Andreescu among the Canadian casualties in French Open qualifying
PARIS - Bianca Andreescu's comeback hit a snag Wednesday when she was bounced from the second round of the French Open qualifying tournament. The 17th seed from Mississauga, Ont., had match point against Japan's Nao Hibino up 5-3 in the second set. But she failed to convert, and Hibino came back for a 2-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 victory on the clay courts of Roland Garros that took two hours 31 minutes to complete. Andreescu was one of three Canadians eliminated from qualifying Wednesday at the second Grand Slam of the tennis season. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW Germany's Tamara Korpatsch cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over 24th seed Marina Stakusic of Mississauga, and 10th seed Rebeka Masarova of Switzerland was a comfortable 6-0, 6-3 winner over Carson Branstine, a Californian who represents Canada internationally. The 24-year-old Andreescu, a former world No. 4 and the 2019 U.S. Open champion, is back on the court after a nearly six-month layoff after she underwent emergency appendix surgery in February. She has had some success this year on clay — which she has said is not her strongest surface — including a run to the fourth round of the WTA 1000 Italian Open earlier this month. Rising star Victoria Mboko of Toronto, the last Canadian alive in qualifying, plays a second-round match Thursday against Kathinka von Deichmann of Liechtenstein. Elsewhere, Felix Auger-Aliassime of Montreal was set to face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard of France in the second round of the Hamburg Open. Auger-Aliassime, seeded sixth in Hamburg, is using the ATP 500 tournament as a tune-up for the French Open after he withdrew from the Italian Open with a sore back. WTA Star Bianca Andreescu Says She Hasn't Touched Alcohol in Six Months
Canadian WTA star and the 2019 US Open champion, Bianca Andreescu opened up about her six-month journey of sobriety, the physical toll of past injuries, and how she has slowly been finding herself. 'Being in Rome now, it's so freakin' difficult,' said Andreescu in a candid interview with the WTA. 'But I know that it makes me feel good. I haven't touched alcohol in six months. Six months sober, and I'm going to continue with that,' she said proudly. Advertisement Andreescu has been having a difficult year, although she walked away from Madrid Open with a lot of positives. Her Rome campaign has also begun strongly with a dominating 6-0, 6-3 victory. However, her battles with mental health as well as perennial injury issues, have kept her away from the sport for long durations. She's now slowly and steadily climbing the long road back to recovery. Bianca Andreescu (CAN) waves while leaving the court after her match against Jasmine Paolini (ITA)© Geoff Burke-Imagn Images 'A lot of people have been complimenting my body,'' Andreescu said with a laugh. 'I'm becoming leaner, too, with age but for me, most of my injuries have come from being a bit too overweight. Too much stress on my joints and ligaments,' she said. 'Becoming lean has been one of my main goals,' added Andreescu. The Canadian also said that she had started having serious doubts on her career after persisting injury breaks. Advertisement 'I have my days where I go, `Maybe this is just how my career's supposed to go.' But I do have faith in the positives,' she said. 'I think it's always a constant learning experience for me. Some players might have other challenges, maybe my challenge is my body.' Andreescu had positive words to say heading deeper into the clay season and also admitted that she is now playing pain free and is looking forward to the rest of the season. 'Coming off of a surgery, I think that takes months and months to fully regenerate but I feel good. I have no pain, which is the most important thing. I feel like I have a great mindset going into this new season for me', she said. 'But I say that every season,' she added with a laugh. NBA Legend Kobe Bryant's Interview Made WTA Star Bianca Andreescu Quit Alcohol
Former U.S. Open champion, Bianca Andreescu is making headlines not just for her comeback performance on the court, but for the profound personal changes she's embraced off of it. Following her first victory in the French Open qualifiers, Andreescu opened up during her post-match press conference about a powerful moment of inspiration that led her to quit alcohol — a decision she attributes to a single interview with NBA legend Kobe Bryant. Advertisement 'You know when you watch something or read something, and something just clicks in you sometimes,' Andreescu explained to reporters. 'I was like, 'Okay, no more alcohol.' Now I have no desire — it's a good feeling." The 24-year-old, who faced a series of injuries and setbacks since her breakout 2019 season, has spoken candidly in the past about the mental and emotional toll that professional tennis can take. This time, she shared how Bryant's disciplined mindset and commitment to health struck a chord with her at the right moment in her life. Bianca Andreescu (CAN) waves while leaving the court after her match against Jasmine Paolini (ITA)© Geoff Burke-Imagn Images 'Before I never looked at myself as Bianca Andreescu, the person,' said Andreescu. 'I always saw myself as Bianca Andreescu the tennis player and I identified myself too much with that and so when I would win, it was okay, and when I would lose it was the end of the world.' Advertisement Andreescu has said that she has not touched alcohol in over 6 months, and is currently focusing her entire attention on getting back to the best of her game on the WTA tour. As she battles past the qualifiers, it remains to be seen if she makes it into the main draw of the Roland Garros. Related: WTA Star Bianca Andreescu Says She Hasn't Touched Alcohol in Six Months
