Andrew Cristillo was killed in a crash earlier this month, his family has launched a petition for stricter laws and penalties, calling it 'Andrews Law.' The family of an Ontario man who was killed in a crash involving an alleged repeat dangerous driver has launched a petition calling for legal changes in the wake of his death. 'This tragedy should have been prevented,' said Andrew Cristillo's younger brother, Jordan, saying his family is hoping even in death, the genial and humorous husband and father of three can make a positive difference for others through proposed changes they're calling 'Andrew's Law.' Jordan was speaking just outside the courthouse in Oshawa on Friday, where the accused driver, 18-year-old Jaiwin Kirubananthan, appeared at a bail hearing. (CTV News) 'When we're allowing dangerous drivers on the road, we're gambling with other people's lives. That's why we're petitioning to bring forward the Andrew Law, where dangerous drivers that are charged are no longer allowed on the road,' Jordan said. 'It's a privilege, not a right.' Cristillo's wife, Christina, pushed out the windshield with her feet to get the three kids, 7-year-old Leah, 6-year-old Chloe, and 4-year-old Ella, out of the car, her family said. They're recovering in hospital from what the family describes as 'life-altering injuries.' 'Long overdue': premier The family's petition appears to have found support in Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who was riding in a vehicle that was hit allegedly by Kirubananthan in an earlier incident. Ford appeared to give his blessings after CTV News asked Thursday about mandatory restrictions pending trial for those receiving a dangerous driving charge. It's just terrible. They need to have their licenses taken away.' Ford also described the January crash from his perspective, saying the other driver was driving over 200 km/h and swooped across three lanes of traffic, saying he was 'lucky, quite literally, by inches.' The premier said he had been in touch with Cristillo's family and said he had to stop himself before saying more to avoid affecting the ongoing legal proceedings. 'Just frustrating, heartbreaking, and I just give condolences and our prayers go out to the family, and I know the people of Ontario will support him any way we can,' he said. (MTO) Back in January, Kirubananthan was also charged with stunt driving under the Highway Traffic Act and later dangerous driving for hitting an OPP cruiser carrying Premier Doug Ford on Highway 401. The stunt driving charge carried with it a 30-day driving ban, but Kirubananthan regained the legal ability to drive in part because he was issued a summons for the dangerous driving charge instead of being put through a bail hearing where a judge can order driving restrictions. Family wants mandatory driving bans The Cristillo petition is calling for those driving bans to be mandatory after a dangerous driving charge, saying that could have prevented Cristillo's death. 'This was not an unavoidable accident; it was the direct result of a system that repeatedly allows dangerous drivers another chance,' the petition says. The petition also calls for 'life sentences or charges equivalent to murder when dangerous driving results in the loss of life' and 'lifetime bans for extreme dangerous driving.' Criminal lawyer Monte MacGregor, who has been following the case, said the proposal for mandatory bans is similar to what is issued at the side of the road for stunt driving and drunk driving cases. 'To me, it's a reasonable measure that affords us the security of knowing, okay, you're allowed out of jail, but we're trying to protect society from any further offences,' MacGregor said. Barry Fox, Kirubananthan's lawyer, told reporters outside the Oshawa courthouse that his client's family, who attended the hearing, was 'very concerned' about what happened. Bail decision postponed At the time of the Aug. 3 crash, the OPP said Kirubananthan was arrested after fleeing the scene. A decision was expected Friday on whether to release him on bail, and after some legal arguments, that decision was postponed until August 25. An online fundraiser has received more than $455,000 in donations as of Friday afternoon, and the petition has received over 1,000 signatures, according to its host,

'A huge community has a huge hole in it,' says family of father killed in crash north of Toronto
When Jordan Cristillo remembers his brother Andrew, who died tragically in a car crash near Whitchurch-Stouffville earlier this month, he thinks of him as "a gift" — a loving father and a great friend. In the wake of his death, the Cristillo family is picking up the pieces and trying to ensure other families don't have to endure the pain they're feeling. "It's a tragedy that he's no longer with us," Cristillo said Friday outside a court hearing for Jaiwin Victor Kirubananthan, 18, of Oshawa, who has been changed with multiple offences, including dangerous driving causing death and bodily harm. "A huge community has a hole in it," Cristillo said. Andrew leaves behind three young daughters and his wife, Christina, Cristillo said. "Christina … now has to battle cancer without her best friend by her side." A GoFundMe campaign started by the family has amassed over $450,000 in contributions as of Friday afternoon. The support his family has received "means the world to us, it gives us strength," said Cristillo. According to police, the crash occurred on Highway 48 outside of Whitchurch-Stouffville, when the car Kirubananthan was driving collided with the Cristillos' family car. Andrew was pronounced dead at the scene, while police say Christina and their three daughters were transported to the hospital with injuries. The three children are currently undergoing treatment for "life altering injuries" at SickKids, according to the GoFundMe. According to police, Kirubananthan was also charged in January 2025 in connection with a crash involving Ontario Premier Doug Ford. "It's heart-wrenching when you talk to the family ... Everyone has to pitch in and help this family. It's terrible," said Ford, when asked about the Cristillos' crash at an unrelated news conference on Friday. "And this person being able to get out there and drive, you know ... I wish I could say what's on my mind right now, but I think people know how I feel and everyone else in Ontario feels about this person ... just reckless, careless." Cristillo says he intends to petition for a new law to be put into place that would see more restrictions and tougher sentencing for those charged with dangerous driving. A bail hearing was set for Friday but has been pushed back until Aug. 25, as the Justice of the Peace said more deliberation time was needed.

'Just reckless': Ford comments on driver charged in fatal crash, collision with OPP vehicle transporting him
Ontario Premier Doug Ford says a driver accused in two crashes this year, one that killed a father of three in August and another that hit a car transporting the premier himself in January, was "just reckless, careless." Speaking at unrelated news conference on Thursday, Ford commented the connection between the two crashes, saying it's "heart-wrenching." The crash on Aug. 3 in Whitchurch-Stouffville left Andrew Cristillo, 35, dead at the scene and injured his wife, Christina Cristillo, and their three daughters. "As far as I'm concerned, he shouldn't have been driving," Ford said. "It's heart wrenching when you talk to the family... Everyone has to pitch in and help this family. It's terrible," Ford added. Police say the accused is the same person charged earlier this year after a car hit an OPP vehicle transporting Ford on Highway 401. That collision happened as Ford was on his way back from an announcement at Darlington Nuclear Generating Station. The vehicle got "sideswiped," Ford said later that day. Ford acknowledged the case is before the courts, but commented: "And this person being able to get out there and drive, you know ... I wish I could say what's on my mind right now, but I think people know how I feel and everyone else in Ontario feels about this person... just reckless, careless." The premier added that he would support some restrictions for drivers after they have been charged criminally with offences such as dangerous driving. Decision on bail expected Friday The driver, an 18-year-old Oshawa man, is expected to learn on Friday whether he will be granted bail after he was charged in the Aug. 3 crash. He has been charged with dangerous driving causing death, three counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, failing to remain at an accident resulting in death and public mischief. Ontario Provincial Police say the collision involving two vehicles happened on Highway 48 between St. John Sideroad and Ballantrae Commons. According to the OPP, the driver of the other vehicle in the crash fled the scene but was found and arrested a short time later. As for the crash on Jan. 8, Ford said: "He hit me right on my door, going over 200 km/h. We didn't even know what hit us. We're just driving straight and he swooped across three lanes from an on-ramp. "Just reckless, careless stunt driving. We were lucky literally by inches and he gets back in the car and acts like an idiot, driving recklessly." "He was an amazing, hands-on dad to our girls, always playing with them, teaching them, and making them laugh until their cheeks hurt. Andrew had a wicked sense of humour and a way of lighting up every room he walked into — the life of the party, the friend everyone wanted by their side, the one who could make you smile even on your worst day." Cristillo says her three daughters were sent to SickKids for treatment of life-altering injuries. She said she is fighting breast cancer and must now raise their daughters alone while coping with her own health challenges.

An 18-year-old man from Oshawa, Ont., who was recently charged in a collision that killed a father of three is the same person facing a dangerous driving charge in a crash involving Premier Doug Ford, Ontario Provincial Police say. A GoFundMe page by Christina Cristillo identifies her husband Andrew Cristillo as the victim of the fatal crash on Aug. 3 in Whitchurch-Stouffville, which also left her and their three daughters injured. 'He was an amazing, hands-on dad to our girls, always playing with them, teaching them, and making them laugh until their cheeks hurt,' she wrote. 'Andrew had a wicked sense of humour and a way of lighting up every room he walked into – the life of the party, the friend everyone wanted by their side, the one who could make you smile even on your worst day. His greatest wish was for his family to be safe, happy, and cared for, and he worked tirelessly to give our daughters the best life and future he possibly could.'
