CM to launch surprise inspections from June

Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Monday informed officials that he would begin surprise inspections of government schemes and services starting next month. While reviewing government schemes and public services at the Secretariat, Naidu discussed public feedback with Chief Secretary K Vijayanand and other senior officials. 'Surprise inspections could begin any time after June 12 across the state,' said Naidu. The Chief Minister is reviewing public feedback weekly across four departments. This week, he analysed feedback on ration distribution, Deepam 2 (the free cooking gas scheme), Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), and panchayat services. With the coalition government nearing its one-year mark, Naidu emphasised the need for complete public satisfaction in all departments regarding service delivery. While some departments have shown improvement, services such as APSRTC still require significant quality enhancement, he noted. Regarding Deepam 2, Naidu announced that the subsidy for three cooking gas cylinders, provided annually to beneficiaries, will now be credited in full upfront. Beneficiaries can claim the cylinders as needed, but the government will ensure that the entire subsidy amount is transferred at once. He emphasised that no agency or intermediary should collect any additional money from beneficiaries. Although West Godavari district emerged as the most satisfactory in terms of ration distribution and delivery in feedback, Naidu acknowledged that issues persist in some areas that need to be addressed. He suggested directly crediting the subsidy amount to beneficiaries' accounts to prevent delivery agents from demanding money during gas delivery. Given that public satisfaction with APSRTC remains below expectations, Naidu directed officials to enhance the quality and efficiency of its services. Regarding panchayat services, Naidu said that 60 per cent of respondents confirmed regular household waste collection. He noted that garbage collection in rural areas has improved and announced that Development of Women and Children in Rural Areas (DWCRA) women would soon be engaged in managing wet waste and compost production. Naidu underscored the importance of data analytics in improving government services, stating that it enables departments to assess their performance from the grassroots level. He said that proper analysis of public feedback could lead to transformative improvements in service delivery. Naidu instructed senior officials across all departments to leverage analytics tools to enhance their services and performance. On WhatsApp governance, the Chief Minister said currently, 325 services are being delivered through WhatsApp Governance. Since the launch of 'Mana Mitra' on WhatsApp, 4.5 million people have used these services successfully. The target is to expand to 500 services by June 12, and preparations are underway. Regarding the proposed Drone City, he said it would be established on 300 acres in the Orvakal Industrial Node. Phase 1 will cover 116 acres, and 38 companies have already expressed interest in partnering. The Detailed Project Report (DPR) is ready, and the tendering process will be completed by June 12, the Chief Minister added.

Wage revision to RTC contract workers demanded

Rajamahendravaram: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is allegedly failing to pay contract workers as per the official circular, paying them only Rs 8,000 per month instead of the legally mandated wages, said BVN Poornima Raju, East Godavari District Secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). He alleged that contract workers are facing severe exploitation, with a deduction of Rs 500 for every single day of leave taken, and the authorities are neglecting labour laws meant to protect workers. He made these remarks while submitting a representation to the Depot Manager along with PBS Raju, Superintendent (Mechanical), on behalf of the APSRTC Contract Workers Union (affiliated with CITU). The representation demanded job security for contract workers, protection from harassment by contractors and officials, and compliance with labour laws. He stated that the law mandates a minimum wage of Rs 26,000 per month for contract workers, along with benefits like Provident Fund (PF), Employees' State Insurance (ESI), pension, social security, and job security. The union also demanded that the contract workers receive appointment letters and that their wages should be deposited directly into their bank accounts. They further demand the need for maternity leave for female workers, as well as casual, earned, and weekly leaves, as per legal provisions. S Venkateswara Rao, CITU leader from AP Paper Mill, and other members of the APSRTC Contract Workers Union were also present during the submission of the representation.

Pirated copy of Mohanlal-Shobana's 'Thudarum' played on tourist bus; filmmaker plans for legal action

Mohanlal and Shobana 's latest crime thriller 'Thudarum', has been enjoying a strong run at the box office with positive reviews. However, despite its success, the film has recently fallen victim to piracy. According to a report by Onmanorama, a pirated copy of the film was being played openly inside a tourist bus traveling from Vagamon to Malappuram in Kerala. A student on the bus noticed the illegal screening and sent a video of it to actor Binu Pappu on social media, who is part of the film's cast. The visuals of the pirated screening have since circulated online. Reportedly, producer M. Renjith expressed his disappointment over the piracy incident and confirmed that legal action will be taken against those responsible. He shared that piracy not only harms the film's commercial prospects but also affects the livelihoods of many people involved in the production and distribution of the movie. The bus involved was identified as registered in Malappuram district, and authorities are expected to investigate the matter further. This is not the first time such a situation has happened, last year, a similar case occurred with the Telugu film 'Thandel' starring Naga Chaitanya and Sai Pallavi which was also illegally screened on a bus. A high-quality pirated copy of the film was shockingly screened on Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) buses. Speaking of 'Thudarum', directed by Tharun Moorthy , the film tells the story of Shanmugham, aka Benz played by Mohanlal, a humble taxi driver living a peaceful life in the hill town of Ranni with his wife Lalitha portrayed by Shobana and their children. The film's plot thickens when Benz's beloved black Ambassador car is seized by the police after a mechanic uses it for smuggling illegal goods. The movie released on April 25 has completed 10 days of its release and minted over Rs 71 crore in India.

Six nabbed for theft at APSRTC depot manager's house in Kurnool

Kurnool police arrested six persons, including five minors, on Saturday, for stealing valuables from the house of an Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) depot manager in Kurnool, a few days back. The accused committed the offence by learning to break open the locks of houses through YouTube, the police said. The theft took place at the house of Sardar Hussain, who is Depot-I manager, and resides in Sai Vaibhav Nagar in the city. The incident happened when Mr. Hussain had gone to Hyderabad to attend a function along with his family members. Superintendent of Police (SP) Vikrant Patel said that the main accused, Shaik Shavali, who works in a dhaba, along with the five others, learned the trick of opening locks from YouTube. They brought oil, a saw and an iron rod and reached Sai Vaibhav Nagar on two motorcycles around 1 a.m. and found Mr. Hussain's house locked. They opened the lock and stole 27 tola of gold ornaments worth ₹20 lakh and 35 tola silver, and distributed the stolen items among themselves. The next day, on April 13, the depot manager lodged a complaint with the police. The six were finally caught on Saturday near Central University at Nandyal checkpost and the entire stolen items recovered from them. The SP said that two of the minors were involved in two theft cases earlier. The accused are school dropouts, he added. Mr. Vikrant Patel asked the citizens to utilise the Locked House Monitoring System (LHMS), instal CCTVs in their houses, and also inform the police about movement of suspicious people in residential localities.
