Photo: Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi At least two people were killed in a fresh barrage of Russian drones and missiles on Ukraine, with Poland scrambling fighter jets as a drone attack was recorded on the western city of Lviv in the early hours of Saturday. The Polish Operational Command stated on X that it had scrambled a standby pair of fighter jets to respond to the potential threat, adding that it was 'monitoring the current situation' with its forces remaining 'in full readiness for immediate response'. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Telegram that Russia had used 26 missiles and 597 drones in the overnight attack, targeting several Ukrainian regions at once, including the Kharkiv and Sumy regions in the east and Chernivtsi and Lviv regions in the west. Two people were killed in Chernivtsi, Zelensky said, and around 20 people were injured across Ukraine. The pace of Russian attacks on Ukraine requires 'quick decisions', Zelensky added, urging the international community to introduce additional sanctions against Russia, including 'tough secondary sanctions against anyone who helps the Russians produce drones and make money from oil'. 'The war can only be stopped by force,' Zelensky wrote 'We expect not just signals from our partners, but actions that will save lives.' Russia has ramped up its aerial assaults on Ukraine in recent months, with barrages of several hundred drones becoming increasingly common. On Wednesday, Russia launched its largest single airstrike of the war so far, attacking Ukraine with 728 drones, seven cruise missiles and six Kinzhal ballistic missiles.

Russia launched a new barrage of drones and missiles in an overnight attack on Ukraine on Saturday, targeting the west of the country and killing at least two people in the city of Chernivtsi on the border with Romania. Western Ukrainian cities of Lviv, Lutsk, and Chernivtsi suffered the most due to the Russian attacks, and other Ukrainian regions were also hit, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said. "Russia continues to escalate its terror, launching another barrage of hundreds of drones and missiles, damaging residential areas, killing and injuring civilians," Sybiha said in a post on X, reiterating the call for stronger sanctions against Moscow. "Russia's war machine produces hundreds of means of terror per day. Its scale poses a threat not only to Ukraine, but to the entire transatlantic community." Ruslan Zaparaniuk, the governor of the Chernivetskyi region, said that two people were killed and 14 others wounded as Russian drones and a missile struck the city, located about 40 kilometers (24 miles) from Ukraine's border with Romania. Several fires broke out across the city, and residential houses and administrative buildings were damaged, regional officials said. In the city of Lviv, on Ukraine's border with Poland, 46 residential houses, a university building, the city's courts, and about 20 buildings housing small and medium-sized businesses were damaged in the attack, mayor Andriy Sadovyi said.

Talks aim to bring York 'sisterhood' link with Lviv closer
A partnership between York and the Ukrainian city of Lviv has moved a step closer, following calls to complete a process which first got under way three years April 2022, two months after Russia invaded Ukraine, councillors in York approved the adoption of Lviv in western Ukraine as a "sister city".But at a recent meeting, delays in implementing the link between the two cities was branded by opposition councillors as an "embarrassing failure".However, it has since been confirmed that talks between City of York Council's Labour leader Claire Douglas and Andriy Sadovyi, the mayor of Lviv, were due to be held, though the date had yet to be decided. The completion of the "sisterhood" process would see both cities work together on culture, education, business and other areas, according to the Sister Cities International organisation. Ukrainian embassy officials were understood to have met Douglas, as well as Katie Lomas, City of York Council's Labour finance and human rights spokesperson, earlier in said she now looked forward to speaking to Lviv's mayor about how the two cities could work closer in the future."Our immediate focus is on continuing to demonstrate our solidarity with Ukraine," she explained."This includes offering practical support for our Ukrainian guests here in York, extending our heartfelt thoughts and prayers for the people of Ukraine - both those here in York, who are so far from their loved ones, and those in Ukraine who are bravely coping with the most unimaginable hardships." 'Stronger ties' According to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, Lib Dem councillor Chris Cullwick had welcomed movement on the link between York and the Ukrainian said his party had "been pushing for stronger ties with Lviv since the full-scale invasion began", including tabling the original motion back in 2022 calling for a "formal sisterhood" between the two cities."We've repeatedly urged the administration to follow through, so it's good to see our efforts starting to bear fruit. We now want to see this momentum continue," Cullwick has a population of just over 700,000 people and is situated about 70 miles (112km) away from the Polish centre is a Unesco World Heritage Site and, like York, Lviv is designated a Unesco Creative City, recognised for its literary 2022, 416 Ukrainians have arrived and settled in York through the Homes for Ukraine scheme.
