Angad Cheema jumps into the lead

Angad Cheema shot a three-under 69 in the third round to lead the field with an overall 11-under 205 in the Rs.1 crore Coal India Open at the Kensville Golf and Country Club on Thursday. A champion of the last PGTI event in April this year, the 35-year-old Angad had a bogey on the 10th but followed with four birdies, to gain a one-shot lead over overnight leader Amardeep Malik. 'I played steady, and hit the greens in regulation. My putter was hot on the back-nine that helped me sink a lot of long putts,' said Angad who had gained considerable experience by competing in the qualifying event of The Open in United Kingdom. Udayan Mane continued to be spectacular with his second successive round of 66, a remarkable change of fortunes after a disheartening 78 in the first round. Angad Cheema emerges leader in round three

Last Updated: Ahmedabad, Aug 7 (PTI) Chandigarh golfer Angad Cheema remained steadfast in his approach, returning a three-under 69, to move into the lead in round three of the Rs 1 crore India Open here on Thursday. Angad, who had rounds of 69 and 67 on the first two days at the Kensville Golf & Country Club, has a three-day aggregate of 11-under 205 going into the final day. Noida golfer Amardeep Malik (69-65-72) carded an even-par 72 in the penultimate round to occupy second position at a total of 10-under 206. Another Chandigarh golfer Karandeep Kochhar (69-70-69), carded a 69 to be placed third. Pune's Udayan Mane, who began the week with a 78, fired a 66 for the second straight day to make a brilliant comeback on the leaderboard. He gained 11 spots on Thursday to be placed tied-fourth at six-under 210 along with Delhi's Arjun Prasad (69). Delhi-based Rakshit Dahiya, the only amateur to make the cut, ended the day in 10th position at two-under 214 following a round of 71. Local golfer Varun Parikh came up with a 72 to be tied 13th at even-par 216. Angad Cheema, who was overnight second being two shots off the lead, made a solid start making pars all through the front-nine. The 35-year-old, winner of the last PGTI event in April this year, began the back-nine with a bogey on the 10th but came roaring back with four birdies, including three from a range of 10 to 15 feet. 'I played a steady round today hitting all greens in regulation. My putter got hot on the back-nine that helped me sink a lot of long putts. That was the big difference between my front-nine and back-nine," said Cheema. 'Playing the qualifying event of The Open in the UK this summer, was a memorable experience and gave me great international exposure as I competed in a strong field at a links course in conditions totally different from what we're used to here in India. I would say it benefitted my game a lot. 'Taking a break from golf during the off-season has also helped me come back fresh and eager to perform well," he added. Amardeep Malik, the overnight leader by two shots, made three birdies and three bogeys on Thursday to drop to second position. Malik is still within touching distance of the lead being just one shot back. Amardeep Malik surges ahead by two strokes

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Ahmedabad, Aug 6 (PTI) Amardeep Malik's hot putter helped him surge ahead by two strokes in round two of the India Open at the Kensville Golf & Country Club here on Wednesday. The Noida-based Amardeep (69-65) carded seven-under 65 to total 10-under 134 for the week in the Rs 1 crore prize money event. Angad Cheema (69-67) of Chandigarh, who was the overnight joint leader along with Malik, posted a 67 on day two to be placed second at eight-under 136. Delhi's Shaurya Bhattacharya (71-66) shot a 66 to be placed third at seven-under 137. The halfway cut fell at five-over 149. Fifty-three professionals and one amateur made the cut. Amardeep began the day with a 15-feet birdie conversion on the 10th. He then went on to pick up four more birdies from a range of eight to 20 feet on the back-nine. Amardeep's hot streak with the putter continued on the front-nine as he sank birdies from 25 feet and a mammoth 50 feet on the first and third holes respectively. Malik, a two-time winner on the PGTI, capped his round with a bogey and birdie on the fifth and sixth. 'I tried to hit the safest shot possible today and as a result found most fairways and greens. I guess I also got lucky on the tough greens today as I converted a lot of long putts," Amardeep said. 'One has to be careful with the speed because the speed is really tricky on these greens. I think sometimes a player gets into a zone where it just feels easy. 'I haven't played a lot of golf in the last two and a half months as I recently became a father. But I'm just glad to be back on the course and competing in the very first event after the resumption of the season." Angad Cheema, who recently played the qualifying event for The Open in the UK, came up with a 40-feet eagle conversion on the sixth along with five birdies and two bogeys. Delhi's Rakshit Dahiya (72-71), the only amateur in the field, made the cut as he was placed an impressive tied 12th at a total of one-under 143. Local lad Varun Parikh (74-70) was a further shot back in tied 15th position. Varun was the only Ahmedabad-based player to make the cut.
