Lava launches entry-level Bold N1 and N1 Pro in India next week

Lava is launching a new phone series in India next week – the two Bold phones are sub-₹7,000 4G Androids. The new series consists of two models: a Pro that runs Android 14 and a vanilla model that runs Android 14 Go Edition. Lava Bold N1 Pro That and the price are the most important differences – the Lava Bold N1 costs ₹6,000 and will launch on Amazon India on June 4 (Wednesday). Go Edition is designed to be light on resources, which is important when you only have 4GB of RAM. That's not that bad, actually, some Go Edition phones from this year start at 3GB. Lava Bold N1 The Lava Bold N1 Pro is priced at ₹6,800, but you can get a ₹100 discount during the launch period. This model is coming on June 2 (Monday), also launching on Amazon India. The Pro runs full-fat Android, but it's also on the older Android 14 version. Both phones will receive 1 OS update and 2 years of security patches, but that would only bring them up to Android 15 – which will soon become the 'old version'. The Bold N1 Pro is powered by the Unisoc T606 and a 5,000mAh battery The Bold N1 Pro has the more powerful chipset – an Unisoc T606 (28nm, 8x Cortex-A55 @ 1.6GHz, PowerVR GE8322 GPU) – while the regular N1 uses an unnamed Unisoc chip. The Pro also has 4GB of RAM, which is more limiting with full Android (remember that Go Edition also uses lighter apps). The Pro does have more storage – 128GB out of the box, expandable up to 256GB, while the vanilla N1 only has 64GB. We mentioned above that the choice between full Android and Go Edition paired with the price will be the main deciding factor between the two models. Lava Bold N1 Pro highlights And it will, but the Lava Bold N1 Pro also features better cameras – a 50MP unit on the back and 8MP on the front, compared to a basic 13MP on the back and 5MP on the front for the vanilla N1. The N1 has a slightly bigger 6.75' LCD, the Pro has a 6.67' panel. Both have 720p+ resolution, but the Pro edges ahead in refresh rate – 120Hz vs. 90Hz. Both phones have side-mounted fingerprint readers and face unlock as an option (the FP reader is more than twice as fast, though). Lava Bold N1 with a 5,000mAh/10W battery and 13MP/5MP cameras Both phones have 5,000mAh batteries, but the Pro supports faster charging in theory. It ships with a 10W charger in the box, but it supports up to 18W. The vanilla model doesn't get an in-box charger and tops out at 10W. The two N1 models are rated IP54 for basic protection against dust and water splashes. They benefit from Lava's Service@Home, i.e. a repair technician will come to you instead of you having to go to a service center, plus a 1-year warranty. Lava Bold N1 Pro in: Titanium Gold • Stealth Black Lava Bold N1 in: Radiant Black • Sparkling Ivory While they launch next week, you can already bookmark the Amazon India pages for both phones – here's the Lava Bold N1 and here's the Lava Bold N1 Pro.

Android Automotive Will Let Video Streaming Apps Switch to Audio-Only When Driving

Google is preparing to let video apps on Android Automotive switch to audio-only mode when the car is in motion. If your vehicle is not in neutral or park, you won't be able to watch the game, but you'll still be able to listen to the commentary. Currently, video apps on cars with Android built-in only work when the vehicle is parked. According to Google, this update is starting as a test for cars running Android 14 and newer with Android Automotive. App developers will need to add this function themselves. Google also says video apps are coming soon to Android Auto. This means that the audio-only option could be added to those apps as well, as reported by PhoneArena. If users can watch videos when parked using Android Auto, having the option to continue listening as they drive could be wonderful. Another welcome update is for Spotify users, who will soon be able to start a "Jam" session in the car. Everybody gets to play their tunes one by one. The rollout is still in its early stages, and the full set of updates will depend on app developers and car manufacturers.

Fairphone has some bad and good news for its fans

Fairphone, the Dutch company behind the modular Android smartphone with the same name, has just shared important information about one of its devices that should have received a major update last at tech-savvy customers, Fairphone smartphones feature modular design, which means their parts can be easily replaced for upgrades or in case of malfunction. Of course, all replacement parts are provided by Fairphone, along with the of the older smartphones launched by the Dutch company, Fairphone 4, should have received the Android 14 update last year. However, Fairphone confirmed back in November that the update is no longer coming in 2024 and that customers who bought the phone should wait until this year. After leaving its community in the dark for five months, Fairphone has finally issued a statement regarding the state of the Android 14 update for Fairphone 4, and things aren't looking well. Long story short, Fairphone 4 will no longer receive Android 14 . That's the bad news. The good news is Fairphone plans to upgrade the device directly to Android 15. However, it's unclear when the new update will arrive, as Fairphone claims 'it's still a complicated process with multiple partners involved.' Fairphone 4 was launched back in 2021 | Image credit: Fairphone As to why Fairphone decided to quit working on Android 14 for Fairphone 4 and bring the phone directly to Android 15 , it's easy to guess. After hitting a snag with the development of the promised update, it has become obvious that if these issues would eventually overcome, Android 14 would be released around the same time Google launches Android 15 (or even later). It makes much more sense to cut your losses and redirect all your resources into the most recent version of the OS, and that's Android 15 . – The Fairphone Team, May 2025 Besides informing its customers that Fairphone 4 will no longer receive Android 14 and instead will be upgraded to Android 15 , the Dutch company also promised to expand its support team to shorten the wait times. It remains to be seen how things will turn out, but if you own a Fairphone 4, don't get your hopes too high.

Fairphone 4 is not getting Android 14 after all

Fairphone, the sustainable Dutch smartphone brand, was supposed to bring Android 14 to its nearly four-year-old Fairphone 4, but that is not happening. A company representative confirmed the news via a post on the Fairphone forum. Fairphone planned to ship the Android 14 update to users by the start of 2025, but the software team ran into unexpected issues, including factors outside of their control. Instead of continuing its uphill battle, Fairphone is now shifting its focus and resources to deliver Android 15 for the Fairphone 4. The company is not ready to share a detailed launch timeline just yet but it will post more updates as it gets closer to launch. Source
