finishes this weekend atop the summit, with San Diego having won its last four league fixtures on the road.
