Powys wins haul of medals at record-breaking Urdd Eisteddfod
Powys' talented young people have won a haul of medals at Europe's largest touring youth festival at Margam Park. The Eisteddfod yr Urdd bowed out on Saturday (May 31) after another record-breaking year, including more Welsh learners than ever, enjoying and competing in over 400 competitions at the Welsh youth festival. Across the three Pavilions, children and young people from Powys competed and won a total of 15 medals, including first places for Llangadfan's Ysgol Cwm Banwy, Ysgol Pontrobert, Newtown's Ysgol Penygloddfa and Machynlleth's Ysgol Bro Hyddgen. Ysgol Cwm Banwy headteacher Betsan Llwyd said: "Considering that we are such a small school and have won nationally, we are so proud especially after last year's successes as well." Among the Powys winners were Ysgol Pontrobert siblings Ani and Jac's Cerdd Dant duet, Ysgol Penygloddfa's Welsh learners choir, Ysgol Bro Hyddgen's recitation group and Ysgol Cwm Banwy's folk dance. Montgomeryshire won more than 30 medals in the arts and craft competitions earning north Powys seventh place in the Eisteddfod medals table. Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd pupil Isabelle Foskett, 10, won first and second place medals for her textile and print artworks. "I feel really happy," the 10-year-old Newtown pupil said. "When I found out I had won again I was very shocked. It's amazing.

Lebanon: Israeli jets bombard Beirut suburb on eve of Eid al-Adha
Israeli air strikes rocked the southern suburbs of Lebanon's capital on Thursday night, on the eve of the Eid al-Adha holiday, marking the latest major violation of the November ceasefire agreement. Lebanese news agency Ani said Beirut was hit by about 10 strikes, two of which were "very violent" and saw thousands fleeing their homes. The Israeli army said it had struck the southern suburbs targeting forces belonging to Hezbollah's "air unit". About an hour before the strikes began, Avichay Adraee, the Arabic-speaking spokesman for the Israeli army, told residents to evacuate a radius of at least 300 meters around four buildings located in the Al-Hadath, Haret Hreik, and Bourj el-Barajneh neighbourhoods. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun denounced the attacks as a "flagrant violation" of the ceasefire that ended a year of conflict last year. New MEE newsletter: Jerusalem Dispatch Sign up to get the latest insights and analysis on Israel-Palestine, alongside Turkey Unpacked and other MEE newsletters Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz said on Friday there would "be no calm in Beirut, nor order or stability in Lebanon without security for the State of Israel. "The agreements must be respected, and if you don't do what is necessary, we will continue to act, and with great force," he said. Hezbollah and Israel were engaged in cross-boundary skirmishes for nearly a year after the latter began its war on Gaza in October 2023. Can the US push Lebanon to normalise with Israel? Read More » In September 2024, Israel escalated the fight by exploding thousands of pagers used by Hezbollah members before launching a widespread bombing campaign across the country followed by a ground invasion. More than 3,900 Lebanese people were killed, including the Hezbollah's long-time leader Hassan Nasrallah. Following the establishment of a ceasefire on 27 November, Israel occupied five strategic points in the south of Lebanon. It has also carried out repeated air strikes in the south. According to the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data project (ACLED), an American NGO which tracks violence, Israel carried out at least 330 aerial attacks between 27 November and 10 January 2025. The Lebanese army said on Friday that it had begun to coordinate with the committee responsible for supervising the ceasefire - of which Paris and Washington are members - "in order to prevent aggression". But Israel "insisted on violating this agreement and refusing to cooperate with the committee," it said. "[This] only weakens the role of the committee and that of the army," it added

At least 34 dead in India's northeast after heavy floods, Asia News
BHUBANESWAR/DHAKA — At least 34 people have died in India's northeastern region after heavy floods caused landslides over the last four days, authorities and media said on Monday (June 2), and the weather department predicted more heavy rain. More than a thousand tourists trapped in the Himalayan state of Sikkim were being evacuated on Monday, a government statement said, and army rescue teams were pressed into service in Meghalaya state to rescue more than 500 people stranded in flooded areas. In neighbouring Bangladesh, at least four members of a family were killed in a landslide in the northeastern district of Sylhet, while hundreds of shelters have been opened across the hilly districts of Rangamati, Bandarban, and Khagrachhari on Sunday. Authorities have warned of further landslides and flash floods, urging residents in vulnerable areas to remain alert. India's northeast and Bangladesh are prone to torrential rains that set off deadly landslides and flash floods, affecting millions of people every year. Roads and houses in Assam's Silchar city were flooded, visuals from news agency Ani showed, and fallen trees littered the roads. "We are facing a lot of challenges. I have a child, their bed is submerged in water. What will we do in such a situation? We keep ourselves awake throughout the night," Sonu Devi, a resident of Silchar, told Ani. [[nid:718490]]
